Actually, it would work in any ending.  In TZ, sometimes the good guy even failed. 

Commander Shepard, sapce marine, hero, icon.
Who learned too late that sometimes being the hero just isn't enough.
That when ego and artistic integrity collide no one comes out the winner.
Lesson to be learned in and out of the Twilight Zone.

The more I think about it, this could probably solve 2 or 3 outstanding issues:

1 - Actually presents Shepard with more detail about "why" this conflict exists (maybe through images he projects of previous cycles and their repeated attempts to unsuccessfully solve this organic-synthetic issue)

Or better yet, he shows up sometime around the end of the 2nd act (I'm thinking Rannoch after defeating the Reaper) and brings back the original dark energy ending.

2 - Refuse changes from Shepard meekly trying to remain true to his ideals to Shepard gathering more than enough energy and resolve for a galaxy-shaking final showdown (giant robots optional).

Shepard is going to have to  Spiral Engery... EVERYONE is getting mech and the Normady is going to get a bigger verison of the Normandy that is the size of moon and turns in mech itself.. 

And  the has to do that  creepy open up a hole in space and peak through  entrance.

You need it to get it, and you certainly need it to get more of it.
But if you don't already have any of it to begin with, you cant get any of it to get started which means you really have no idea how to get it in the first place, do you?
You can share it, sure.
You can even stockpile it if you'd like,
But you can't fake it.
Flaunting it, needing it, wishing for it.
The point is, if you've never had any of it, ever, people just seem to know.

Now you know... for this to work...

I will believe in the me that believes in myself, all life, both organic and synthetic, and the future we forge for ourselves!

(Blood eezo merge around the blade, forming a god-like Mass Effect Core)

And I believe in this core...

(Everything switches to black and white for the ensuing epic event)

THAT IS MY SOUL!!!!!

(Shepard's defiant battle cry and Catalyst's enraged scream echo throughout the galaxy as they collide. When the stardust settles, the Catalyst is beaten, its body rapidly collapsing from Shepard's core piercing the ethereal construct.)

Catalyst - Then you must be willing to protect the galaxy at all costs.

Shepard - Of course we will. Sentient life isn't that foolish.

(Cue victory explosions, triumphant return and whatever melancholic moral message of responsibility the game wants to end on.)
