Yes in very odd news, the US Military is taking inspiration from Xena Warrior Princess to design a new line of female body armor. Read on.

Life imitates Video games. I can only hope that the design session for this armor went something like this. Image IPB

So... America is making body armor for female soldiers designed after this?

*sniff* I've never been so proud of my country before.

You say that like it's a bad thing. At the very least it'll increase traffic at the local recruiting offices.

Why not base themselves on Warhammer instead. Women actually wear armour in that setting.

Now anyone who has said "bikini chainmail armor" isn't realistic can suck it.

Well it does protect the most important female parts, doesn't it?

Protection? Where are you're priorities? Form before function. Every damn time.

I suspect this is more the case. That artical has no DoD opinions or information its someone sprouting off at the mouth. This Armor is being made to better inclose the female frame. (that is if its being made I've seen nothing on defense breifs or military times confirming it) The flat Kevlar with led plates arn't useable by a number of women, or at least to fit in to the regulation seam. Not that it would matter reguardless. Snipers in the Mid East have learned to place shots between the seems, underarms, throats, etc.

I question developing this Armor however. Short of a PC stand point women are not allowed into combat Units of the US armed forces. Of course women find them selfs more and more around fire fights, but this has to do with the force being smaller, and recruits hard to come by, and most importantly Ambush by hostile forces on supply and medical units behind the front.

Which in the most likely case, there isn't much good that armor will do versus an IED, 20 guys with AK's, or an RPG launcher. I'ld be willing to bet money if you dig around its a PC stunt (provided its even real) by some political fatcat who's district is heavily counting on feminist or female votes, so they can yell "LOOK WHAT I'VE DONE FOR OUR WOMEN VOTE FOR ME!".

Of course one could say it might make them feel safer, but funny enough many special forces, and airborne units refuse to wear the heavy armor, as it slows them down, and offers little protection for the weight it gives.

But still I question providing a new class of armor for a minority of the US armed service, one banned technically from combat roles on moral and physiological grounds, when we can't even provide small arms for all of our combat units, nevermind the supply units. AFV and supply drivers and crews are still even after 10 years of war picking up AK's and sticking them inside of there tanks or trucks so that they can be armed as there arn't enough M-16's and M-4's to go around.

But meh who cares about being armed, there's an ellection to be won by god!

It actully reminds me of a Governor here, she made all this nosie on needing our troops better protected (national guard) and via pork spending on a company that funded her ellection (SURPRISE!) they got body armor finally.

Substandard, that an AK can rip into no problem, heck even a pistol. Many of the Soldiers just never wore them or threw them away, deciding its better to run, than it is to keep a 30 pound sandbag that won't stop the most commonly used weapon in theater. But meh who cares it was only 300 million dollars wasted.

Civilian control is just grand.

Besides being a distraction and give the armor to the useless people who not only fail but cant actually fight.theyll be the first thing seen and the last thing alive left on the field.suicide hotline number would give great candiates to wear said armor

Right on Confess-A-Bear, women do need better body armor, but so do all of our armed forces. When I was in the service there was a warning label on the inside of our vests that stated in no uncertain terms, This vest will not stop rifle rounds. If they want women to be safer in combat, just don't send them. But then again that would be a good point for every in the military. You don't want casualities doesn't go to war, unless absoluetely necessary.. ie defense of the home land.

Hmm that is why I fear the drones rwilli80. They take what makes war a risk and throws it away. It would open an era of conflict not seen since 1939. Minus this time...well if you bomb a mans wedding, his family, and seek to subjegate him with machines...sooner or later he will reach your home.

And he will not be as kind.

But it seems this is real HOWEVER

1.

Its a design for the Furture soldiers program, which has alot of technological hurdels and budget issues. And will likely be scraped.

The women will look like this from mock ups.

Image IPB

Which imo looks more like a hooker than a soldier just in a gas mask.

The male verison is this.

Image IPB

Pilots, tank drivers, etc.

Image IPB

And civil Security.

Image IPB

Other countries had same grand ideas and designs but the difficulty is power supply, and the sheer weight of the equipement.

Some nations are taking a mixed approche

Such as France

http://www.setyoufre...=192&zc=1&q=100

And the Peoples Republic of China.

Image IPB

Russia seems to be taking a human tank design.

Image IPB

And a light Infantry, which isn't new, been doing it for years with the Regular Army and the Spetsnaz units.

Image IPB

So it might not even be made, or will end up with a uni sex design with armor worn under fatigues such as we see with Russia, France, and China.

Heres a Question,
anybody hear bout a suit developed with nanobiological quantumn lining?
it was spose to be pretty much the next step in solider infiltration(real invisible active camo)
the heat from your body would power it and turned on and off with a simple button

Yeah I've heard of it, apperantly to rumors its in limited use, but it doesn't work all that great, well lets say your more blurry than the predator, plus it lights up on IR like Christmas. And it uses its batteries rather fast. It has fuel cells I think. But they have made it to fit a body, or so says/shows a Taliban Video where they blew up an Abrams and recorded an Rapid Reaction force soldier using it. While he's motionless you don't see him all that well, but in movement, bright as day minus the outfit seems to mimic colors but not details.

So short of sneak attacks or attacking thrid world militaries (or Civilians) its pointless.

Pretty much every major nation watches US R&D and makes counters for it.

word.im sure there be something down the line or already in work to counter the counters.but if they cant adjust the enegry use/spike and actually protray "camo".then its a waste of R&D

Not really, works well for snipers, besides tricks like that only work the first time you use them. Impossible to equip a force. And to countering counters, only ECM could do it, and that would be an even bigger tip off. But it seems it was mainly made for snipers anyways. Its actully funny taken into account the above Armors, liqued armor, internet spying, plasma and Charged partical cannon research, the War of tomorrow unless it happens soon will look like some crap out of star wars.

Whats funny is when it was tried on AFV's its been proven with as tech stands now, you can be invis from IR, or vision, but not both. Which I'm thankful for. The more in danger a side is, the less likely it is to fight. These technologies are very dangerous into opening the door to world wide conflict. Nukes are all but useless now. Russia may moan, so may China, but the new SA-400-500 systems they use have an ABM ability. Its only a matter of time till one side or the  other calls the bluff of MAD.

I just hope its light! Front line soldiers have more than 100lbs of equipment strapped to their bodies, 45 of that is body armor.
