Is it just me or does sniping suck in ME1?
You have to pump loads of point into it and get a seriously good rifle before they are remotely accurate enough to actually use, so they're useless for the first 3/4 of the game, but even then enemies are rarely in good sniping range. They always seem to be mid-range when you first see them - and then they come running straight towards you.
Just thinking out loud as I'm mopping up my last few achievements, and unlocking the sniper rifle one is seeming like it'll be a challenge. Anyone got any tips?

Sniper Rifles suffer the same penalties as Assault Rifles: You have to put a lot of points into them to increase Accuracy, and you need a gun that has an actual Accuracy rating (rank IV for Assault Rifles, about the same for Sniper Rifles). With enough cash you can get a HMWSR VII pretty early.
With practice, you can use it like a shotgun in close range. If you have High Explosive Rounds you can have them do some real damage. Lowering the difficulty so you can kill with it should help.
If you have Pinnacle Station DLC, you can choose one of the survival missions and just run around with it killing as many enemies as you can.
Some missions do have some good sniping spots. One of the Geth Incursion missions (on Chasca or Casbin or something like that), you can drive up onto to the top of a mountain and just snipe down on some geth. After killing them all, a Geth dropship comes and drops off a bunch of geth that you can keep shooting until it flies away. Keep reloading the last autosave (or manual save if you made one) to keep doing that to get your achievement.
For some rooms, you can just hang back by the door and just snipe everything. Usually the AI is not smart enough to come at you through the door.
Hope that helps.

Just as a comment several of the storyline worlds also have places where you can snipe very effectively. Virmire, Feros, Noveria, and Therum, all have spots where it expects you to drive the mako, you can walk and use your sniper rifle very effectively in those areas. It only takes 8 points to completely do away with the scope sway. So you can easily have that by level 15 or so (just a little after leaving the citadel)

Honestly, the Sniper Rifles in my opinion are like one of the best things about ME1. High Explosive Rounds plus scram rails, and I forget the name of the cooling upgrade, means that not only do most guys go down with one shot, especially with the Marksman Ability, but you can (and I did) take down the Geth Colossus much more quickly than normal. It's all about investing in the weapon quickly and getting that one rifle (Spectre Gear is the only one for me)...though I invested in it during my second play through, my first was the assault rifle.
However, there are major overheating problems, make sure you get those shots well placed and that you have your squad in position to back you up, and make sure that you move as carefully as possible, rushing ahead will only end badly.
