This whole "I demand instant gratification" thing people have nowadays is REALLY annoying for people who are used to "having to work" for stuff and "not taking rare equipment for granted".
Teenagers... *Sigh*
It's not so much instant gratification as eventual gratification.
I've still not got a quarian male engineer. Only got a vorcha sentinel in the last week or two. Basically fine with it, I'm happy with what I've got, and I've got enough diversity and a big enough share of what's available that I'm getting plenty of enjoyment out of the game and still have plenty more to strive for.
I could, however, very plausibly go months without seeing an ultra-rare character. And the idea of getting excited about a DLC, saving up credits, building up the anticipation, only to spend the next four weeks watching other people having fun with it while I keep getting Scorpion upgrades is kind of not appealing in the slightest.
You do know that the last DLC came out about 6 weeks ago right?
So is it really reasonable to think you should have everything unlocked by now?
How much do you play per day?
How many packs have you bought?
I never said I should have everything unlocked by now, I actually said I'm basically happy with where I am. I'm not complaining, I think this is about the right amount of work to put in and I've got a decent, flexible arsenal for my trouble.
No idea how many packs I've bought - but I play for a few hours most days. Haven't this week, because I've not been at home, but I've bought countless PSPs. Takes me about an hour, on Silver, to get enough credits for a PSP, so presuming I've been playing to optimum efficiency throughout, I've got 142 black and gold unlocks on my manifest, so that's at least 71 PSPs, 71 hours, so three full days, not counting Bronze matches, mission failures, disconnects, recruit packs, veteran packs, and regular spectre packs - which I was buying on Bronze at, again, about one every three matches, which I was doing in about twenty minutes, so one an hour. That's a lot of time to sink into a game. A lot more than most people I know, but a lot less than many people I've played with.
Ultra-rares I have nine of. And I've been playing since release, so that's not an appalling rate. But I can go weeks without getting one - rightly, by design. N7 weapons are lush when they arrive, but entirely unnecessary. They're bonus content. Unexpected bundles of joy. I'd never grind for them. To release, with fanfare, an exciting new DLC, hogging many megabytes of hard drive space, (and I've got less than a gigabyte left on my XBox, so I'm deleting things for each DLC) I'm going to want to have a go with the new content I've been waiting for. It's like waking up on Christmas morning and being told you can't have your presents 'til mid April. And I'd want to unlock that bonus content. It turns N7s from a nifty extra - a nice treat when they arrive - to a commodity that you're going to need to incessantly grind for.
I had to stop playing the game after Resurgence was released, because I was driving myself nuts trying to unlock the new characters. I wasn't playing for fun, I was hanging on another hour for another minuscule stab at finally being able to use the new content. And I ended up having a break after barely a week, because seven days is a long time to bludgeon your head against a brick wall to no avail. Didn't come back til the next DLC was released, at which point I was fortunate enough to unlock the Cerberus Adept in my first Spectre pack, hence reducing the risk of further headaches. If, as people are assuming, the N7 weapons will also be ultra-rare, then only 6 out of the eighteen N7 cards will be characters, so that'll be a 1/3 chance of unlocking one of the new characters just per N7 card, let alone per Spectre Pack. That's not a commitment that most people are going to be able to make.
Nobody's going to love this game 100% unfettered through every single change that's made. Some people hate the nerfs and buffs, I think they're great and look forward to each update. Some people can't stand the shield gate, I think it's a. a fair dynamic, as it (a.) works both ways and hence gives your character extra endurance on Gold, and (b.) provides a point of difference between the difficulty levels. Some people are gutted that the Infiltrator's no longer the master of all trades, I think specialisation's a great idea, and still allows them to be the most flexible class, just not all at the same time. Some people would love protheans, I think they'd remove more from the game than they add. And so I'm aware, that should the new characters prove to be N7, it'll just be my own personal bugbear. But to be phased out of my current favourite game cos I'm not loving it in the recommended way? Man, that would sting if the speculation's near the mark. I don't think I'm entitled to anything, I don't want the game to be my own personal sandbox and I like working for my rewards, but that would be a
hell of a lurch in difficulty, and only really benefit the people who are already video-game-rich. Not to my taste at all.
I don't want everything instantly - that'd be no fun at all, and I actually quite like the random unlock system. Sometimes frustrating, but it encourages you to build a full arsenal, and try out different builds and classes while you're waiting to unlock the one you really want. I'd like to think I might stand a chance of getting everything
eventually, is really what I'm saying. Under the current system, plausible, and until then I'm just enjoying the ride. If the characters become UR? Significantly less so. Difficulty's not what I object to, it's the speculated sudden spike of it.
