So... I'm playing Baldur's Gate 1 for the first time. I did a few bad things and recruited Viconia, which brought down my reputation by 2. I got the notification that I couldn't use my paladin powers since I had a bad reputation, but I assumed that once I brought my reputation up again, I would be ok. Anyway, I recently noticed that I was a 'fallen' paladin, and got pretty worried. I rushed over to the temple and donated all of my money, bringing my reputation up to 9. I still didn't lose the fallen label.

My question is, is there any way for me to regain my paladinhood? If not, what are the implications of being a fallen paladin? Can I not gain anymore spells specific to the class? Am I basically a pure fighter now, without any of the benefits of being a pure fighter? Should I give it up and just dual class to something else (I'm only level 2)?  Help!

By the way, I dont have any saves from before I messed this up, so reloading is not an option. I'm only level 2, but I feel like I've invested enough time that I don't want to redo everything that I've already done. I guess that I'm already assuming the worst (no way to lose fallen label, no new spells), so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I almost always play a paladin and have never been so naughty as to have a bad reputation! So I have no first hand experience. However, from the original BG manual, page 75:

"If at any time the party's reputation falls below 6, the character will lose his status as a paladin; or in the case of a ranger, the loss of abilities will occur at a reputation of 4. In either case, if the reputation of the party falls below the acceptable level, that character will become a fighter. A paladin or ranger who loses that status cannot regain it"  (my emphasis)

So, I'm sorry but it looks like you're stuck as a fighter for keeps.... :-(

No way around this in BG1, and I don't think you can't dual class a fallen paladin either.

If you continued to BG2 the paladin quest would allow you to remove the fallen status but that's many hours of gameplay away.

Oh, no! Ugh, that's really annoying. I'm tempted to start a new character, but I don't really want to do everything that I've done again. I suppose I could get it done in about 1/3 of the time since I know (sort of) what I'm doing this time.

Anyway, would dual classing be a viable option? I don't know what gets lost or changed since I started out as a paladin, but here's my character stats, if it even matters: Str- 18/33 Dex- 18 Con- 18 Int- 9 Wis- 13 Char-18

Piplodocus, thanks so much for looking that up for me. Kinda makes me sad, though haha :)

Edit: Gate70, just saw your post. I can't dual class either??!!  I guess I am stuck doing everything over again...  Thanks for your help

You're very welcome.

My advice would be to start over. If you're "only" level 2, it's worth it. It may feel like you've done a lot already that you don't want to lose/redo, but if you're level 2 you've got so much more to come than there is already behind you, and if you want to experience the game fully and satisfyingly (which most people do with a game like BG, fun speedruns apart), you'll get so much more out of it by playing the bulk of the game with a character you intended to play. Fallen Paladin may present a unique and interesting line one day (as Gate70 suggests), but for your first time I'd strongly urge you to get the character you wanted.
