Hello!

So I wonder how you get the confrontation between Ashley and Liara in Mass Effect 1? Did it by mistake somehow the first time I played through Mass Effect. I tried to only romance Liara but got the confrontation scene with Liara & Ashley.

Is it just as simple to both try to romance Liara and Ashley, or is it something more to it? I've been flirting a little bit with Ashley, but that wont affect the future conversations with Liara right? It's Liara I'm trying to romance, but I want that confrontation scene for the lols. ;)

Flirt at both of them. They'll confront you after the third story mission. I'm doing it right now just so I can blow off Liara.

Hmm.. You sure about that? Acording to Mass Effect-wikia the relationship with Ashley or Kaidan ends when you tell Liara that you're attracted to her.

Really? Hmmmm... I've never had a problem with that, but I'll have to be careful.

There is a conversation with Liara that locks her into a romance. IIRC it is the one where you ask her about Asari reproductive practices. I don't know why that locks in a romance, as it is basically one of those 'codex entry' conversations that ME1 is so rife with. But it does.

But if you are trying to get the confrontation scene avoid exploring that dialogue option with Liara at all costs. I believe there is also a conversation with Ashley that you have to skip, or she gets locked in. Though I can't recall what that was now.

It took me some trial and error to finally get the confrontation scene on a subsequent playthrough, as if you are the type that explores every possible dialogue option with squadmates you'll never see the confrontation.

A good way to make sure that you haven't locked either one in is to always save before conversations, and take Ashley and Liara to Flux often. If you are still on track to the confrontation scene you'll be able to dance with both of them, rather than just one of them.

Dialogue also changes slightly depending on whether you are still on the romance path. When exiting one of Ashley's conversations for example, if Shepard is still on the romance path he'll say, "We'll talk later, Williams." She replies with something like, "Looking forward to it, Skipper." If she is locked out, Shepard will say, "Dismised Chief," and IIRc she just says "Skipper."

I forgot how Liara's dialogue changes.

The ME1 dialogue can be a little deceiving as an indicator of relationship status. On a playthrough where I romanced Ashley but remained neutral with Liara, Ashley still makes a comment about "Scuttlebut says you've got a thing" for T'Soni and jealously gripes about constantly chatting with your "little blue friend."

Liara also will ask you about your relationship with Ashley, regardless of status. It'll be a conversation about her misreading human emotions and if you're "in a relationship with Miss Williams" which you can say anything (confirm, deny, or tell Liara someting about "But you're an alien!") and still be in a relationship with Ash.

It happens after your second main mission after recruiting Liara, so when you sign off talking to the Council after Feros or Noveria they should pounce on you.
