"The King is the Queen and the Queen is a spy!" -Chuckles from Ultima ][ (or was it III?) That was so very long ago.

U4 wasn't exactly the greatest. Quite "preachy" and railroaded the player into specific "moral" values. The content was lacking beyond that.wolfsite wrote...

Later Ultimas went back to allow leniency for "necessary" acts versus tight restriction to "virtuous" acts.

Richard was hoping to get the Ultima name from EA for a new social MMO thingy he's working on that they tentatively (code)named Ultimate MMO.
Interesting how EA's announced this after RGdC announced his a while back. If UF is ready for beta, EA might have been planning this for a while, but given their trend for extremely tight schedules, the development might have begun the day of the announcement form RGdC.
No, the first idea that this was happening came with the "EA louse" blog back in 2010. There was a picture of Paul Barnett pitching the game, with copy of the map behind him back in March 2011. This has been an open secret in some areas of the net.

Will Bioware do a good job? Probably. Recent missteps aside, they do have a sterling record for RPGs.
Let's just hope they don't mess up the ending on this one.

Those "recent missteps" is actually the direction they want to go in. They seem to be against making RPGs like the ones that earned them their sterling record.
As for Ultima, I'll have to wait and see. I'm hoping that it doesn't turn into a dating sim lite with a dialogue wheel and a voiced PC that the player has little control of, which is what BW seems to be churning out these days.
Maybe they should just let Obsidian do it.

The thing about Ultima is that "Lord British" maintained a fair amount of control on the series until U8 (which was completely developed under EA). His dissertation on "Ethical Hedonism" seemed to be a core component of U4-U7 (and they even included portions of it in some of those games as readable books). One might say that RGdC was the "soul" of Ultima, even when he wasn't the writer (again, until U8 -- even U7p2 showed some signs of deviation from the story style).horacethegrey wrote...
My brother played the first Ultima, but I've never had the pleasure to experience this classic gmae series.

If this UF thing is indeed a prequel (and I'm evidently missing that info somewhere as I cannot find it), then, it takes place before the character "Lord British" entered Britannia. Unfortunately, that is already a misstep as the various kingdoms of Sosaria preceded the repeated cataclysms that eventually settled into Britannia under a single rule of Lord British (and that's discounting the multi-dimensional/multi-temporal events in the first 3 Ultima games).
EDIT: Also, Lord British was given the name after he entered Britannia. Lady British would not exist before that.
This does not bode well if the developers are taking such grand liberties with basic lore -- again, only if it's a prequel.

And given the negative reaction to that direction, maybe they'll rethink their position and come up with a strategy that won't alienate their longtime fans. Have some faith dude. I know some people think Bioware may go the way of Westwood after their aquisition by EA, but I think they're smart enough to learn from their mistakes.wsandista wrote...

What? Is it really so naive to think that after their recent PR disasters that they've been humbled somewhat? Do you really think they can afford another ME3 debacle?android654 wrote...

ME3 is only one thing. you're forgetting DA2 and SWTOR. They're practically done as is. Now making another mmorpg seems like they haven't learned a thing from the fan reactions to their work. Bioware's practically done for at this point, and they've shown no signs of trying to make anything of quality as of yet. So your optimism is quite premature.

And I think you're being needlessly pessimistic. I've not ignored the failures of DA2 and SWTOR at all, but I don't think these recent string of duds is enough to bury them just yet. Right now they're at their lowest point, and if they're smart they'll stick to their strengths as a developer and slowly make their way back on top.android654 wrote...

EA's reaction in the past has seemed to be to ignore fan reactions and continue to go in a direction that fans did not like.horacethegrey wrote...

And what have they done or said to generate any kind of confidence that they're trying to make story drvien RPGs? Not a thing. In fact everything they've said and done since DA2 was in favor of their last three games. Seeing how this is another mmorpg after the failure of their last one shows they're not listening to fan reaction. Hell, they're not even bothering to even slightly appease fans with story DLC for ME3 after seeing how fans reacted to DA2 story DLC.
Face it, they're a crap developer at this point with no signs of changing.

Firstly I am a fan as equal as any other and they are making games I might still enjoy. I am looking forward to DA3 and while ME3 was not an amazing game (imho), it was a good game. Secondly and simply no, they are not a crap developer and they do listen even if sometimes they do not agree.

So that's 3 bad games, and bad DLC to go with it, and a new game that follows the formula of their last game. Despite the fact that a lot of their fans don't want that.
But they listen and respond to their fans.
