He was for both. He wanted to server the Reapers to survive, and allow a fusion of organic and synthetic. Look up the final Saren confrontation. It's why I think Synthesis is abhorrent, not only do you force the change, but you do the Reaper's bidding.

I'm not a particle physicist so I can't say I really thought a whole lot about how eezo works. The point is that we know what it does in Mass Effect and that the characters know what it can do. It powers the relays and is somehow involved in Biotics. It's like the "spice" of Dune, except Dune gets really pseudo scientific and fuzzy with what folks can do with spice.

It's pretty fuzzy what you can do with eezo and the psychic magic in ME. Expanding it to enact Synthesis isn't much more of a leap than spice (spoilers) allowing you to live 10,000 years as a giant worm god with perfect prescient vision and the memories of all your ancestors back almost to the dawn of sentience.

What didn't occur in Mass Effect was that when faced with a problem, a character didn't just say "No worries, I'll tie some eezo to this baboon here and that blah blah etc etc".

Nope, because they had omni-gel.

Perhaps I need some examples on where eezo was given a few too many liberties. Also, I'm definately not arguing that Dune doesn't strain my suspension of disbelief. So yes, synthesis is like spice. The longer the series of Dune continued, the 'fuzzier' the use of spice became. This corresponed to a steady decline in the series popularity.

And then we have green waves of energy that are able to alter all live, synthetic, organic and even bacteria, in the entire Milky Way. Because some dude with implants jumped into a beam of light. That is what people generally call "bullsh*t" and for any work of science fiction that wants to be taken somewhat seriously this would be considered the "Jump the Shark" moment.
