It's not random that there is a British Soldier. It's random that "A random British Soldier" had a name and so much screen time at the end and in advertising despite...Being completely pointless.

And now all the DLC is done, and we know the next Mass Effect won't follow on from 3, it's been cemented that he is the most random character in video game history in my opinion.

In the Low-EMS ending, Joker doesn't come out of the Normandy on the jungle planet, correct? So he has the same level of plot armour as Liara.

The Glowjob has the greatest plot armor.  Because nobody else's plot armor kills the attacker and his or her galaxy when it is shot.  Nor deliver nearly such a pompous message of insult by the writer when it does so.

He might be one of the most random characters in Mass Effect, but video game history? I've run into much more "random" characters in Fallout 3/New Vegas than anywhere in Mass Effect. Just yesterday I had three wannabe hockey players accost me and rather aggressively demand the recipe for a new soda flavor.

maybe he went back in time to stop the reapers, hes somehow related to shepard from the future, and thats why he's there....really who knows
