I'm trying to get a list of items whose tier can be upgraded buy selling and buying back from a merchant. I know this is possible with the Warden Commander armor, but many "named" items don't seem to upgrade (such as the Helm of Honnleath or Asala).
List of items upgradeable in-shop?

If you put items in your party chest at Wardens Keep they upgrade for free.

It's random, so one time you put in the Warden Armor and the boots might be silverite, gloves red steel, etc, but just leave and come back till they are all the same. You have to be tiered high enough to get these however. So when Dragonbone is what you are finding everywhere when looting, then you will get dragonbone items in your chest. Some things don't upgrade no matter if you sell them or put them in the chest. You will need to figure that out, as I do not know which ones don't. Warden Armor definetly does.

I understand the upgrade mechanics and I'm aware of the chest trick, but it doesn't work on PC.
What I'm trying to get is a list of items that can/cannot be upgraded. I think weapons are not upgradeable, but I haven't confirmed it.
Upgradeable:
Warden Commander armor set
Non-upgradeable:
Asala
Helm of Honnleath
Blood Dragon armor set(?)
Juggernaut armor set(?)

On the PC version the party chest does not autoupgrade items for free. I've tested this under several conditions including leaving items in the chest over the course of several level advancements. Most of the items I pickup not are tier 7 but my warden armor is still steel.

I concur with tetra. The chest doesn't seem to upgrade with loads, while the WK merchant (who reloads his inventory every time you open his shop) does.

Stuff that always drops at the same tier, which is virtually all unique (named) stuff, non-upgradeable. Regular vendor trash: upgradeable.

Yeah sorry I play on xbox so I didn't know that the PC doesn't upgrade items in the party chest. That guy at WK is a better bet then the guy at camp. It is very expensive to buy it back. Make sure you got some $$$$.

as far as i know the only "unique" items that are upgradable through vendor/chest are the ones from warden's keep (x-bow, armor set, and the weapon you get at the end) , for the rest only non-unique items seemed to upgrade for me, basic armor and weapons, also the gems for shale, though those only upgraded for me at the gem vendor in Orzammar.

from what people said my guess is anything that can vary in tier can be upgraded, but jsut the tier upgrades enchants don't and the armor/fatigue rating goes up too. trying checking dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/item_sets and i think anything that's listed as "Varies" you can get upgraded

Just so I understand, on a PC you can sell to a merchant then buy back what may be an upgrade version later, at full cost? How much later? Is this just like going back to a vendor and finding that they restocked with higher level gear as you level up, except it's for specific gear you sold earlier? Price also goes up? I'm not sure I see the benefit, unless you shop a lot for gear (mainly, I loot for gear, except for the odd few items).

Those who dont have the DLC yet will be glad to know you can upgrade King Calin's armour. Its a really cool armour set already but at level 7 it just owns!

@Padaas yes you have to buy it back at full cost, it only upgrades material/damage/fatigue, not enchantments it may or may not have. and you should just have to close the trade screen and then open it up again for it to change. and you can do that over and over until you get the material/level you want.
@Captain Crash where do you get his armor? i thought it was only on the return to ostagar DLC that has been indefinitely delayed. i know you can dl a 3rd party mod to put it in your inventory, but i thought that was the only way to get it

Some peopel downloaded the DLC for the Xbox and didn't have any sort of glich with it. I suspect that they're still enjoying it, while the rest of us PC/Xbox/Playstation 3 users simmer in out juices during the wait

Bloodline is a Waraxe that drops from the Spider Queen in Ortan Thaig. I had it drop during one play thru as Tier 7 and another as Tier 5. Took it to the Smith in Redcliff village - sold the Tier 5 version and went back and forth from Camp. It upgraded to Tier 7 (damage wise and added a runeslot up to 3 total) - only cost me net about 5 gp.
Aodh and Ageless did not upgrade - gonna try the Ancient Elven Helm( which prolly wont work) for the hell of it.

Unique weapons always drop at the same tier and always stay at the same tier eg. Fade Wall, Kenning Blade.
Other than what has already been mentioned I know that selling Agesless and buying it back kind of upgrades it. It remains Silverite and keeps the same stats but 2 rune slots get added. I've done this on PS3 just by selling, closing the window and buying back.

Will any vendor upgrade? I'm currently playing a noble dwarf and since Gorim pays me so much more than Bodahn, I've been selling almost exclusively to him.

I don't have Warden's Keep, so then none of the other vendors upgrade?
Thanks.
