I'm so discouraged, I can't advance in the game on easy mode. :(

Yeah its sucks, this game centers around pulling, kiting and mages. People claiming the game is easy only found it so because they capitalized on those three elements.

Uggh so I have to play a certain way? I thought I was doing good my way.

No, you don't have to kite--the only "kiting" I do is having Lel or my mage run away from an approaching enemy until Alistair can shield bash them or Zev stun them with dirty fighting.  Pulling is always helpful, but in most fights I don't do it (although playing with my rogue, Zevran, Leliana, and Wynn I found myself pulling a gigantic train of dragonlings and cultists down a tunnel until we managed to lose some and Wynn's Earthquake came off cooldown--but considering I'd aggravated the entire group unstead of one or two I don't think that counts ).

I wouldn't call it "easy", but I'm playing on normal and it's in general survivable.

If you're finding this too aggravating maybe you should put it on hold and start a new origin so you can have some fun before going to work.

I feel cheap suggesting this but it sounds like this is your only option.

A random encounter, with no mages or heals, and already on easy... I'd say gaxe should be doing anything possible to survive.

Yeah your right and you stress in my opinion the main fault with this game. With no mages in your party and without using pulling or kiting, this game is far too hard even on easy.

Your characters should be champions of their trade and shouldn't be crippled when left without a mage.

Gaxe is struggling to hit a target and i feel his frustration. I've seen Alistair miss a frozen target 3 times in a row. I've even seen my character miss a barricade.

Uggh I know it's just a game but yea I guess I can start over again.  I may call support to see if they can help me do something.  It's like watching lord of the rings movie but then your dvd player breaks.

so stupid..

Hang in there. You can do it. I don't think calling Bioware will help, but trying the suggestions above might. Have you examined your tactics? Perhaps a tweak or two there might help, too. Move the commands around a bit. If you kite with Dog (that assumes you'll be controlling Dog), make sure both you and Alistair have a tactic that commands you to target Dog's target. And make it one of the top commands for each of you.

Good luck. I know you can do it!

I'm glad someone else out there feels my frustration.  I can't believe how many times I miss. I thought being a maxxed out dex warrior would gurantee that I hit ANYONE but that is not true.  I miss like 90% of the time against these shades and even with my super high maxxed out dex they still hit me like i'm this big easy slow target.

awwww thanks, but it's been like 45 minutes now.  I must of messed up big before all this to lose this badly.  I was so stupid to save before this fight, i guess i should spread out my save games but I've never had to do that before in any game.

I just can't get over it.  Other than the ogre fight I was doing so well, I only had to load 3-4 times in most situations but now I can't even win with loading.

If you are playing as a good aligned character, whatever you do, do NOT do Redcliffe before the Mage's Tower. That is the stupidest idea ever. If you are playing as a good character then you MUST do the Mage's Tower first, for reasons I won't voice.

No, you can do Redcliffe before without anything bad happening.  :)

Gaxe, if you have any other melee weapons, you might want to give them to Lei and control her for backstab opportunities.  She'll hit more often and do more damage that way.

Starting a new character won't nuke your current one, so you can come back to it tonight and see if the fight goes better then.

If it's still impossible if you're on PC there's always the option of turning on god mode.  :wizard:  You have to enable cheats first, though.

My, how did you work yourself into that pickle?

What level is everyone? What abilities do they have and what equipment are they using?

Have you given L stealth? Do you have any traps? Do you have an earlier save point?

The game isn't hard on Casual, so I'm 100% sure that you can beat this if you just take some time to think about the fight.

Kiting is rare. Its used in situations like your facing. I would find it hard to believe if someone told me they'd never used pulling however.

Also if you're not patched to 1.02 this might help, it fixes a bug that doesn't damage correctly for daggers (dexterity is not added in properly), increases stamina regeneration, and shortens some cooldowns. It also nerfs some spells but that won't affect you right now. Additionally, it fixes scaling for some combats, but it looks like you ran into that on this fight already.

I had similar problems on my first play and had to start a new game.

I had no mage in my group and I also put points in the wrong spells or abilities.

You could start a new game and read a few posts on how to build your characters, don’t get upset or frustrated or it will spoil the game for you.

Some fights are way overpowered unless you are prepared for them or don’t do them until ready.

My advice is start a new game because even if you get through this fight there will be others coming up and your characters were not done correctly.

Turn it off, walk away and come back to it later. This happens to me every now on then on many games. You get so frustrated that you can't do it your brain says "**** it, you won't then". Come back to it later and I bet you will breeze through it.

Once you have done it get a mage in your party and get some nice heavy armour for your PC.

I just finished lothering.  So I guess everyone is around level 6 or 7?

Alistair has full set of steel heavy chain and shield wall ability. I have him using shield bash & shield pummel (both seem to miss the shades a lot).  The dog has stun & charge and sometimes his charge works and his stun works but it seems to only delay the inevitable.

I don't use traps, they seem to complicated but the game is on easy so I didn't think I would need them.  Maybe on normal mode? Do I need to start over and use traps?

I haven't had this much trouble yet, the ogre fight took me about an hour to complete. But this encounter seems impossible.

Just in case: You don't happen to have any poisons or bombs in your inventory you could use for this fight? Also the dog has a nive area stun skill, although it is possible that high level shades won't be affected. And Leliana has a rogue skill that lowers enemy attack and defense. Use that on the shade you are trying to bring down.

And try not to have any shades attacking your characters from behind. You get a defense penalty if they do.

@Leather_Rebel: Why would you need to do mage tower first? Even if you are going for a particular outcome you will have to visit the tower directly before the final Redcliffe confrontation anyway.

I'd say that kiting and pulling are not regular parts of my tactics, but I have used both.

That's a good call.

I didn't realize that dual wield warriors used two daggers. I just assumed that that was a rogue tactic and that dual wield warriors used two swords.

You don't need a mage. What you need right now is to take a break. You are irritated and frustrated, if you go out and relax and come back to the game with a clear mind you will probably get through this encounter.

It all depends on your character's abilities. Shades are not unbeatable and there are some tactics that have been suggested already. Have them focus on one character and have your guys attack the same shade before moving to the next target when it goes down.

If you don't have many health potions that can be a problem so save them and try to have the enemies focus on different party members.

My advice though would be to take a break and give it another try when you're in a better mood. It's really hard to focus when you're irritated and judging by your posts I can tell you're not having fun anymore. Take a deep breath, turn off your computer and go out for a walk that will clear up your mind.

You say you saved just before this fight on your only save slot. I don't know what system you are playing on, but on the PC the game keeps 4 different auto-save slots (I assume it's the same for consoles). Maybe you can reload one of those?

Also, I imagine that when you were saving, you weren't in combat yet. I think (but I'm not sure) that on random encounter maps you can swap out your party. If that's true and you're willing, maybe you can swap Leiliana or the dog for Morrigan. Having a mage should make things easier.

Other than that I have no new tips.

I usually use a sword and dagger combo for my DW warrior, until they get Mastery, then I use two swords. Not sure why the two daggers here.

I haven't played a DW warrior but I'd think a dagger in the off-hand is common until you get the tier 4 skill that removes penalties for two full-size weapons.

Sounds like the OP has boosted dexterity at the expense of strength, so switching to a longsword in the main hand right now may not aid damage, and will lower attack speed.

You should always start by telling us if you play on consoles or PC.

Use real saves between dungeons and create a new one after each major step in the game. Use quicksaves while in the dungeon.  If you play on console + easy all I can say is just... /facepalm.

It just sucks that I have to load so much just to win a fight.  I don't mind loading a few times but to load over 20+ times just to win a battle on easy mode is ridiculous and unimmersive.

But i can't even win this fight. It's just so one sided.

aaaah well......  :(

I tried kiting but it seems to only delay the inevitable. I tried everyone elses tactics suggested in this thread.

But I have to admit guys i'm not much of a gamer.  Every pc game I play is on easy mode because I'm not very good at games in general (except chess does that count)? .... Uggh it's my lack of time.

But this game is very interesting I can't stop playing it because of the story. It's just the combat is too hard.

It's gotten to the point where it takes me at most 2 hours to get from Origin to Lothering, hehe.

You should register your game. For one thing, I'm really curious as to where you're encountering these shades.
