I just finished a hardcore play through and want to use the same infiltrator for an insanity play through now. However, the game doesn't let me change the difficulty when I load a new game with the same character? I try changing to insanity right from the beginning and again on Eden Prime but when I go back and check its back on hardcore, it keeps resetting itself to hardcore?
Is there no way to play through with the same character and change the difficulty? Do I have to create a new character and start from scratch (which might be a bit hard for insanity, not having any points and decent weapons)? Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to change it from Hardcore to Insanity as soon as you get control of your character aboard the Normandy. Just make sure you save the changes when you exit and then save your game. From what I recall (on the Xbox at least), unlike ME2 and ME3 where you can just back out of the menu and your changes will save automatically, ME1 requires that you click Save and Exit (or whatever the option is) before the changes will take effect.
Hope that helps.
