Well I thought that I could safely offload excess baggage that was no use to me as yet but which I wanted to keep at the d'Arnise keep. I am supposed to be the ruler now. I put some really good stuff in containers in the hidden passage into the keep and in a chest in the hidden forge. Well I came much later to add more stuff to my hidden stash only to find the hammer, elven court bow, pommel jewel etc etc have all disappeared!! I have no clue which is supposed to be my bedroom so thought these hidden areas would be the safest. Where can I store stuff without it disappearing? I am going to have to go back to almost the beginning of the game to get this stuff back but where can I store it?

No idea, I always use a container outside the Copper Coronet and/or near the Adventurers Mart. I think Strongholds can change when you take them over. edit, I thought the chest at the top of the stairs was an important one for the keep but as I said I'm not certain.
As for your missing items, maybe you could consider adding them back via Shadowkeeper. Got to be easier than replaying many hours of the game. Link

De Arnise Keep and the Keep Stronghold are actually wholly different collections of areas.
AR1300: De'Arnise Keep Outdoor
AR1301: De'Arnise Cellar
AR1302: De'Arnise Keep 1st Floor
AR1303: De'Arnise Keep 2nd Floor
AR1304: De'Arnise Keep Outdoor (Stronghold)
AR1305: De'Arnise Cellar (Stronghold)
AR1306: De'Arnise Keep 1st Floor (Stronghold)
AR1307: De'Arnise Keep 2nd Floor (Stronghold)
If you offloaded the gear in the Stronghold Keep, I am not sure what has happened.
Near Infinity may show where the items are, if they are in containers.

Did you put stuff there before the keep was yours?

The question ussnorway poses is relevant, as (like Ishad Nha shows) the Keep changes once it's yours. When I read that some while ago on this forum, I used the chest in de'Arnises Keep only after it had became my Stronghold. I assume after the transition your stuff would be safe, but I'm not sure.
For recreating items (or alternatively, use a console command to move to the original Keep) this page with 'cheat codes' might come in handy: http://www.sorcerers.../BG2/cheats.php
If you can refrain yourself from really cheating, knowing how to use what's known as the CLUA Console can help repairing things that went wrong in the game.

thank you all for the response - it is possible that I put all the stuff there before the keep had been handed over - I offloaded when I entered the keep and when I got the stuff from the golums - aargh!!!!!!! I am so far along that I can't seem myself going back - I am not the most computer literate person, I might just have to replay - I am quite shocked as in BG1. I used random containers and my stuff never disappeared - why should it disappear in a friendly environment?

It is actually important to loot the stronghold before dealing with the final bad guy, Tor Gal.
The really good items that are protected by the golems disappear for instance.
I agree with your sentiments.

I have gone back to my save before the conversation with Nalia about the keep and picked up all my storage items - now the keep is mine will everything be safe? I will have a major temper tantrum if this happens again!

As far as I know, just about all containers are safe. Once you empty a container, it will stay empty. There aren't any "restocking" scripts, to the best of my knowledge, so nothing should overwrite what you put into them. The only issue is whether you can get to them again.
In your case, you put stuff into containers that ends up being in an area you can't get to. The containers in the stronghold should be quite safe, assuming you don't lose the keep again.
Only "restocking" container that I can think of is the desk thing in the upper floor library at de'Arnise. Your 500 gold are put into it every week, but I don't think that will overwrite anything. But I don't recall if I ever actually checked.

Well, I can't carry the world with me so I will just have to risk it. Thanks everyone for your help.

Also bear in mind your stronghold will be unavailable in Throne of Bhaal. Watchers Keep is a good place to store items you want to transfer but can't hold. First room on the left has several suitable containers but one or two will be trapped/locked.

Read up about the Clua Console, that can take you to anywhere, including the old areas of the Keep.
IESDP has notes on it.

I traditionally always use the table by the upper-western entrance inside the Copper Coronet (the one Korgan hangs out at, I think).

Any items that you put into the keep before it is yours are still there, but the areas are unavailable. You can use the console commands to teleport your party to those areas and pick the items back up.
I always use the merchant stands out in front of the Copper Coronet, until I get to the end of Chapter 6, where I transfer everything into a chest at the top of Watcher's Keep if I can't carry it with me. Sure you lose access to your stash until after Saradush, but better than losing it entirely.

A bit off topic, but the first time I played BG1, I carted every book I found around with me. By the time I hit the big city I could barely carry anything else, and being alarmed at the number of thieves barging into every house and cleaning them out, I needed somewhere secure to store my library. I chose downstairs at the flaming fist headquarters as pretty well guarded. One of my more brilliant decisions.

You surely helped in educating those iron-eaters!
