Biotic explosion-charging Vanguard?

I've read a fair bit of ME3 advice that says that the most powerful Vanguard Shepard team is Liara and Javik/Kaidan. Liara sets up Singularities, Javik/Kaidan set up Dark Channel/Area Reave and Shepard just charges into everyone and triggers biotic explosions left, right and center. This makes a lot of sense.

However.

When I played the multiplayer demo as a vanguard back in the day I remember being a one-man (although technically my character was a woman) wrecking ball. With the 3 second cooldown on Charge I just charged, punched and shotgunned my way through groups of enemies by myself and had a real blast doing so. So is this advice being given out so much because A ) it is just very tactically sound, B ) SP is a lot tougher than MP so you greatly benefit from the extra boost of biotic explosions, or C ) the advice is more for playing on insanity, where you need the extra boost and a more sensible strategy.

I'm only planning on playing in normal mode and am just after that visceral vanguard madness fun, and I don't want to have to stress about trying to manage biotic combo setups with my squad if I don't have to, as this would either mean using the power wheel to freeze the game or playing much more defensively to buy time to set up squad powers. And if I can just get away with wrecking-balling all the normal enemies by myself then I can optimise my squadmates to be most effective against the big bosses, since you have to be a lot more restrained in charging them with either strategy.

So biotic explosion-charging enemies in normal mode - worth the setup effort and cost?

Don't worry about explosions on normal. Hell, don't even bring your gun with you, you'll be charging **** out of things and a gun is only going to get in your way. Equip your squad with some piercing ammo for bosses, have someone who can cast overload every now and then and enjoy your charge-fest.

Actually, it's the other way around, MP is a lot harder than SP.

To answer your question, no, setting up biotic explosion is not necessary for a Vanguard on normal. Even on Insanity, you can still be a one-man wrecking ball. Here's a guide Kronner made for Vanguards fitting your style of play.

Or:

Take Reave as your bonus power, specc it for AoE and damage reduction and enjoy your very own bluesplosions WITH the added effect of being even more harder to kill.

But then once you've fired off your Reave you have to wait around for the cooldown to wear off until you can Charge. That approach kind of kills the whole "charge first" strategy...

That's not that much of a problem. Reave has a quick cooldown if you go for +200% cooldown bonus and if you go with Rosenkov Materials armor for even more recharge speed, you can send it off every two or so seconds. And the added survivability is a huge asset, especially if you want to use Nova.

With Area Reave, you can set of multiple bluesplosions in a single attack run. Reave -> Single target Biotic Charge -> bluesplosion -> Nova -> bluesplosion. Nothing in SP will survive that short of the toughest enemies.

I want a vanguard that has a biotic primer (a primer that works on enemies with protections) for multiplayer.

Biotically prime an enemy then CHARRRRRGGE!!!

I hear the Cerberus Vanguard has a biotic primer. I still haven't unlocked it.

You don't have to take an all biotic squad, it is probably the most powerful way to play the game though.

FYI to others that were wondering the same thing I was - if you're playing on Normal mode then you really don't need to bother with Fortification. Once you've maxed your Fitness and Charge (to completely replenish your shields) you're practically unstoppable.

I took Energy Drain as my bonus power instead to remove the only weak element of the vanguards game (incendiary ammo + shotgun + charging is enough to deal with armoured opponents) and to keep at least a slight bit of tension in combat. I don't think a fortified vanguard would ever take ANY health damage in the game on normal mode!

After playing a lot of MP, I realized that there was an easier way to setup a chain of BEs for the Shepard Vanguard. Instead of shockwave, my default combo was pull+biotic charge+nova. Pull+biotic charge already creates BEs, adding nova will just kill the survivors. I got dark channel as the extra power, for larger enemies such as brutes and banshees. Makes insanity mode seem like normal.

It was a huge plus to bring Javik and Liara along for the ride, but I found my own combo could do the job twice over. Heck, there were several levels when my squad mates barely shot any enemies because you can practically chain BEs.

I played a vanguard on insanity SP, I never did a biotic explosion, only biotic charge, grenades and shotgun. It was easy.
My bonus power was defense drone, but it was not very effective, unable to follow my path of destruction :D

Do you guys think Reave or Dark Channel would be a better bonus power. Seems like you could set off a dark channel and everything would be dead before it even runs out. I definetly want to run something to set up my own combos so that I can keep at least one non-biotic in the group.

I still think that Liara with a maxed out Warp is beastly. It can't setup as many bombs all at once but with the added explosion dmg and the fact that it works on EVERYTHING, its pretty sick.

I say Reave, or Area Reave to be exact. It has a 3 meter radius, so you can hit multiple enemies with one cast. Reave also detonates other biotic powers, which DC doesn't. So you can pull and detonate with Reave. Reave has gives you a damage reduction.
