And I would argue that the dark energy plotline is even worse...
The reapers ensure that the organics use ME technoloy which hastens the end oft he galaxy and thus reap the organics to prevent this...
Um, how about not giving organics any ME technology in the first place...this would encourage the races to look at OTHER avenues of reseach....
We'll never know, what the details were is pure speculation. It involed the scrapped dark energy plot, that's all we know.
Actually from what I understand they were already locked into the use of this tech.
Dark matter is the by product of the use of Mass effect fields or Mass relays. The core of every reaper is a Mass effect core, so destroying that leads essentially to the reapers not existing which they wouldn't do and destroying the Mass relays would release the energy they hold (as seen in arrival) in a fashion that would expedite the increase in dark energy.
By harvesting galactic life every 50k years they essentially put the galaxy at pause. Harvesting, shutting down the Mass relays, in 30 or 40 or 45k years the galactic comunity finds Mass relays again then they come in and harvest.
The Human reaper was supposed to become the most powerful reaper period because of the human genetic diversity that they spoke of every 10 minutes of ME2 and this Reaper was supposed to be powerful enough to take in or absorb the dark energy or whatever in the universe. That part I do find a little stupid, but no more stupid than space magic or star brat.

Hmm... Interesting, it needs work but yeah, the bad parts are no more stupid than what we got.

And remember that's the most basic foundations layed out for the script, I'm sure if they went with it they could have turned it into something great.
I don't mind the current one it's just that it isn't really any good.

http://business.fina...-all-audiences/DK: How much of the story was sketched out from the beginning and how much was written after the completion of the other games?
MW: I think people would be sort of surprised by how little we defined in the upcoming games. So in Mass Effect 1, it was really only a couple of paragraphs about what we thought Mass Effect 2 would be and even less of what we thought Mass Effect 3 would be. And it was the same thing when we where doing 2. It was really about having stakes in the ground about certain things. We knew that Mass Effect 3 would be about, the Reapers returning. We knew that it would be about the galactic conflict that would ensue from that, and we knew that it would be the end of Shepard’s story, one way or the other.
And other than those sort of key stakes, we didn’t tie ourselves into something, which is good, because it allowed us to do whatever we wanted as long as we weren’t veering away too much from [those key stakes].
And do whatever he wanted, Walters did.
Then he goes onIn three we had the lore pushing us from behind and the looming conflict pull us forward, but most of the details from Mass Effect 3 were developed post-Mass Effect 2. Like 99.5% of them. We hashed it and and figured it out.
And that’s really the only way you can do it because, going back to the concept of all the choices the player could have made in Mass Effect 1 and 2, until we can see what all of those possibilities are, there’s really no way plan out the details of the story for Mass Effect 3.
I like how he says that the only way you can do a story like this is by not planning ahead.
I think a few professional authors would beg to differ.
I've had experience writing - had a few short stories published - and editing before, and you don't always have to plan out things first. I find it very difficult due to the process I use to attempt to plot out the stories that I write, but I do maintain a general grasp of the most important aspects of the story - i.e. the conflict, the characters associated with it, the setting and themes, and the means to resolving it.
The key distinction here, I think, is that in respect to Mass Effect 3, you have an enormous amount of lore established in the games and books behind it that exists separately of the choices Shepard makes - excluding that last god-awful novel written by Dietz - and it's very important in this case, when one is composing a narrative, to make sure the developments and conflicts in essence feel organic and not imposed on the overall body of work. With ME 3, there's lot's of parts that feel that way and kind of jars the player, especially how the resolution was executed. It feels lazy and underdeveloped, although many insist that it's simply a "science fiction ending".

It's okay, it isn't real, go back to sleep. ME3 hasn't even been made yet, and it's a completely different studio to the DA2 one. Have faith.

Nov 2007 ME1
Jan 2010 ME2
buried in a trade magazine in June 2011 are rumors that Microsoft and Sony will be releasing next gen consoles in Dec 2013.
ME3 -- BW -- holy ****! how do we wrap up this series? Mac & Casey -- We know: super-weapon that kills all the reapers and does a couple other things. Yeah, some cool stuff.... like turns people into part robots, and makes Shepard into the reaper overlord and stuff like that. Throw out that dark energy stuff. Too hard to write and would take another installment. Besides it really is crap. Think about it. You're going to get to the end and people are going to be going WTF? Let's go the tried and true AI vs. humans route except on a galactic scale.
-- okay fine but how does it end? -- M&C: don't worry we'll take care of the ending. And we've got to push this thing out so we have enough time for DLC before DA3 and its DLC and the new consoles hit the market.
-- Nov 2011 -- okay we got a leak in the office, we've got to rewrite the ending. -- M&C: we'll do it. No one except a select programming team, voice actors, will see it until press time.
March 2012 the **** hits the fan.

It became enjoyable enough a product, with the desired archetypical characters, who more often than not cross far over the line from "interesting" to "charicature", but to this day the game feels kind of disconnected from the series as a whole and you could arguably skip it entirely and suffer little consequence, continuity-wise.
It does, or course, not help that each title needs to be marketable alone.

Completely unrelated, actually. Haha. I sat down, one day, and tried to think of a lasting avatar name for my XBL account.
I came up with a few, but none so lasting and pliable as WantedMan Dan. Hell, literally, I could adapt the name in so many different ways; I actually already did, once, when I was still playing Halo 3's multiplayer and got too good for my team. ShadowMan Dan was the alt name.

Fair enough. It is a great song though. And in fairness mine is a variant of a character in Simon Green's Nightside series Shotgun Susie.

No one plans every detail of a story from the beginning, if you did you would be stuck with a rigid piece of crap.
