I agree that it waters down Lugo's death but overall, i feel it waters down the consequences of Walkers actions. I personally hope he did not die at the helicopter crash. This game is really focusing on realism and for those who are non-believers in an afterlife/hell etc this kind of ruined it for me. I also still don't understand the purgatory part. Did Walker die at the beginning or at the second helicopter scene?

And after that if Walker really did die at the helicopter scene why does it not repeat from the start where they are trudging across the desert instead of carrying on after the crash? Does this cycle of Walkers suffering repeat after he commits suicide/kills his rescue/gets rescued? I wonder what happens to Adams.

Oh and who saw the creepy scene when you die and it's just he white phosphorous victims with the woman and the child in the foreground with the 'twinkle twinkle little star' theme being hummed by a woman? Pretty creepy and personally on par with a scene from any horror game. Not something you expect from a shooter.

From what I've understood Walker died at both. He's forced to relive everything up to those points again and again. I'm not sure what I think of this explanation though. I like the concept of it but I feel it nullifies what happens in the final chapters.

Yeah I don't see how the endings play into that. Maybe suicide is him finally accepting what he has done and moving on while him surviving is denial and being condemned to repeat it?

And I searched that up on youtube. Jesus. Christ. That's really messed up. It's even worse since it plays at the bit where you see the Heavy Lugo.

Another thing the purgatory theory hinges on is that Walker's hallucinations are so severe, that it allows him to imagine events well after his death. So far i'm glad that the purgatory theory is not considered canon by the writers, because this creates an open ended narrative that allows for multiple interpretations of the epilogue.

@ the bolded -That Lugo hallucination was crazy, but remember that clothing store in the mall with the flickering light, and the heavy trooper who would teleport everytime you shot him? I seriously thought i was going to have a seizure if i viewed that flashing light a second longer.

Agreed.

That was quite intense. Doesn't Walker say something along the lines of “not this again"? Makes me wonder if he was suffering from something before the events of the game like Konrad.

Purgatory? Is that the official explanation or something the fans came up with? Because I never saw it that way and wouldn't really like it.

Heart of Darkness fits my tastes better than some kind of purgatory story.

One of the writers said it in a podcast. I don't think it's canon though.

Just spotted something strange.

On the level after the you crash the water tankers and either kill Riggs or let him burn, anyway when Lugo requires help and you first enter the building, insidde there are two statues with glowing lines all over them.

Wait a second, the screen flashes and the gold cracks disappear and Walker rubs his eyes. Anyone seen this?

Never noticed it until now. It's the same level with that teleporting heavy right?

More symbolism for the white phosphorus?

Yeah it is, right near the beginning where you enter the mall.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL?

76/100 from 59 critics and 8.2 from users seems like a good score to me.

I've heard nothing but good things about the game on a few different forums from sources whose opinions I trust. Based on that I picked it up in the amazon deal this week: Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Spec Ops for 20 bucks. Haven't played it yet, but it's on my 'soon' list.

So basically, Heart of Darkness: The Video Game?

No, if it were Heart of Darkness: The Video Game, it would be a boring, but bizarrely racist, game about a boat ride in which the main character loses himself to darkness simply because the story calls for it. It would be heralded as one of the pinnacles of Western game development by people who've never played it, but have seen an excellent movie based loosely on it.

If that's the case thank you for saving me from boredom, because I was planning on purchasing the book.

I just finished this and it was pretty awesome, I actually feel really bad about a decision I made, I didn't realise there was another option.

I have a question, after looking at the achievements there's two that say something like "Live and let live" and "Live and let die" I've got neither of these despite finishing the game. Did I miss a decision somewhere?

No it's part of the endings. Fight and survive or fight then die.

Live and let live is actually the achievement "The Road Back". That one is for actually dropping your gun, when the soldier order you to do just that in the epilogue.

Live and let die is "The Road To Glory". When the soldiers order you to drop your weapon, open fire and die in the following fight.

I looked into it surprised that Yahtzee would recommend a military shooter based on story.

Powerful stuff. I loved how the split-second decisions were set up, it was something that made me act on impulse rather the objective morals.
*SPOILERS*
Like how I was opting to save the civilians before Gould?
I panicked and started shooting when they started strangling him in front of me, only to fail saving anyone.

Scrolling down avoiding the spoilers here, I just wanted to say just from what I've heard of it, it's already one of my favorite games, for just the good it could do for the games industry if more publishers weren't cowards. I am very intrigued to play it, however I am waiting for a bit just so the price goes down, and/or I forget the spoilers that my friend accidentally told me and that I read in a thread one time.

Not sure if you're on pc or console, but since it's a steamworks game and steam has it at 49.99 atm, you can get it half off at amazon for pc download at the moment. www.amazon.com/Spec-Ops-The-Line-Download/dp/B0085NTITS/ref=sr_1_1

A similar thing happened to me, I didn't panick I just walked out into the open. Enemy troops were like, "hey there he is, shoot him!" No achievement for me. :(

You don't have to die in the fight; you can win, and you still get the achievement.

I saw this game on sale 1 week from launch at $20. Going to say it bombed huge. Just like Max Payne 3 financially.

Which I'm kinda glad, personally. While I like shooters, they're horribly saturating the market right now and it appears people are getting tired of them too. Safe a few major franchises.

I'll pick this up when it's under $5 on a Steam sale. Not worth $20+ to me since I'm shooter'd out.
