I play Mass Effect 3 on Xbox 360 and the game is incredibly dark. Too dark, infact. My HDTV is calibrated to the appropriate levels and other games look just fine. Does anyone else have this problem? Shadows are so damn black and everything seems to be overly dark for no apparent reason.

I try turning up the brightness within the game menu and it helps a little bit, but it starts to look washed out. I've done some research and have heard that it's a problem with the Xbox 360 version of ME3. Both PC and PS3 versions don't suffer from this defect. Can anyone verify this?

Sadly there is nothing you can do about this. The xbox outputs a strange gamma curve that makes everything darker. Only fix would be for Bioware to correct there code to cancel this.

To many devs ignore this now and there games end up looking like crap on the 360.

I'm on PC, so I don't know if this will help, but I fixed my too dark shadows by turning on dynamic shadows.

Edit: And by "too dark shadows", I mostly mean those on faces.

But I don't have this problem with other games.

EDIT: Actually, you may be right. Maybe I just never noticed it until now. I've been looking up comparisons between different games on Xbox 360 and PS3. They all look unnaturally dark on Xbox. I noticed it a lot on the Oblivion comparison.

Here is a perfect example of the issue I'm having: img266.imageshack.us/img266/9337/x360blackcrush.jpg

Another: www.lensoftruth.com/wp-content/gallery/h2hssc_mass_effect_3/h2h_lens_zoom_01.jpg

It just looks awful on Xbox. All the shadows are really scrwed up and all the blacks are crushed.

Another link with more detailed info: forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/general_discussion/f/135/t/283711.aspx

I guess I'm not the only one noticing this problem with the Xbox.

I don't have the option for a reference level. I'm using component cables (early adopter).

My set up:

Resolution: 720p
Widescreen
Black level: extended (only affects 480p playback)

...and that's about it. Posted Image

Not sure then mine looks fine on certain TVs. Did you try changing the brightness on the game as well as changing up the settings on the tv?

Yes. I'm using a 32" Samsung LCD (2008 model).

The thing is, I don't want to have to buy a new Xbox just for HDMI. Posted Image

You don't need to buy a new one. The hdmi reference level settings are for people who use computer moniters.

Yeah. That's what I get for being an early adopter. Lesson learned.

So, does anyone have any suggestions that might help me correct this problem? Or is it a hardware problem that can't be solved?

Nothing can be done without creating other problems. If you bump up the brightness in game it helps a little bit but it also flattens the image and creates artifacts.

If your tv has custom gray-scale and gamma settings that could help but you would need expensive meters and software to do it right.

I feel your pain. I do video and film production work and when i see stuff like this it realy drives me crazy.

Indeed. This is something BioWare should have got right the first time. I can't believe they thought other people would like playing the game this way.
