as a transformers fan, a few years back, idw (the company publishing transformers comics) characters got redesgined every issue. So when halo the new halos were revealed (reach and 4) i took the improvments as just another redesign. i had the same feelings with ashley's hair down. the only thing i noticed was here skin tone getting a bit pale (maybe she was getting here save perfect for me3) the face was largly the same. i didn't notice any major personality changes.
in conclusion, go and by idw's transformers.

Most of the people who hate Ash's redesign hate it because it over-sexualizes her when part of her old appeal was the fact that she was never sexualized at all. She was that very down-to-earth, gruff soldier, and suddenly became Miranda 2.0 with her ME3 redesign. At least, that's why I think people hate it.

I admit that it's pretty OOC for Ashley to wear, but I like it. Not the sexualization part, but the overall design of the outfit. I'm just angry Kaidan didn't get a unique officer uniform to wear in-game.

Ashley really doesn't seem the type to wear heels on a mission. If they really wanted to use Ashley's new look I think it should have been her off duty look.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I love Ash, and I loved the fact she didn't look that amazing in ME1. She had a style that suited her Hell, she said herself in her first romance dialogue in ME1 that she wasn't the type to wear skirts.
Don't get me wrong, the design in itself is nice, but it doesn't suit *her*.

For me a big part of the problem is that the new outfit doesn't even make sense.

She's not a Spectre the first time you see her so she should be in uniform. Alliance uniform. That outfit, whatever it is, is no uniform. What's it there for? It doesn't look like anything useful, practical or military.

It's just... silly.

To be fair, the armour set they have for her is the default in the squad selection screen. At least it is, if you have From the Ashes downloaded

It seems like too much of an attempt to turn her into Miranda 2.0. And it doesn't really suit her.

You can give Ash her armor in the field, however, her new uniform feels a bit extra. I know BW tried to upgrade Ashley to make her more attractive to the new guys - but why should one get interested in a woman that he doesn't even know, especially since ME3 doesn't give a new player a chance to get in touch with her.

It's less the new appearance I had (no longer have) issues with, but the lack of character development. If you don't know Ash from ME1, you won't learn anything about her in ME3. It's just that.

That being said, I'd like to self-advertise my VS Romance DLC Thread It actually deals with the issue new guys can't get in touch with Ashley (and Kaidan), so some new scenes dealing with character development should be added.

@ Mirandafied Ashley
Doesn't fit to her, however, her blueish dress is a tad more formal than Miranda's catsuit. However, it simply doesn't fit to a soldier and it's no official officer uniform too. So my best guess is, the S-units do have some special outfits and Ash got one.

It was one of the "how can we appeal to the new crowd? Give them Miranda 2.0!" I mean did you see the brick slabs she's smuggling when you first visit her in the hospital?

Initially people thought "she's a Spectre so she's less military" but that doesn't appear until about a quarter of the way through the plot anyway.

Therein lies my problem with her redesign.

I don't really like her new style (I think she looked much better with her hair up), but I would have been more okay with it if she hadn't been so different in ME3. Like you said,  her dialogue in ME3 is a refresher course of ME1, but treated in a way like she and Shep never talked about her family before. It sort of took away from my wish that Shep and Ash were going to behave like close friends, not just acquaintances. There is nothing new in ME3 for her. Plus, she is untalkative and seems a lot more subdued, which is disappointing because I liked that she could be a bit of a rude, playful, sincere, loudmouth in the first game. She felt a lot more real then.

I guess, more than anything, I just associate the new appearance with her disappointing character development in ME3.

I don't mind the new look, just that the character development didn't match the new look to go along with it. Thats why its disappointing. She never even explains the new her either..

In a way you got me wrong. It's not the "refresher course" - it's more the lack of certain parts of her character.

- Religiosity? Where? Does Ashley ever mention her belief at any point in ME3
In ME1, it was pretty much an important part of her character. Some guys complained, described Ash as racist bigot, but that's only because they got her wrong.
Instead of working out that trait in ME3, it got removed.

- Love for poetry? Uhhmmm ... barely. But almost not.
Remember the point where you can buy Ash a present? ME1 fans know she loves Tennyson. ME3 starters won't ever learn that and won't buy that book collection ...
Also Shepard's poem in the farewell scene with Ash in London comes out of nowhere, if you don't know Ashley loves poems.

I could go down all the issues.

Think you got me wrong - it's the LACK of "refresher course" for new guys. That "refresher course" could have been done in an interesting way so ME1!Ashley fans won't get bored. So maybe some old info mixed with new stuff - perfect.

Bioware did it quite well with Liara and Garrus. You pretty much get their essence in ME3. Ashley without ME1 feels incomplete, any attractive attributes are missing, she's reduced to her body.
Something that's horribly OOC for her.

Hey, in a way I'd have loved to see Ash wearing the bun again - and have open hair for her romance scenes ... ^^

I wanted to see her have a ponytail dammit!

Aside from that I didn't like it at first but i'm use to it now. I do still have a slight problem that half of her face is covered by her hair lol. She is still awesome tho even with the way she was treated...

I also don't mind the blue/red and white "casual" wear but I kinda miss her in the navy blue alliance fatigues heh. *goes back to playing ME1*

I actually prefer her ME 3 look.

She be more sexy now.

I was not one of those who had to go back and romance her in ME 1 when I saw her new look, however. I already had a few saves with her romanced.

Because it's not her. The outfists are over sexualized, when in ME1 (and 2) that sort of things didn't seem to bother her.

I could have looked past that, though, if they didn't add injury to insult and made her skin deep (was that on purpose, BioWare?).

I love the over sexualized part, but I agree with most that she really got dissed on the dialog tree, even when romanced.

I'm playing another Ash romance import now and I still feel like breaking my controller when I try to talk to Ash between every mission. She never lacked something to say in ME 1, or so it seemed to me.

The big issue was why they did it. It's right there in the artbook. They did this new design for sex appeal. That's why I hate it. Unlike Kaidans "new" look which was done to showcase his age and how the war has affected him, Ash's new look was there for pure sex appeal. Plus the look does not fit Ash at all. So not only was she poorly written in ME3, she had a horrible character design.

Not to mention she is so dam pale now. Just

Yup.  Its very out of character.  They tried to give her a touch of Miranda's sex appeal, but forgot that Ash is not that kind of character at all.

They wanted to show that she wasn't the grunt anymore. She was an officer. But it's purpose is to make her look sexy. They basically stated that as well, and letting her wear that outfit around the battlefield proves it.

It's ooc for Ash to be wearing it around a battlefield, end of. Especially when the character herself says that she 'wears armor into battle' yet the player is given the option to force her out of it because he/she wants her to look like a doll when fighting.

I do not approve to say the least.

Don't let the wording fool you Kaidan got buffed up for sex appeal too. He's in lgiht armor for two games, suddenly 'He's buffer and has bigger armor" despite that being counter productove for his combt class of sentinel. People are mad that Bioware was straight forward about making Ashley more feminine (despite her having a feminine side in ME1 anyway) She's been ****shamed over it evne though she's still the capable soldier she was from the first game and a spectre now. Everyone got made prettier, ehll Joker has abs despite not being physically capable of exercise, also her "paleness" is due to her serving on strships now, instead of plenet side, sos he doesn't get as much natural sunlight as she used to.

Well, at least Ash still rocks the battlefield. And I always have her in her armor, so I can live with that.
Just the bun ... I miss it ...

Because I find the need to make their major characters adhere to some stereotypical qualification for being "sexy" to be utterly God damn pathetic. And if they don't? Well, ****. Let's just give them giant racks. That's what matters, right?

It's stupid and insulting to everyone involved.

I have no problem with her 'new' looks. You can't expect people to look the same, dress the same after three years

Yeah, blowing up Ashley's rack like that was god damn pathetic. Compare her ME2 model to the one it ME3. It's sickening.

ASS > Miranda.
BOOBS > Ashley.
