"Boasting a cartoon aesthetic, having you control the "Avatar" and mentioning "Lady British", it's at least closer to the source material than the ill-advised Lord of Ultima. Whether or not EA's claim that "the first great Western RPG has been lovingly restored in Ultima Forever" rings true or not, we'll have to actually play it to find out."

Ultima forever... İ have mixed feelings about that. I love Ultima series, even 8th and 9th games. But a free-to-play RPG?? Sounds a bit onlineish(word...) to me. Nothing is sacred anymore :/
I just hope they dont modernize it too much... Im even OK for Ultima 7 remake with Flash.

Lol at Lady British also!

I'll give it a try just because its Ultima but don't tell me this is the reason EA said no to Beamdog.

Not sure how to respond to it. I'm hardly a connoisseur on the Ultima series; It's probably a case where I'll keep my eye on it, but likely won't be playing the game itself. I love the style of the map. Reminds me of the Packed-In physical map with Skyrim, or Arcanum's In-Game World Map.

Lol Crusty, you kill me.

That being said... I don't know how I feel about an Ultimate reboot, nor do I like the concept of being one of thousands of Avatars roaming the online world.

More of this has me leery than hopeful, tbh.

Well, I gave up on Ultima back with Ultima 9, but I'm speculating the reason why they're going with "Lady British" is because Richard Garriott retained the right of the use of Lord British.

An Ultima game made under the Bioware label... I can't see the Kodex taking this well.

I can't wait for the Spoony review. I'm already curious if he will tweet about it today. (Edit: He already did.)

Yep this. And honestly, Bioware can't do anything to Ultima that it didn't already do to itself. There's nothing left to ruin.

Another article here sporting such gems as

"It's like when someone tells you to read Chaucer," Barnett commented.
"I know it's supposed to be brilliant, but it's incomprehensible!"
Shifting from literature to film, he compared it to Battleship Potemkin, a 1925 Soviet film that pioneered many techniques that nearly all movies have used since. "I mean, I'm aware that Battleship Potemkin
defined modern cinema, but it's not a great view. You watch it and go,
'it's black and white and a bit crap, I'd rather watch something else.

and

According to Barnett, "It plays fast, it's clicky, but the combat's fluid and fun rather than tactical and mind-numbing.

I'm kind of sick to my stomach reading that article, especially given the guy who gave those quotes is a creative director, and not just some marketing shill.

When the game is described as a "reboot" of Ultima IV...yes there is.

Lady British I guess is okay. Richard Garriott (the original Lord British) took his wife's name when he married (and is now Richard Garriott de Cayeux).

Richard was hoping to get the Ultima name from EA for a new social MMO thingy he's working on that they tentatively (code)named Ultimate MMO.

Interesting how EA's announced this after RGdC announced his a while back. If UF is ready for beta, EA might have been planning this for a while, but given their trend for extremely tight schedules, the development might have begun the day of the announcement form RGdC.

We'll see how this Ultima Forever works out. I signed up. Apparently, some people are already playing according to a couple of retweets.

EDIT: Looking over Play4Free's repertoire, I cannot say that I am, yet, impressed. (After all, P4F is also who published "the ill-advised Lord of Ultima" browser game.) Sometimes, I feel that EA is just being mean to RGdC for spiteful reasons.

This is the BiowEAr of TOR, DA2 and ME3 we're talking about.  Give them a chance.

And, oh, yeah:  HEY GUYS ULTIMA IS A TOTALLY OLD-SCHOOL RPG IF YOU ARE COOL YOU LIKE OLD SCHOOL RPGS.

...and then Bioware releases a dumbed-down browser/ipad turd.

Chapter 11 already, thanks.
