Not much of a trick but finding it helpful on my second round.  First I found it well into the game.
As soon as you can possibly go, first go to Denerim... Go to the mage store and buy the belt.  It gives extra experience for codex.  Then really start the game missions.  It makes every codex that is normally 50exp... now worth 75exp.  Which adds up rather quickly especially in the early towns, mages tower, etc...
