So I was recently reading through Dragon Age: Asunder and happened to notice something that caught my attention a bit. When Wynne meets up with Shale in the castle with Pharamound, who Wynne claims may know of a way to either reverse tranquility or knows of a flaw in it (posession in this case), she also mentions that she believes he can reverse Shale's golem condition turning her back into a Dwarf.

I found this to be interesting because obviously Wynne believes that there are some parallels between Golems and Tranquil.

With that said, I did some reading on the creation process of golems and the rite of tranquility and I noticed that they both have one thing in common, they both use forms of control and more importantly they both are a product of exposure to lyrium.

This got me to thinking about Sandal and his strange condition. I always kinda felt like Sandal had some similarities with Tranquil, but it doesn't seem possible considering Dwarves could never be mages and Tranquil need to be a mage first. So, this all got me to thinking that what if Sandal was either a candidate to be turned into a golem and failed, or he was once a golem and has been reversed back to his dwarven form.

The reasons that I feel this are plausible:

- He was found in the Deep Roads, and we know thats where Golems were made.
- He is said to be "Lyrium addled" which would seem to be a direct consequence of the process of golem making.
- He is similar to a tranquil in many ways, and Tranquils themselves have some similarities to golems as well as the process in which they are both made.

With that said, I don't think there is enough information about golems and their reversing to make that conclusion just yet, but I do feel like Asunder gives us a little bit of insight into the fact that the two might be very related considering Wynne's feelings that Pharamound a reversed tranquil, may know how to reverse Shales condition.

What do you think? Could Sandal have once been a golem? or perhaps a failed golem experiment?

Sandal's the bastard son of an Aeducan and either a Human/Elven woman, thereby making him a Mage -- due to his "Not Enchantment!" line about the frozen ogre.

My theory is that the result of too much lyrium exposure to a dwarf would be turning into a Profane.

Seriously though, I think TEWR's explanation sounds most logical. That or Sandal's a blood mage.

Sandal is a reverse-Samson.

Since he has no beard or body hair, his magical power is great.

Varric had the chance to also be this... but his chest hair negated that.

It's probably true, given that Carta Dwarves in Legacy talk about Sandal if done in Act II, remarking that he looks exactly like said bastard son.

Makes sense really, looking at his hair color.

Doesn't the golem process involve molten lyrium and screaming death? I find it hard to believe there would be a process to reverse that, which doesn't involve finding them a new body altogether.

Unless the molten lyrium preserves the body. Remember how those pirates were cursed by a blood mage's spell and encased in stone, but could be brought back if the spell's cure was realized?

From Caridin's Journal:

No one hears the screams as I pour molten lyrium through the eyeholes, the mouth, every joint and ****** in the armor. They silence quickly, but the smell lingers, just a trace of blood in the greater stench of hot metal.

That mention of a "trace of blood" implies that the dwarf encased in the armor is literally melted.

I think that's straight-up Medusa-style petrification, though. The creation of golems is different in that a person's soul is being bonded to a construct.

You ever read Master Wade's note about making golem shell armor? He mentions that he needs a lyrium potion to "wash" any lingering traces of the golem's soul out of its skin.

If that is the case, then I wonder why Wynne and Shale would want to reverse her back to a Dwarf. Something doesn't add up.

True.

Ah that's right. I forgot about that.

Funny how lyrium causes the soul to be bonded to it as well as causes the soul to be removed from it.

I presume that's because the golem "died."

But yeah, lyrium. Magic rock of a thousand uses. The only fictional element that's more versatile is kryptonite.

What if there is a piece of the body or soul stored elsewhere, a small fragment, let's just say. With the right capsule (amulet), the right conditions (a place of power), and the right original entity (old hags...mysterious young enchanting dwarves, etc), who's to say what sort of transference could occur. Are we certain that the entire soul is bonded?

I think there's some merit to the OP's theory. There's nothing to say, thus far, that it couldn't happen.

Why would you remove the dwarven people's greatest chance at survival? ;P

I was thinking more along the lines of reversing the condition of the body still inside the golem though, not transference. But I don't discount the possibility of transference. I suppose I wouldn't discount the possibility of reversal either, if stone to flesh-type spells exist. But that would imply molten lyrium doesn't work like we would expect from other molten rock in terms of... well.. being hot, or it would imply that all the spell needs is a soul and a hunk of rock that used to contain a body to reform the body (so it wouldn't need the body "intact," roughly speaking, as might be the case with a petrification spell, even if the body is still "there").

Why not just work on making golem bodies which are able to blend in with humans, dwarves, etc?

Human Cyclons. I went there.

Now I'm going to spend the evening thinking of who the twelve models are.

Well played. Well played indeed.

Flemeth might not be "alive". I'm starting to think that she's a spirit similar to the Lady of the Forest (the Spirit of Thedas maybe?).  Shale used to be a dwarf with a body. Slight difference in "power" scale here, although, Shale's soul could technically be bound to something else...like a corpse? a pile of rocks? a pair of shoes?
