Edit: I was wrong.
Anyways, as someone pointed out earlier, by Mass Effect time, culture could have changed so that it makes no difference. Gay dudes might hit on straight dudes, and nobody will bat an eye (except to identify their sexuality. Cuz Shepard will be looking at the ladies, you sissy boy). You get the same thing from the writers of Dr Who (Davies and then Moffat) where in the future people just don't care about that stuff anymore. See: Harkness, Jack.
I guess the idea is that to us it's a bit of a shock, because we're just not used to it. Or I completely misrepresented OWA's point(I did, edited), and if I did I apologize.
That's precisely what I'm getting at. We can't force our own perceptions/beliefs/moral code on characters and settings that are different from our own and ultimately not up to us to define. For all intents and purposes, ME universe is a place where homosexuality/bisexuality/pansexuality/xenosexuality is accepted, and to assume otherwise would be breaking character (ie, metagaming).
It doesn't mean you have to RP your Shepard as gay. It just means that he/she wouldn't be all too shocked/offended if a person of the same gender was hitting on them.
