Aren't video games supposed to be a form of escapism, a way to forget your problems and not to be reminded of them?

That said, diversity isn't bad.

Oooh no, I'm on to you now. First it's "We need more people like me", and then BOOM! "We need less people who aren't like me!"

I'm watching you, you... sneaky... witch thief!

Then there are those who end run around the entire thing by not being human.  Sentient computer programs shall rule you all, meatbag.

I'm not saying that the game is to be blamed for anything, just sometimes it would be nice to not be reminded that you're broken.

I sympathize with your condition, but we never promised anyone a happily-ever-after-with-children. Considering the nature of the world and the story, I would hope that shouldn't be too surprising. If that's not the sort of entertainment you seek, that's certainly your perogative.

I feel for you, but there is bound to be people playing human noble who also lost their families. If it is to be a believable game-world, it must have believable problems.

Life sucks sometimes.

As far as anyone (including Alistair) knows, under normal circumstances two Grey Wardens cannot have children with each other. I didn't mention unknown exceptions because they're unknown -- that should just be assumed. And that's just the way it is.

Alistair: So.. strange story, tell me if you've heard this one: this fellow gets made king and then gets engaged, all on the same night.
PC: Yes, about that..
Alistair: I'm actually fine with becoming king. I've had some time to come to terms with that. I suppose there's some good I could even do.
Alistair: I suppose I'm more curious about... you know, the engagement. I like the idea, but... are you sure?
PC: Am I sure I want to marry you? Yes.
Alistair: Oh, I guess that saves me the trouble of asking. They'll expect an heir, you know. With the taint in our blood, it's hard enough for one Grey Warden to have a child on their own. For two of them..?
Alistair: Every Grey Warden I knew who had children had them before they took the Joining. Having an heir.. might not be possible.
PC: Well, it won't be for lack of trying!
Alistair: That's an excellent point. Good thing we got started when we did, hm?
Alistair: I suppose this is just something we'll have to deal with later. My coronation isn't going to happen for some time yet.. and we've still the darkspawn to fight.

Nowhere does he say, "Two Grey Wardens absolutely cannot have kids." That's all I'm saying.

And yet it is heavily implied that 2 grey wardens have never had a successful coupling together.

It is certainly not for the lack of trying!

Because he's never heard of such a thing happening.

But, fine. If you prefer, you and Alistair run off and mysteriously produce a boatload of children. He didn't think it could happen, but he didn't say never so clearly he must be wrong. Heirs galore. The end.

Better?

I wouldn't even say that's heavy implication, Alistair's how old and has known how many Grey Wardens? Heck, he didn't even know any female Wardens, what kind of basis does he have to compare to? All I got out of that conversation is, "I don't know if we'll be able to have kids," not, "We're never going to be able to have kids because of the taint."

No, I want 2.5 children and a picket fence. And the kids better be better trained than the mabari.

EDIT: seriously, Dragon Age is awesome and I love the story that came out of your head. I'm just very very sad that the only little Alistair that's going to be running around is also a demon-god-bastard.
