This is a team-based game.  As such, I don't believe that players should be burdening teams by playing at higher difficulties than they're personally prepared for.

When I was new to the game and playing Bronze, I skipped the initial squad challenges, because they required Gold extraction, and I knew I wasn't nearly ready for Gold.  I knew that in order to complete an extraction, a team would have to carry me, and I would be a burden to them in reaching the goal.  Yes, I missed out on the chance to acquire a couple of N7 weapons, but I honestly didn't want them if I hadn't earned them.

Fair enough, but if I'm playing with a couple of friends I have no problem carrying a fourth who needs it.  When there's only two of us and we get two randoms who aren't ready, that's when the problems begin.  Anyway, play it situationally.  If you're playing with a couple people you know can handle their own and someone jumps in who can't, help them out.  It's a game, not a major promotion at work for someone who didn't earn it.

A quick tip for those disabling/activating 4 objectives missions:

If a player is hacking one of the objectives, do NOT just stand next to him.

Go cover one of the entrances or patrol 10~20 meters away from the player. Nothing is more annoying as the guy hack the terminal to see 2 brutes or banshees show up because some pubbie decided to stand next to you and bait them there.

Just want to say thanks for all the brilliant advice on this thread, I don't think I could have done a Gold run without it. And special thanks to Bane and another player who joined when two players dropped out after three waves or so - and stayed so I could actually finish and extract! First time ever! (Not excited about this achievement at all, oh no )
