I have spent most of the game with a rogue perpetually in my party. I'd like to travel with another character, but I want to know the cost of not having a rogue.
Is it possible to miss side quests by being unable to pick a certain door? Can unique items be missed by not having someone to pick a chest?
Typically I noticed the items in chests are nothing special; they can return decent coin but that is about it.
Going rogueless...

So far, from what I have gathered. Is you will miss some exp (actually, it can add up) from not picking locks/disarming traps. Plus lose some coin, lose gifts (I know the Dalish Boots for Zevran are in a locked chest), and maybe miss some side quest stuff, such as love letters (which I have never once completed anyway.
This is one reason I hate the four party system, and it should be at least five. If you want the good balanced group you need (for any game) tank, healer/cc, rogue, damage dealer. There is no room for variety unless you are playing on an easy difficult setting or just like to torment yourself.
It's one reason I never use Sten or Oghren, there is just no 'room' for them.
Anyway rant over.
You will lose out on exp, coin, and possibly side quests, yes.

The only real thing you'll miss out on when going rogueless is mainly the loss of xp gain. A bit of coin lost too but the main bummer is that you dont get the 20-60xp gains when picking locks or disarming traps.

I went without a rogue and there are no serious problems with it except the xp gain and the lack of some generic loot. There is certainly enough loot and xp if you don't want a rogue in your party. I ended up at level 20 rogueless and completing around 40% of the game.

Most of the times when I am rogueless, I go back afterward to the instance with my rogue to pick up what I've missed. It takes longer, but I'm in no rush. One area where you really need to bring a rogue though is that castle where you rescue Anora. There is an awesome treasure room in there.

If you don't want a lockpicker in your party, all you are missing out is some xp, gold and items. Lots of vendor trash and a few gems here and there
I reccomend doing a pre-Landsmeet re-sweep of every major area in the game with Leliana levelled up with high cunning and max Lockpicking. The xp does add up and as others have noted, you won't miss out on quests or the main storyline or get stuck in a dungeon or anything, but... it does add up. Ironically, I had to do this on my rogue playthrough because he was pure dual weild.

i'm doing a rogueless playthrough right now. there's no content that you won't be able to access. what you miss is the ability to open chests and disarm traps. that ends up costing you a little bit of experience and gold but thats it. its not a noticeable amount of either though, my party is levelling easily and has plenty of money.

don't think you can do the love lettters quests haha. I like that quest. I like doing every quest I can, so you won't be able to do that. But you should be able to do almost every quests. Other rogue quests require your main to be a rogue, so no loss there.

In my current playthrough I'm going rogue-less. I haven't encountered any problems that couldn't be solved by going back to the dungeon I just cleared with leliana to pick all the locks. Except the anora rescue. I'd bring a rogue there.

I'm sure that you wouldn't be able to do the love letter quest. I'm pretty sure that there are some other little side quests like that you couldn't complete either. You'd also miss out on some gold and random junk (including named items). Don't forget the worst thing though. All those highlighted chests would taunt you with the fact that you had no idea what might be inside for the entire playthrough. I don't know about you, but it'd make me crazy.

This. Even though I know those locked chests contain crap 99% of the time, they still taunt me every time.
The only thing that is remotely tied to the main questline that I can think of: Isn't there one small part of the quest in Orzammar, in the Proving Grounds, where you need decent lockpick skill to get both fighters to fight for you? At least, I never found another way to do it. Although, it doesn't really seem to matter one way or the other, anyhow.

So yea.. No, just no. There's alot of different configurations that work well and that won't cause any headaches and I suggest you just use whatever you're having the most fun with.
My first playthrough had a dualwield warrior instead of a tank which worked just fine (even better than dedicated tank for the most part tbh). You could probably build a weird rogue, 2h warrior or a arcane mage to do the job aswell.
Instead of listing every possible config I'll just repeat that building a group and using an dificulty setting that makes it all challenging and fun is a pretty healthy objective for anyone.
more ontopic: a very rough guestimate without anything to back it up with is that you lose out on 30% of the total gold ingame, 1 quest, 1 random encounter and 10k xp or so.

You can easily get over a thousand XP from traps/chests alone - so you'll level a bit slower. You'll also miss out on at least three nice items. The shopkeeper in Lothering has a Tier 6 or 7 crossbow, which is a fine chunk of cash and (at that point) a good weapon, even with the bug. The Thorn of the Dead Gods (version 2) is also from pickpocketing.

The only quest you won't be able to do is the Love Letters. Everything else you will be fine doing. You will lose out on a few gift items, nothing serious except for the gift for Zevran.
As others mentioned you will lose out on ALOT of gold and exp. Definately recommend going back with Lelianna once cleared and rerunning the zone just to unlock everything.
