It's as much about attitude as anything else.

When you isolate yourself from your neighbors, you create (or at least contribute to) a climate of hostility and suspicion.

While the specific incident that sparked the war with Orlais may or may not have been the Dalish's fault (though it seems to have been), they were predominantly to blame for the overall climate that lead to hostilities.

It takes two to fight. The elves have a hostile attitude, but there wouldn't even be a conflict if Orlais didn't involve themselves either. The elves may have provoked initial border hostilities, but Orlesians can choose how they'll respond to a nation closing its borders and saying 'buzz off.'

Agreed which is why in my post I mentioned that Orlais wasn't without blame, but neither were the Elves. The Dalish and many posters here like to believe that the elves were blameless victims and that's simply not the case.

And some get so caught up in their arguments that sometimes may forget to see that the side they support isn't without flaws. I've been guilty of this in the past, when my passion is ignited and I'm caught in the debaters fire that I don't take the time to think about everything I'm saying. Usually led to me being proven wrong or looking stupid.

Several things wrong with this argument. First of all we do not know that the Dales was a Magocratic Nation. It seems reasonable to think that mages had an important voice, but the only verified magocracy in Thedas is Tevinter (and well technically Arlathan but only because all elves were mages then).

To give this thread a bump, I recall it being stated in DAO somewhere -- or outside of the game on the forums -- that the rulers of the Dales were Mages and that the Keepers of the clans are descended from that lineage -- though they don't hold total power within a clan.

I remember reading that as well. The Keeper is meant to guide the clan as the Keeper is the most knowledgeable on the old ways. But isn't a dictator.

I assume the case with Zathrian was different because they were in a state of emergency when dealing with the werewolves...and all the elves respected him.

Gonna bump this again. Thinking in the next few days in my free time when I'm not writing -- though it's been a week since I last touched my story, truth be told. Gotta get back into it soon -- I'll replay DAO and do my best to record all pertinent information to the Elves.

Awesome. Going to play as a Dalish, a City elf, or an elf mage?

Maybe a Dalish. Or for the first time a Surana Warden.

Well good luck.

I just beat origins again as another dwarven noble (my favorite origin :)) so I'm pretty fresh on some codex entries and lore, but I honestly didn't pay much attention to it. I was more interested in paying more attention to comparing chantry/mage codex entries and compare/contrasting them to people's attitudes to gain further insight for our fun debates here.

First point of discussion: the nature of City Elves in relation to Elven history, their current situation, and whatnot.

So if we were to take the discussion Eadric and a Surana Warden have as indicative of the opinions of City Elves everywhere, then we can say that they certainly appreciate the Circle system up to the point that they have an access to a wide range of books that might help them learn something about their lost culture. Indeed, I'd argue that all City Elves would like to know more about it, even if some choose to just ignore it.

And ****** on the Vhenadahl. Growing a tree in the Alienage to represent your lost culture, only to ****** on it. Ah Zevran, you are a clever soul.

Also, the change from being considered lesser to being feared, in regards to Elven Mages.

Furthemore, we should examine the lives of City Elves in Ferelden. In Highever, we have evidence to suggest their lives are better. Nelaros is a blacksmith's apprentice, where he's able to not only create weapons but wield them -- supported by how he's described as fighting like a savage warrior, indicating training.

Eadric says that his family lived on a farm and that his mother was a servant/cook to the farmers and that he would've hated to have lived in an Alienage. He seems fond of his time on the farm, indicating that Highever is certainly nicer to its Elven denizens.

Alas, it is not perfect, as if we were to take Sarethia's comments on Alienage life as any indication -- she is the Hahren of the Highever Alienage -- Elves that leave the walls and get homes of their own have their homes burned down and looted by some people. This is, however, as much a fault of the City Elves that still reside in the Alienage as it is the fault of the humans that torch the homes, for the Alienage Elves will disown any Elf that leaves the Alienage, saying they've "given up being Elven".
