I'm so discouraged, I can't advance in the game on easy mode. :(

Shades use 'drain life' and have very high dex, strength and constitution. Mundane weapons don't do very much against them and chances are you are going to need a spellcaster for this fight.

Guys read this.

I googled.

Someone else had the same exact problem as me.

Nope, that is the shade trap in Brecilian Forest where 3 partymembers die instantly and you have to fight ONE shade by yourself (notice ONE shade, not 3 yellow and an orange one).

Thats so interesting b/c on my first play through 3 party members died instantly and i woke up alone.  Then when it reloaded the auto save they were alive and with my on the fight.  Every play through since my whole party is alive for that fight.  I assumed the one time everyone died but me was a bug.  Is it the other way around?  Is them being alive the bug?

Burglekut, you need to tone down the insults. Fair warning.

Read the post above yours.

I'm talking about your posts, not his. You've been doing nothing but insult the guy in this entire thread. Lay off or take a forced vacation. Savvy?

Just a quick question: Is it possible that you send me your save file? If that would work I could try the fight out myself and help you with some very accurate strategies and tips?!

My warning to Burglekut goes for the rest of you as well. If all you want to do is insult the OP, then don't bother posting.

Well can you close this thread then?  The guy's gotten advice on the first page.  All we're doing at this point is re-stating the same exact things to the guy.  It's not our fault he can't follow the advice.

There's no need to close the thread. There is a need for you and others to stop throwing insults. If you've nothing to add to help the OP, then don't post. The thread will die on its own.

However, since there are some spoilers now appearing in here, I'll move this to the Spoilers forum.

There has to be some kind of potion or something i can use that will allow me to fight the shade before he does whatever he did.  I just need my attack rating back.   I used a rock salve and incense of awareness but that didn't help. My ratings were still in the red.

Is there any items I can get that will help me kill a shade?

From what you have described its not tactics you need to change. You just screwed up and triggered something you are not ready for. Your not going to be able to beat this encounter on your current game.

That about sums it up.

Alright guys let's stop fighting. I'm just hoping someone can offer some advice to counter a shade. My problem is fighting four shades. They take down my attack rating & defense rating. Then I get owned. Is there anyway to counter this?

God mode.

Your refusal to just use god mode makes you look plenty trollish.

Edit:  Although I have confirmed that this encounter with four overpowered shades is a real random encounter.  Probably not supposed to fire on a brand new character, though.

If your party members are injured it might be affecting their stats. Use injury kits to get them back into fighting condition or go back to camp.

I remember encountering this one right after leaving Lothering on hard. I tried a few times and then decided that reloading from an earlier save was the best idea.

If you have weapon coatings, use those - acids/poisons - failing that your best bet as some have already suggested is to bite the bullet and switch someone out for Morrigan as Shades don't like cold damage, she'll also up your damage potential anyway at that level, she also has Frost Weapons which will give your entire party's melee weapons cold damage.

I appreciate you don't want to take her because she's 'evil' but isn't it worth it to be able to move on? You can take her back out in favour of someone else as soon as you get where you're going.

On the other hand, if you have run into something that's way above your party's level and even having her along won't help, then I'm afraid it's a restart.  I know that's not helpful but it will probably be your only other option.

yes also Morrigan has tons of "curse" (i forgot the correct term for this :P) spells, meaning she can weaken them for your dual wielder and Alistair to tear apart

Also, if you have any bombs/thrown weapons like Acid Flasks or others have Leliana use those, if not and your save is in camp, buy up what materials you can and have her make some, every little helps.

Gaxe, why are you still posting here?

You've been given advice on how to fight.

You've been told how to cheat your way past this.

You've been told to start again.

You've been told to give up on DA:O altogether.

You've been told not to delete your save games.

You've been told how to avoid getting into this sort of situation next time around.

You've been told you're an idiot, and a troll.

What else is there? What could you possibly be hoping to see that you haven't already seen?

On a different forum I used to be part of a group that ran 'forum bingo', where someone created a simple application that listed (in a 5x5 grid) all the typical troll/whine/justification stereotypes. It was great fun and made slow work days like this enjoyable, because the complaining was so common.

This thread is inspiring for the reason you just posted.

It is difficult without a healer in your group. However...a lot of times just reloading and redoing the fight after thinking things out statistically helps. Even going back to camp to nurse your wounds/injuries (save an injury kit here) and to make a few heal pots helps.

1. Stay back from the four shades if you can...out of melee range or even their attack range, and range fight them. Get rid of two or three of them, then go in close for the last one/two. This has save my sorry ar*e numerous times. Equip yourself and Alastair with a bow in your secondary slots and you two and Liliana go to town. Focus fire the targets so they drop faster. Hold back your group.

2. If you can't fight from range, arm yourself with some heal pots. make some if you don't have enough, and put them on all your characters hotkeys. Pause the game and use when health gets low. Keep your tanks up first and foremost. They can take the most dmg (guess that's you and Alastair?) Again, all focus on the same target. You can change your companion's tactics to do this.

3. This has been mentioned before, but those bombs come in handy. if you haven't scavenged any off corpses, you can buy them for a reasonable amount at most merchants.

4. Have your sword and board stun. If you are dual wield, you should be doing the same - I think its riposte that stuns with DW? (don't quote me on that)

You should be able to finish off four shades using those strategies.

I've found this game is not a simple run-in-and-smack-whatever-is there. I had to plan strategy on some of the more difficult encounters, and sometimes had to try more than once.

The other thing is - if you can't beat this encounter now, then go back to a prior save, level up, and try again (if it's a random encounter)

I can't advance in the game on easy mode. I've encountered some shades and they are utterly destroying me.   I messed up with my save games and I'm stuck at this point.   I don't have enough heal potions and these things just kill me real real bad.  I don't even come close to winning.

I've never fought a battle this hard?!

:(

**** it i'm calling support tommorow.  Such a fun ****ing game but then it becomes so hard all of a sudden.

Even as a noob I thought i would save my rock slave & incense of awareness for tough fights. BUt the worthless things don't even help in this fight. ****

This encounter caused me to restart my charater my first run through.  Like you, I could not do it.  I had Al, dog, and Morg with me as a dual wield rogue. I had just left lothering and was on my way to get shale.  Morg did not have cone of cold yet.  I could not beat it at the time.  The things I would try now are bombs and traps but you are not a rogue so you don't that option.

All I can suggest is focus fire on one of the regular shades and save the healing potions for yourself and dog.  Let the others die.

I thought you couldn't reload so what use is asking what items to get. If you're having this much difficulty and haven't already used everything in your inventory then you need to go and have a lie down.

I don't like to repeat myself and others but people have said pulling is a viable solution in this case so i suggest you go with it.

Otherwise another tip i have, which i don't think has been mentioned, is to check if you have any acid bombs or flasks in your inventory. Leliana is a rogue and can therefore use them. Spam throw them at the shades until they die. This has always worked for me in the past.

On a side note this thread is still alive because you people keep posting in it. You claim the op to be the stupid one yet you continue to post here. Ironic.

EDIT: Flasks/bombs have been mentioned. :pinched:

Hmm does anyone know what triggers this encounter? I have never seen shades in a random encounter in an entire playthrough (70+hours) and some other characters (40+ hours together).

Wow, this thread is epic. Read alot but I have to look out for my sanity.

To the OP: it might be in your best interest to start over. I had several false starts, including a nearly 60 hour playthrough, before making a character that finished the game. I even have a lot of experience with these types of games but there's a learning curve in DA:O and it's very possible to gimp your build. With each new character I made, I got better/the game got easier. Sometimes no amount of walkthroughs will help, you just have to learn it yourself.

I *think* I ran into it with my mage character, but if so it wasn't really a problem at that point, so not memorable.  It's definitely a real encounter.
