^^ The humor followed the more serious atmosphere in DA:O. I was referring to the way DA2 breaks the fourth wall and how Hawke wants to be some sort of super-star.

I'm not whining, I'm expressing myself, and trying to explain certain things to myself in turn. :P

Breaks the fourth wall? Ermm, no. You mean it breaks the suspension of disbelief? Well even if you disagree, the graphical art design of the game, plot and the game in general coincides with it being "bloody cheery" to an extent.

Other problems lie within gameplay design choices and game engine limitations which you mentioned in your last post.

There was plenty of PC humour in DAO. Right up to the eve of the final battle, where Zathrian makes some serious comment and you can respond with something to do with the stew. I think the humour in DAO was more tastefully done, and seemed funnier as a result. When you get a few such options in a major questline, that's plenty.

But when Hawke has an option to try and play the joker in every, single conversation, that's a bit over the top in my opinion.

Oh and also, the humour in DA2 wasn't "dry British humour" as far as I'm aware, being English myself.

Hah, I still remember when my Hawke said "Auhnnn no, I hate to find things" (or something like that) and the Templar just stared at her with a priceless face and then said "What?!"

I laughed really hard during that scene.

Also, Mass Effect needs a sarcastic Shepard.

Is it just me or do medieval/fantasy games lend themselves to snarky/silly stories more than sci-fi?

There was Commander Keen, but that was practically a cartoon (side-scroller).

There was also the Space Quest series, but that's an "Adventure Game".

I'm trying to think of recent non-fantasy games that were either silly altogether (like The Bard's Tale [2004]) or optionally sarcastic (like Dragon Age: Kirkwall). I can't think of any right now. (Granted. I'm heading to be now for an early day at work tomorrow.)

I like it when Hawke investigate about Ninnette, then she goes gossiping about Ninnette have an affair with a Templar with Jenhan...then when Hawke meet the Templar she just blurt out that he is too old compared to Jenhan...it turn out to be not true

Then the Templar talk about the missing women, Varric interrupt saying he have a friend who is going missing turn out to be under the bed, drunk..then he laughed alone...everybody just blurred

I usually go:

Diplomatic - to Qunari, noble women, clergy
Sarcastic - to enemies i can easily beat, everyday women, vendors
Intimidating - to enemies I HATE, like Meredith, slavers, abusive templars, blood mages.

Edit: I go sarcastic on children too.

I for one go diplomatic all the time - as I practically hate the "sarcastic" and angwy options. Though I do feel the former would be befitting in talking with children, both of these are outright over the top in my opinion.

I don't particularly enjoy diplomatic, and I'm definitely infuriated with having only one mindless move to do (investigates followed by diplomatic - and in rare cases where there ain't a tone, mage-friendly, which I sometimes don't think befitting in actuality, so I re-load, ergo I need to save a lot), yet out of three bads, it's clearly the most fantasy-and-DragonAge-like.

The set of mindless, uninvolving moves was probably the most horrid portion of the game. And it was of all dialogue.

I fail to understand how anyone can see the sarcastic dialogue options in any way as an "innovation", or funny, for that matter.

Then again, I suppose that those who appreciate moronic "humour" - the kind you'd find on certain imageboards and forums that shall remain unnamed here - might like DAII's desperate attempts at being funny because it reminds them so much of their own; forced, unfunny in every possible way and with a complete lack of either class or subtlety.

Amazing, even when you manage to make a half decent point you still come off like an arrogant ass.

Stay golden Kaiser.

We can't all be as perfect as I am.

Not the admiral I expected to say that, though, but I guess it works.

I never intentionally go "I'm gonna be a witty hero" in my first playthroughs, it just always ends up happening that majority of the lines my cannon warden/hawke pick are the witty ones.

My favorite will always be the bee lines from MoTA.

I wish I could find a femHawke version...I think hers is better.

Innovative? No, but it was a nice option that I used often. Sarcastic Hawke can be kind of... out there on occassion to say the least. Like he or she is in their own world of inane self-amusement.

But used appropriately it can add some spice to Hawke and conversations in general.

The humor followed the more serious atmosphere in DA:O.

Often, almost meme-ish references to cheese. The majority of banter. Funny french accents. The Warden's capacity to be senseless and comical dick. Alistair's silly one-liners and even his lampshading to them. The sexual humor. Oghren's character in general.

Yeah I don't agree on that. Dragon Age was never serious fantasy on the whole. Not by a long-shot.

The warden just seemed like a bit crazy sometimes when he did his funny lines but you have to be crazy to be a successful warden in my opinion. Image IPB

As for Sarcastic Hawke, I usually refer to him as the **** of Thedas, trolling everyone and being a jerk to everyone for his own amusement.  Though, I also think it's a defensive mechanism for him as well when it comes to more serious things as well.

It's funny how some people seem to think that there's something that objectively makes things amusing. Humour is subjective. There's a lot of things people find funny that leave me cold and I'm often easily amused. Snarky Hawke, I admit, is funny to me. So were a lot of things the Warden could say, or Morrigan's snarkiness, Anders, Oghren, etc. On the other hand, almost all those snarky/silly things Alistair says that people like so much leave me apathetic at best and annoy me at worst.

I don't think it was out of place in dragon Age -- being a serious setting does not mean that every character is serious. Maybe sarcastic Hawke is just an arse. Maybe it's a coping mechanism. Maybe he simply has a bad sense of humour. Having the option to play a character like that is, imo, a great thing -- I would *love* if I could make my warden more snarky. I've started a new file in Awakening last Sunday and I went in intending to be snarky -- and I didn't nearly get to be as much of a sarcastic dick as I wanted to be.

I also don't see what's such a problem with Hawke being sarcastic when it's inappropriate; there are other options to choose from if you don't want to crack jokes about murdered women, that doesn't mean that others can't play a Hawke that's a giant douchebag that'd do just that, no matter how inappropriate.

Really, my main problems with the dialogue wheel are that there aren't enough options and that the paraphrasing is abysmal. And I love Da:O's system.

What might be considered innovative is how responses, auto dialogue, attitude etc shift with your choice of diplomatic, witty, and harsh. Didn't realize myself till i did year one as all three, even how you flirt changes
