-Terminator 1 and 2
-Blade Runner
-Star Trek (all but TMP, V, Insurrection. Nemesis was ok but it definitely had problems)
-I am hesitant to put Star Wars here because of the debate as to if it is actually sci-fi and not a fantasy story with a sci-fi cover. Original trilogy was awesome regardless.
-Stargate

edit: I watched the trailer for Event Horizon and it's definitely not the one - the movie I had in mind revolved around dialogue and psychology, there was no action that I'd recall.
And it ended by the ship captain/scientist going into the Black Hole, purely because of his (pseudo-)scientific reasoning and faith that the hole will bring him salvation. Or something.

Is it a remake of some other film? Because the one I have in my mind's eye is from the 70's-80's or something.

That would be The Black Hole. It came out in 1979. I have it on my list. It's a great movie.

That was pretty dark for a Disney (?iirc) movie.
The scene where they unmask a crew member and reveal their identity freaked me out as a kid.

Bladerunner
Alien (1)
Terminator (1)
So far so easy.
I think both 'Brazil' and 'Stalker' are awesome movies, but I don't quite fit them into SF. I could also mention von Trier's 'Element of Crime' here. They are in a way, but...
It was a long time since I saw the original 'Solaris', hard to judge from memory. But I think it may have been a bit too long.
The Thing
District 9
Contact was pretty cool and different.
