Hello all! I rarely venture into this part of the forums, so hopefully this thread will not be covered in an avalanche immediately.

I recently (as of today) restarted the Mass Effect trilogy, with a brand new Shepard (male). For the most part, I never really paid attention to the in game dialogue with LIs, just wanted the achievements. However, now that I don't have much else to do, I'd like to go back and get the true ME experience. I was wondering which romance option was "the best" in terms of excitement, conversation, and overall feel. I've always been attracted to Ashley, I love strongheaded women IRL, but she is extremely stale in the third installment. I've been considering Tali, but she seems... stale, and boring in all the games but the first. Liara has really piqued my interest too, but Ashley always seemed a better choice. I've heard Jack has some interesting going-ons as a LI, but she's... well... Jack. And Miranda... let's face it, she tries too hard to be perfect and it just gets annoying. Her good looks are the only reason anyone is attracted to her.

So which do you think is the best choice? Thanks for reading!

P.S. (Not really interested in a Kaiden or Cortez romance, sorry!)

Ignoring your false statement about Miranda, it's your own chosen LI, that character that you like most, who will give you the maximum excitement.

If you are asking for bland amount/quality of content, then go for Liara.

For me Ashley is the better choice, and is more suited to my soldier Shepard. She goes well together with the Shepard I have headcanoned. For him, it was either her or nobody because he isn't that type of guy to 'screw his crew'. I admit, her romance was disappointing in three. She got the short end of the stick when it came to the ME1 romances. She doesn't talk as much as should, or as much as the rest. Even Kaidan has longer cutscenes than her. The best scene with her is the romance scene itself, and even during that you don't get any extra dialogue options like Liara or Kaidan did.

Liara isn't my Shepard's type of girl, let's just say.

But if you're looking for the best experience choose Liara... obviously. She gets far more attention and loves Shepard no matter what you do anyway. She'll always show up, take the spot light, and at least talk.

If Tali didn't exist, I would have chosen Liara because she loved Shepard unconditionally and was so intrigued by him that it was just too cute.

Also, the game almost pretty much makes her the canon LI, and if you stick with her through all 3 games it will be a really rewardeding experience.

Ashley to me was cool, but a little too anti-alien and I don't really prefer tomboyish women.

I'd say go Garrus. Especially in 3, your hard work pays off! But if you're not interested in playing femShep, the Jack romance is amazingly cute. The Miranda one is touching. Liara, while not a match for Garrus in 3 as far as pacing and content, does pretty good at sheer quantity across the trilogy. The Ash romance has some amazing notes, especially across the lense of the whole trilogy. And everybody loves Tali, even if they don't admit it.

In short. All of them. Go. Do it. It's fun!

All the romance options are great. I prefer Liara and Tali myself. But Miranda and Jack are excellent as well. I actually like every romance option in the trilogy except Jacob and and ME3 Ashley (Her romance scene onward is good tho). Ash I only dislike because like you said she's stale in ME3. It's all about personal taste really. Still think Liara and Tali are the best.

I think Diana Allers is probably right up your alley, OP.

Don't even try to explain why, it's futile.

I agree completely. I also chose Liara in the first, and then Tali in the last two, but I can see how people like Jack and Miranda. But... Ashley is (in my opinion) annoying and she REALLY does not like you in the third game, especially if you cheat on her. Of course you could just kill her on Virmire or the Citadel

If you romance Ash she loves you, so how does that equal dislike exactly?

You know what? I give up with you folks. *Tips hat* Carry on.

Lol that's exactly what's happening in my next playthrough. Time to give Kaidan his time to shine in ME3

Did not know she was an LI option.

I'm really looking for one major romance option though. So once I pick her, that's it. Like if I pick Tali, I'm not romancing anyone in ME1 to avoid the whole "cheating" mess.

OP just pick what ya want. Weird question.

If you are just looking for sheer brute force content I suggest Liara.. writers have a raging hard on for Liara. Hell even if she's NOT your LI they have her crawling all over you in ME3.

LOL at the Garrus suggestion. I don't think Garrus bats for that team... just a hunch. Or... you didn't bother to read the original post at all.

I won't make a suggestion, I think it's best just to play and listen then choose for yourself. Beware though, if you talk to both Ashley and Liara, you eventually have to choose between the two.

These kinds of threads are always funny. Its nothing but people trashing the other LI's and basically saying "Pick mine! Pick mine!"

I will make sure Tali dies in my next ME2 playthrough, just for you. *kisses*

On topic: Liara is quite simply the best romance spanning the trilogy, assuming you will be playing the LotSB DLC in ME2. Noone else's romance can compare in quality or quantity. Garrus (for a femShep, of course) runs a close second.

This makes you exactly one of the people that she was talking about.

While my personal favorite and easiest recommendation is definitely Tali (LI multiple times), I've now played through all the maleShep/female LI's and each has their merits. Miranda was actually last partly because based on looks and immediate availability in-game it seemed too easy/obvious a choice, engineered (even as part of her backstory) to be attractive...but she proved to be more than she initially seemed.

If you have the choice then objectively I'd say Liara because she has the most content. Subjectively I'd still say Liara because she's my canon romance.

Nope. My Shep constantly rejects Tali and then she takes a rocket to the face. He'd romance TIM before he'd romance Tali. Or even Harbinger.

Ashley is the most consistently well-done. She is one of the best written characters, actually. Conservative, religious, strong, but with a heart of gold, really. And feisty. However, you can't romance her in ME2, and she pretty much hates you in that game. That kind of broke my heart, so I abandoned her for Tali in ME2 and 3. But if you stick to her you won't be disappointed in ME3.

Liara isn't well-done in ME1, but is excellent in ME2 and ME3. She is the only character you can romance in all three games. I think it's heavily implied she is supposed to be "The" love interest for Shepard. In ME1 she's just awkward, but later she becomes independent and just a little bit ruthless. And she cares about Shepard dearly. Oh, and she's a genius.

And Tali is just plain adorable. She's a genius too, but for the first couple games (especially the first one) is a bit naive and nervous. She's one of those characters who makes you go "Awww" 'cause she's written to be nervous and cute. And she a bit obsessed with Shepard, actually - she believes strongly in what he's doing and who he is. She looks up to him. And she can be feisty when she wants to be.

Wow, not only are you wrong, but you're actively killing your credibility at the same time.
