I don't think suddenly becoming gay is the issue. It can be played as a junior officer being hesitant to respond or initiate anything with a superior officer, but by ME3 Kaidan has nearly died, and become a Spectre. He's a good deal more forceful about what he wants, and I liked that.

I wish there had been the MM Shepard/Kaidan option in ME1. My Shep was interested in Kaidan from the beginning, and the rejection in ME2 stung quite a bit.
