I can't advance in the game on easy mode. I've encountered some shades and they are utterly destroying me.   I messed up with my save games and I'm stuck at this point.   I don't have enough heal potions and these things just kill me real real bad.  I don't even come close to winning.

I've never fought a battle this hard?!

:(

**** it i'm calling support tommorow.  Such a fun ****ing game but then it becomes so hard all of a sudden.

Even as a noob I thought i would save my rock slave & incense of awareness for tough fights. BUt the worthless things don't even help in this fight. ****

Does your mage have Cone of Cold, by any chance? That can give you a REAL edge as it freezes your enemies.

Who's your party and what abilities or spells do they have? When you say you messed up your saves, you mean you're stuck in the area with no safe exit and no saves before you reached the point of no return? Even if this is true we can probably come up with a strategy that will work.

I don't have a mage in my group.

I have me alistair & my dog.

I'm a dual wield dex warrior.

God the game just got so hard all of a sudden, it's like a complete 180.

Oy. I leave this up to the combat savvy, then.

A couple of things:
1. Pause the game frequently.
2. Try focusing your attack on one target at a time.
3. If you can, have at least one of your party "flanking" the target (i.e., get him/her BEHIND the target attacking from within the gap in the circle around the enemy)
4. Use whatever crowd control spells/powers your characters have
5. Use your shield bash and similar powers to stun an attacker.
6. See if you can peal one attacker away at a time.  For example, take a cheap shot with an arrow through a door.
7. Use your traps / grenades, if you have any.
8. Use taunt with Alistair and away from your dual wield.
5. If you have mages, do they have spells that can freeze/stun/immobilize one or more of the attackers? For example, cone of code, mind blast, force field (you can force field a tough character to handle later), etc.

It might also help to know who is in your party.

I'm a real noobie and I managed to play the game, so maybe my "order" of things can help you. Otherwise, just discard :)

My action plan:

I did redcliffe first, do the castle thingie there. I used Morrigan as mage with a heal spel and Alistair (or me) as tank.

Then do the circle tower thingie.

In the meanwhile, I did some easy side quests.

Then I mostly played with Morrigan, Alistair and Wynne, I respecced Morrigan with the mod to do some real primal damage and Wynne was my healer.

I went to get Shale (even though I don't play with 'it' much)

Then I spend some time questing in Denerim, doing some quests for my party members (sten, alistair, Shale) and doing other quests.

Then I did the Dwarves quests.

Then Sacred Ashes. I tried Sacred Ashes before Denerim and the Dwarves and got eaten! So I came back later.

Now have to start the Elves yet!

I will try some other party members on my next playthrough, now that I understand everything a bit better. I'm very curious about Zevran and Sten and Shale and...hmm..maybe I need three playthroughs...

This fight is unlike anything I've ever done in the game so far.

It was while I was traveling on the road.

These shades are so tough .. Even with heal potions the fight is over real fast.  I can't even hit them. No one can.

You can try using Dog to lure the shades and then just keep RUNNING. Equip a bow on everyone else and start firing.

Uggh let me try that. I was having so much fun too, and this battle is just raping me.   Easy mode my ass.

I'm gonna call support tommorow. I need to ask bioware or whoever is in charge why the game is soo ****ing hard.

I feel cheap suggesting this but it sounds like this is your only option.

Its called kiting. Once they are on one of your characters just run round in circles while the rest of your team hits them. If they change target, repeat with the new target.

^as suggested above.

Hmm, this is a problem.

I'm going with the suggestion above, try kiting.  I hope Alistair and your character have bows?  Get the shades attacking the dog and run it around in circles with your characters shooting at the shades.

The dog's dread howl stuns, that might help you get a breather.  If they get in close Alistair might be able to stun them with a shield bash.

Alistair should be specced sword and shield, if he doesn't have his sustained defensive buff on it should be in every combat.

A full melee party with no rogue is only for those who really want a challenge.

well I was thinking about taking morrigan but i have a dog in real life and i like the dog in game.  leilana seems cool because she is all about the chantry and alistair is a grey warden. It seemed like a good group.

Alistair has his shield wall up, the dog uses both his charge and stun.   I have leilana using all her bow abilities.

Me I'm hitting the shades in the back but i keep missing. I can't hit them at all.

i just tried someone elses suggestion but it didn't work. I can't hit them.

I'm going to try kiting like someone else said... **** i'm so frustrated. I've never played a game this hard where easy mode was so hard.

A random encounter, with no mages or heals, and already on easy... I'd say gaxe should be doing anything possible to survive.

So you do have Lel?  That's good.

What are you wielding?  And if you have any really good armor can you swap that to Alistair?  Since he's sword and shield he should be drawing aggression, not you.  If he has a better weapon, steal that.  He's supposed to distract the enemy and survive their attacks, not deal lots of damage.

Guys am  I wrong on this but leilana's bow abilities seem pretty ****ing worthless. it seems like archery is a very low dps class.  she does the least damage in the group. Maybe that is why?

Yeah its sucks, this game centers around pulling, kiting and mages. People claiming the game is easy only found it so because they capitalized on those three elements.

I'm a warrior with two daggers and have dex maxxed. So far no enemy has been able to hit me but these shades are utterly destroying me. I thought i was doing good up until this fight.   I"m in reinforced leather armor.

Alistair has a full set of steel heavy chain.  He has a nice sword and the havard aegis shield.

I send in alistair first and the dog second and finally leilana, but it doesnt' matter. These shades are killing me.

God i'm so pissed off.  I have to go to work in 2 hours and  I was having so much fun.

Arrow of Slaying--can one-shot mages.  Scattershot stuns multiple enemies.  Pinning shot can stop the enemy charging your wounded mage.  These can be very useful.

If she has pinning shot you might be able to stop one of the shades in its tracks for a little.

If you are playing as a good aligned character, whatever you do, do NOT do Redcliffe before the Mage's Tower. That is the stupidest idea ever. If you are playing as a good character then you MUST do the Mage's Tower first, for reasons I won't voice.

The game isn't too hard, you were just not well prepared for that fight. That's of no use of you now, but it's true nevertheless. But remember, you're supposed to have fun. If you're only frustrated, it's not shameful to cheat. Not more than trying to get lucky with AI bugs anyway.

This is the last draw.   I 've struggled to win fights so far and I've barely beaten them. But this fight is just too ****ing hard. How did you guys overcome this?!  God .. **** i'm so pissed I need to take a walk. I was so into the story and everything and now this stupid ****ing fight.
