I read them a long time ago, so long that I barely remember much of the detail. However, when I first encountered a Tranquil in DA it made me think of WoT.

The last book in that series I read was...oh heck, I can't remember for sure. I think it must have been the eighth, Path of Daggers? That was many years ago. I had been reading the series all through my junior high and high school years, but my recreational reading was waylaid in college and I never managed to return to it. I did try to pick up Winter's Heart a few years ago, but it had been too long and I had forgotten too much to be able to enjoy it. This is something I've always meant to finish one day, but never seem to get around to starting over on the first book. I think my favorite in that series was The Shadow Rising; isn't that the one where they journey out into the Aiel Wastes and eventually discover the lost ancient city of Rhuidean? That was fantastic; I loved every bit of it.

I'm currently working on Hume's Treatise of Human Nature which is requiring my undivided attention. Maybe someday I'll get back to Wheel of Time...

Wheel of time is that series by Robert Jordan, right? If so, I read them all in german. Great story. But it pissed me they end before the Seanchans are defeated by Rand Al´Thor and the Aiel.

Have read every one of them, more out of sheer and total stubborness in the case of the last four or five. That far into the series, he needed to start providing some resolutions to the zillions of subplots, but he'd resolve one or two and introduce sixteen.

When Jordan said he planned on never finishing the series with a definitive conclusion, I juuuust about gave up.

The first three books are good, and if you don't mind incessant whining and complaining, the rest aren't too bad. The really sad thing is, the overall story arc is excellent, the main characters are at least redeemable (Mat Cauthon ftw), the setting is gorgeous and lavish. It's Jordan's ego that no one could put a stop to and that came perilously close to ruining it for a good many folk.

Think the wheels within wheels of Dune on the giant purple crack rock, then multiply by a thousand.

Those I've heard are actually supposed to be pretty good. I picked up the first for hubby for Christmas, and won't read it until he does. I've slogged through this far to see how it ends, so...ve shall zee.

Nope.

Anyone here actually READ books?

Every once in a while, yes. I have to get into particularly uncomfortable positions to read, so it has to be special. The Wheel of Time has not earned my discomfort, unfortunately.:P

Now The Gathering Storm was a pretty awesome book. I was pretty pissed off with books 7-11, that's why half way through book 7, I just went online and read each chapter summary online. Boring? Yes. But it got me all the way through those books. Still, it's a pity that most new readers will never get to The Gathering Storm without going through those five rather baseless books that could have been put into one novel. Almost all of the fans of the series I know are those who read the books during the 1990s. I was lucky enough to be warned about the books after Lord of Chaos.

I'm re-reading WoT at the moment. It's one of my favourite stories. I can't wait for Tarmon Gaidon near the end of 2011!

I just finished reading The Gathering Storm about two weeks ago. I was surprised that it turned out to be a really good book; I wondered if the new author would mess anything up. Mat is still awesome and Egwene still needs to be strangled.

You bet, read alot.  Can't get to sleep unless I read for about an hour.  Mostly history with a preference for ancient (Greek/Roman/Mid East, etc)

Currently however reading RA Salvatore's Drow Elf triology... ever hear of a dark elf character by the name of  "Drizzt?"

These are great stories.  The author's imagination is staggering.

It's amazing all the small details there are that don't stand out until you re-read all the books. If you've read The Gathering Storm you'll know what I mean by the "That dress you're wearing is green" revelation. I've found hints pointing to that waaaay back in book two! Robert Jordan definitely wasn't making up the plot as he went along. Even things like what the Green Man said to Rand at the end of book one can only be appreciated if you read the story again.

I'm half way through book six at the moment (this is my first re-read). I'm hoping that books seven through ten are full of these little hints and are better this time around as well.

I read 10 of them, then like others, kind of wandered away because it never seemed to have any kind of an ending. I've read other series that went 10 books and finished, but when it kept going..I didn't

Again, like someone else said, I got heavily involved in finishing my degree in computer forensics, that put a stop to entertainment for a while lol!

Yeah, I see a lot of people who stop the series at books 7-11. And the only way I know to get through those books is to read the short summaries of each chapter online, and even that can get boring, but it's worth it if you want to finally get to an other good book of the series(The Gathering Storm).

I didn't think books 7-11 were as bad as most people think. By book 7 most of the plots and characters are established so there was going to be a period of characters manoeuvring for position. There was just so many that it was going to take a few books to get through it all. The calm before the storm is one way of putting it. Most stories have a quiet third in them in the middle, it's just that in a 14 book story that means there'll be 4-5 books of quiet.

The only thing that really bothered me was the 2 books that had absolutely nothing get resolved. Wait 2 years for a book and at the end of it all the characters are trying to accomplish what they were in the book before... it's painful I tell you. An example is Elayne and Nynaeve's quest for the Bowl. That took sooo long!

What got me through them is the promise of Tarmon Gaidon at the end. I gotta know what happens!

Yeah, even when I found the books boring at times, I still wanted to see how everything ties in in the end. After I got through book 6, there was just so much going through my mind about what will happen next and in what direction will the story turn to that I just kept on going and going. Though I still found the books after Lord of Chaos a bit boring(I thought the eleventh book was pretty good actually), there was still some unsolved mystery in the series that I still wanted to find out. And besides, the series already left a great impression on me so I was still a fan. I'm already content with the twelve book any.

I've almost finished book six now and I've thought of a little experiment to do with books 7-10 as I'm re-reading them. I'm going to make a list of all the events that have a large impact on the plot as a whole and what chapter they appear in. I think it would be interesting to see exactly how much actually happened of importance in those books.

In A Song of Ice and Fire related thread, there has got to be at least one person that mentions the Wheel of Time. In a Wheel of Time related thread, there has to got to be at least one person that mentions A Song of Ice and Fire.

Now, why is this? What sin did men do to deserve this?
