Ever since I saw an over the top trailer for KOTOR online my hopes for this game dwindled. It wasnt that much either way because its an MMO, which means many other gamers will be out to ruin the immersion for me and others that do care about the story and roleplaying.

This morning I have been thinking though, what if the origins idea was used for a new KOTOR game?

There are many
games with overpowered force powers, armies of sith and jedi clashing, exeptionally powerfull main characters I think that the magical part of star wars and its force users is almost destroyed. It might be interesting to return more to basics, to slowly get to learn of the force in a far more personal manner.

Before the game starts you could pick your origin of several races, each race having a different origin story, human could perhaps have two origin stories. You can create your adult appearance here as well. You dont pick a class or abilities here, only appearance.

When the game starts, a jedi knight discovers your force potential. You are a small child and at this part of the game the connection with your parents is established as well, it gives a chance to show their occupations, social status and relation with you. This could all be a cutscene but could also have a small playable part where you get to learn to walk and move around.  It ends with something happening that betrays a hint of force ability in you, and a jedi knight sees it and takes you to the academy, where he becomes a master and you his/her padawan.

The initial training during your childhood could work as a tutorial, you learn to fight with a lightsaber, you learn to understand the force and history and diplomacy could also be teached. it shouldnt feel as a tutorial but really as your training. the tutorial should be there but not overly noticable.
Here you could also get to know other jedi, and you can develop friendships and rivalries that could have their effect later in the game. You could get to choose your friends here instead of it being decided for you.  Your ability points and class (jedi guardian, sentinel or consular) would all be decided here as well, and you would get to build your own lightsaber and choose a crystal.  Slowly you would improve your bond with the force, and even the small things such as force pull or push could be quite difficult.

During the tutorial you slowly grow into an adult, and you already get to undertake some small missions with your master, at first nothing dangerous and mostly diplomatic missions. Here you already get to be introduced to some important figures to the story, the first time combat happens your master could protect you from harm. As you grow into a teen, you could get your first mission that does involve fighting where earlier missions could involve some small use of the force to help your master.

During all this you get to level up of course, but you cant level up your master, he/she levels automaticly and is of course a lot stronger than you.

You become a Jedi Knight after doing something worthy enough to be granted this rank, and your master could either be dead or take a place further in the background. You could undertake some missions alone while you have this rank, but quite fast you could become a jedi master and take on a padawan of your own out of several choices. (which could be discovered during the missions you took as a jedi knight)

The bulk of the game could focus on you and your padawan. You train him/her with the values you want to give, allowing you to have a very customizable companion which you can level up as well, and personality traits of your own could rub off on him/her.

At first the padawan is still young and takes on a more supportive role in missions like you yourself did as a child as well, and later on the padawan can join you in battle, and together you could become a very formidable team.  The AI of the padawan could be designed to act a lot like your own behaviour, copying your tactics.

The conclusion of the game could be many things, and past choices could have a large impact on it. Your own origin and choices would be important, but also the way you teached your padawan. Your padawan could fall to the darkside and turn on you, or if you fall to the dark side yourself your padawan might not follow and would rather die fighting you than be turned. But the dark side should mostly be featured as an enemy and as temptation through the game. It should focus on being a jedi and not being a sith. red lightsabers shouldnt be available to you, perhaps only at the ending when you turn. It could be taken from a dead sith then.

Next to your padawan, you could have a larger party but their roles should be far more supportive. You could have a pilot, a protocol droid, an astro droid and a scout traveling with you. They could mostly stay on the ship but when needed could accompany you on a mission.

As for combat and enemies, lightsaber encounters should be limited, theres many other ways to give you a challenge. The combat could be real time, and force powers could be used in a similar fasion as special powers in Mass Effect. You could face walkers, large shielded battle droids, small armies of troopers, sneaky bounty hunters that are difficult to find and use traps, poison and any other means to kill you.

Regarding customization, you could get to pick your robes when you become a padawan, and you can keep changing them at the academy on coruscant, during your missions you get to unlock more options but it should make sense what you unlock. When you become a jedi knight it could unlock more options, and when you become a master more options could be unlocked. Special ceremonial robes could be given to you after you defend a race from their enemies, a jedi friend you made during your childhood could also award you with a new style of robes during the game. And on some locations you could find unique lightsaber crystals to use, and different hilts could also be made. Hairstyle and tattoos could also be changed during the game, more of this could also be unlocked as rewards where it makes sense. Some playable species wont have hair though like a twi'lek for example, they could have something decorative for their head tails instead.

Regarding jedi friends and rivals, you could get to meet them on the academy occasionly and speak about your missions and theirs, and some might also be encountered during a mission. your relationship with them could affect their actions when you encounter them. They might help you, they could fall to the darkside, you could keep them from falling, etc.

The gameplay could focus on all aspects of being a jedi. Diplomacy, knowledge and lightsaber prowess should all be important. Some missions may not involve combat at all, at least not on your part. These missions could be quite short though. Through missions you could serve as a bodyguard, search a star system for someone or something, negotiate between two parties at war, fight against threats to the republic, pretty much the things we see Jedi do in the movies. It gives some room for clever references as well.
Like a meeting room being filled with smoke as you wait for the negotiations and you first think its poison, and then it turns out the species you meet with needs it to breathe and its harmless to you.

Well this is all I came up with in a bit more than two hours, if I can do that then I am sure that our good friends at Bioware (Image IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPBImage IPB) could come up with a lot more.

(or they could just read this and think about which employee each emoticon might refer to...)

While I would love to hear commentary from Bioware employees on the idea, anyones thoughts are welcome of course, this is what I figured would be something many people would enjoy, but I could of course be wrong about it.  If anyone could pull this off it would be Bioware, it would be venturing a bit away from the usual Bioware stuff, but traveling mostly just with one companion and fighting in real time would have similarities to Jade Empire. Abilities would also be all that strenghtens you, with the actual weapon and clothes not affecting your status but just being visual.

Like in Jade Empire you could invest points in aspects of your training. Aspects could be diplomacy, lightsaber defence, lightsaber offense, force push, force pull, force jump and several other force powers. Force cost, damage, duration, distance, etc could all be affected by investing points.

Too much effort into something that will never happen.

Besides the fact that SWTOR looks amazing so far. Bioware is taking its usual excellence in single players and finally moving itself to the multplayer world.

Any hopes at a single player KOTOR setting game are dead for at least another 5-10 years, especially if SWTOR is even moderately successful (If it's wiildly successful then forget it, single player KOTOR game won't happen for 10+ years).

Which is why I hate its existance so very much.

I tried to get over it.  I really did.  But the hatred festers.

Hmmm...need to go think of kittens and puppies!

I think that the future could be the opposite of what Magor suggested. If SW:TOR is successful it would encourage Bioware to do more and encourage Lucas Arts to 'let' them. More money would be the driving business Force that could encourage them. Of course, if you want to continue obsess over the negative and a possible future you 'hate' then by all means. :)

The problem is that MMO's and focus on story are things that dont mix since players cant be banned for acting stupid and disruptive.

I am guessing it will draw many players, but it wont be the public they had in mind for the game, and then they will tune it down to suit their shallow needs and it will become a world of warcraft with a star wars look.

I just dont know what to hope for, faillure or succes. The game cant possibly succeed in a way that would appeal to me, I hate world of warcraft.

So if it succeeds they might pay too much attention to this project and neglect other projects in the future in favor of this cash cow, and if it fails it will cost Bioware a lot of money but they will be cured of the MMO virus thats running rampant in recent years and can fully focus on real games again.

OK.  Can you name even one franchise where the addition of a very popular and successful MMO actually caused MORE singelplayer games to be made?  I don't know any, but I know several that resulted in the complete demise of the related singleplayer franchise, and a couple more where the singleplayer franchise got considerably less attention afterward. If Lucas Arts was interested in following up with good money based on a successful franchise, wouldn't they have done so years ago with another game like what had been so successful before?

Sorry, but although this is one of those things that might happen in theory, in practice I'd say it's extremely unlikely.

they are idiots at Lucas Arts. Instead of making a new Jedi Knight they make another the force unleashed. I believe they also pulled the plug on battlefront 3 and have wasted quite some time on lego star wars games instead of making real games. And of course about only 1 out of 10 star wars games is actually worth playing.
