I accidently take the wrong companions on my adventures and I get dissaproval galore! I want my companions to all love me, which I guess takes quite a bit of meta-gaming so I can take companions that approve of what I am doing at each turn. I am trying to do that, but I keep forgetting who hates what and taking the wrong people and my Hawke is sad. Varric is the only one that I haven't got disapproval with yet. I am trying to be a really nice and helpful person and am always willing to lend a hand...maybe even if what the person wants is a bit shady (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone) and I support the mages, but I don't hate templars and I help them too when they need it. To me, that sounds like an awesome person, but it seems like I am always stepping on some companions' toes with every decision I make! I just want to be nice and helpful and loved by my companions. ^^

I sympathize.
For the DA2 friendship and rivalry you should not really think of it in terms of like and dislike, more like agree and disagree. You can disagree with someone's beliefs and still like or respect them.
A few things to consider regarding this aspect of the game:
* You do want to aim for either full friendship OR rivalry for any given companion. This opens up more of their personal quests in each act. Constantly fluctuating to such a degree as to stay in the middle of the bar is bad in the long run.
* You seem to have figured this out already, but just to clarify: the main issue of the game is the mage/templar conflict. Several followers (Anders, Merrill, Fenris, Sebastian) have pretty strong opinions on these issues. Dialogue options regarding these are the primary source of F/R points for these followers.
* While it does seem logical that you might win approval or friendship by just being supportive of them personally (ie helping with their problems and being nice to them) even if you disagree with them on mages/templars, you can't think of it that way. Those beliefs override everything else as far as this game's F/R system works. There have been discussions in other threads about other scales the followers can use, whether the devs should add additional meters or bars and so forth for future games to combat this one-dimensional problem, but for now we just have to deal with it, unfortunately.
* You get different dialogue scenes based on F/R status, which can make for some very interesting and dynamic relationships. A friendship Anders is very different from a rivalry Anders.
If this is your first play, I suggest you just go through the game as normal and enjoy the story and not worry about any of this stuff. If you like it enough to play again you can meta-game and use the DAwiki as you play, looking at each quest/conversation to choose your desired path. You may also switch out companions as needed to game the questing system to your advantage.
Finally, remember that rivalry is not bad. It doesn't mean that they don't like you, or won't support you when you need it, only that you have "agreed to disagree" on certain issues. Don't be afraid to get those red numbers!

Additionally, once you have a full bar (in either direction) it will no longer change.nightscrawl wrote...

Thank you for the replies!
I actually have played Dragon Age II before (I really like it), but it's been a long time and I had forgotten some of the things that get dissaproval from certain companions. (And yes I do meta-game that.) It's not only the mage-templar conflict, but say Isabela dissaproves if you help people without asking for pay and Aveline dissaproves if you do unlawful stuff...things like that. The thing is, I have to usually metagame the approval points because otherwise I tend to get enough approval points elsewhere that I will stay in the dreaded middle. If I remember correctly though I think I did get everyone to friendship by somewhere in the second act by metagaming the last time I played. Is that a good time to aim for, or should I try to max out their relationship even sooner? The first post is really more of a frustration release than anything because I brought the wrong people like three times in a row when I was sure I was bringing the right ones! I guess it is time to look it up again! ^^

I tried to friend everyone in my first playthrough (thought rivalry was bad like the disapprove in Origins) but ended up with Fenris in the middle, the awkward bugger.
Now I let Hawke's personality decide who she'll be friends/rivals with. My current Hawke, a sarcastic blood mage with a love for coin is friends with Merrill, Isabela, Varric and rivals with Anders, Aveline, Fenris, Sebastian. Although I've not taken Fenris or Sebastian out much so I've not filled their rivalry. I do metagame a bit, as in I'll take out a specific companion if I know the quest will particularly ****** them off. But I wouldn't let Hawke say something out of character just to gain friendship or rivalry points.

When I do my serious metagaming in DA2 I'm able to get most of them maxed out to my desired F/R status around the beginning of the second Act. Fenris is especially malleable in that I can have him at full friendship or rivalry by the end of Act 1. The main reason I do this is only to get it out of the way and not have to worry about who I bring on what quest, or in fact anything that I say to them for the rest of the whole game -- I've said this in so many different threads that I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware removed the max and lock feature on whatever approval system they come up with for DA3... >.>.dream_operator23 wrote...

Also, don't forget that if you are lagging behind on any followers, you can always bring them into the fade in Act 2. Your response during their betrayal and during their follow-up quest is a huge amount of points.

It's difficult for the first playthrough, but once you learn about the characters it's actually fairly easy. With Fenris always say something against demons, side with templars, stand up to slavers etc. When you get his friendship maxed swap him out.
Then I have Isabella, Anders, and Merril in my party. Since they all are for freedom and against oppression if you side with mages you can get friendship points pretty quickly.
Then swap in Aveline and all you have to do is be kind a and law abiding and you can gain friendship with her insanely quickly.
Varric i never really use in my party and by the end of the game he almost always has max friendship or close to it.
Hope that helps a bit.

There's also a mod out there that allows you to switch party members on the fly. Can't remember what the mod is called, but it essentially adds an ability that you can drag and drop from your abilities to your quickbar, that brings up the party selection screen.
That should help, if, half way through a quest, you remember that you are about to encounter a decision point where one of the companions you have with you will massively disaprove if you do what you intend to do.
Look for it at dragonagenexus. The same mod also adds the "channel bodhan" ability, that'll allow you to sell the junk you have anywhere and at any time by clicking on the icon. Few other such convenience abilities too.
