I suspect this is the result of some Windows update, but wondering if anyone else has seen the same. Went back to take a new character through ME1 to ME3, and Mass Effect 1 is full of visual artefacts that it did not have last time I played. It looks like the 3D engine is showing polygons that should be ocluded, then rapidly hiding them again, and can be very distracting. I have also just had my 3rd crash since starting and have not yet left the Citadel - ME used to be far more stable than this - crashes were rare.
Running on Win7 64 bit, with an ATI 6870 video card.
Tried updating the ATI driver to see if that fixed it, but no change.
Last played ME1 3-6 months ago, so not sure when this problem started - been playing on and off since the original release, so should have noticied if this was a problem before!
I would suspect the video drivers, but don't remember applying any updates until looking for this fix.
I would suspect Microsoft sneaking an update into DirectX, but don't remember seeing it listed in any Windows updates I took recently.
ME1 suddenly very 'flickery' and crashing

Sometimes when you either update your GPU driver (and the 6870 is a newer-ish card. Surprising you didn't have problems with it before) or install newer games or other things, they mess with directX + .NET framework files by removing what is considered older unnecessary files, but they are in fact files that ME1 needs to run correctly. If that is the case, then reinstalling ME1 will force the necc. files to be reinstalled along with it.
If not, my next best bet is looking into your GPU driver and seeing when it was last updated, either thru Windows updates or manually through ATI. If it's newer than the last time you played, roll back the driver to the earlier version and see if that works - or alternately, see if there is an even newer driver than what you have right now.
I recommend researching the driver before reinstalling the game
Edit - oops, yeah I see you just updated GPU driver. I would say a full game reinstall might be whatcha wanna do. Remember to make a backup of your old saves of course
If you reinstall the game and have kept newest GPU driver (newer drivers for newer cards do not like to play nice with ME1), and it still doesn't work, try rolling back the driver. If that doesn't change anything, you may wanna try to reinstall the game yet again after you rolled back the driver. After that, I'm at a loss

I updated the driver only as a last resort, when playing around with all the graphics options in the game failed to fix anything. I have taken quite a few Windows updates recently, and figured the problem would sound familiar to someone else if they were likely to blame.
I tried switching to XP3 mode, but that seemed to want to use one of my activation licenses, which is more than I wanted to risk for a quick check for a fix.
I'll give it a week to see if anyone else has hit anything similar, then start tinkering. It is an age since I played doctor on a PC config though, so am not keen to start picking it apart myself... Thanks for the suggestions though - at least I have a good place to start.
