I've never had a problem joining public lobbies, but never could join friends in private ones. While your guide wasn't my solution, it most certainly led me to it. Long story short, I had to bridge my DSL modem. In the research your post led me through, it appeared that co-op is nothing more than a network, with the host being the server. Players joining are 'workstations' logging on to the server. Therefore, each workstation has to have it's own IP address. For joining the host in ME3 co-op, this means that the 'Public IP' assigned by your ISP has to be visible. To do that, the modem needs to be bridged. For those wanting to try this when nothing else has worked, I recommend contacting your ISP help desk and explain what you're trying to do and they'll (at least Centurylink did for me) will lead you right through the process.
Thanks again Caratinoid for the help.

2) Check if Mass Effect is exclusively using that port on you PC. To do that start Mass Effect 3 and create a private lobby then (if you are on Windows 7) bring up windows task manager, on "Perfomance" tab select "Resource Monitor", on the "Network" tab check "MassEffect3.exe" in the list of processes and you should see ports used under "Listening ports". It MUST be using UDP 3659 (it will also be using UDP 9999 and one random UDP port but those do not matter). This tool also checks windows firewall status for that port which should be "Allowed, not restricted". If you select all processes than mass effect must be the only program using that port. If you see some other program using that port you must deal with it accordingly depending on what it is.
My firewall status is "Allowed, restricted"
How can I change it to "Allowed, not restricted" I use Windows 7

Go to the 'Control Panel' and select 'System and Security'. Under 'Windows Firewall', you should see "Allow a program through Windows Firewall". You should be able to figure it out from there. I don't use Windows Firewall at all, so I'm not familiar with the rest.100RenegadePoints wrote...

I don't think the patch changed anything in the way you connect to other people, I have tested it after the patch and from what I can see it still works the same so the problem is most probably on your end. Few things to look for:AbhijitSM wrote...

It can be an antivirus software with firewall capability that is messing things up. Some people get problems after each update to the game because antivurus or some firewall program on your computer doesn't recognize the game after an update anymore or thinks that it's infected or something and blocks it's network access. Norton and Avast were responsible for some problems with mass effect after previous patch (not able to connect or the game not starting at all).
Also, depending on your network configuration, it's possible that you will see what might seem like a random behavior where you will be able to connect to someone this one time but will fail to connect to the same person 1 hour later or random things like only being able to connect to certain people. So it's possible that you were just lucky and haven't run in to this problem before. If you haven't done so already you can eliminate a lot of factors that are responsible for this 'random' behavior by manually forwarding the ports to your computer.

Well...i have forwarded all ports (including 3659) required for me3 manually already. In fact the port 3659 was already forwarded almost a year back (did it for bf3). Also for the antivirus/firewall solution i have already put everything related to me3 & origin in the exclusion list for my avast/windows firewall.
Any suggestions???

Have you tested it with port checker? Do you see that port beeing used by mass effect when you create a lobby?
If port checker says it's ok, then it's some software that is still blocking that port. Suggestion in this case? Reinstall windows and don't install any firewalls or virusses that scan in realtime on a gaming system, it creates more problems than it fixes really. Just to give you a very practical example: let's say you download some virus from internet which saves everything you type in browser (like creditcard numbers), do you think this virus will have any problems sending logged data back to some hackers garage because you are 'protected' by firewall? No. Because most firewalls don't block outgoing connections anyway and incoming connectios will be blocked by your router in most cases anyway. So what's the point? To screw some legit programs over? Just my slightly biased opinion here.

I can't connect AT ALL, but I just discovered the ability to make exceptions to ports in my Windows Firewall, thanks to this forum. ME3 and Origin are already on the exceptions list -- is there some way to put the ports I need on it, too???
You don't need to specify any ports in windows firewall, by adding mass effect to the windows firewall exception list (which will usually occur automatically when you launch mass effecf for the first time) you allow mass effect to use any port it needs to.
What do you mean by 'can't connect at all'? Was everything working before? Do you mean you can't connect to ea servers in the main menu? If it's that then I don't think it's an issue with windows firewall (you can quickly test it by turning widows firewall off of course) but rather some other firewall program on your computer (such as Norton Antivirus for example).

While you cover a lot of issues (awesome btw) I cant find a solution for my problem.
The problem: Game starts, I get to the screen "Press any key", the main menu comes, I see "Communicating" in my top left corner but then after a short while the spinning circle freezes and I get "Mass Effect 3 server is unavailable at this time, please try again later"
When has it started: begin September, I believe there was a patch back then. Before that, since the day I've bought the game I could play multiplayer without any problems, no lag, no disconnect, all the DLCs working. But since September I cant get past the main menu, let alone get into the multiplayer.
Attempted solutions:
1. reinstalling the game
2. reinstalling Origin
3. deleting the Mass Effect 3 folder in Documents/BioWare, turning off Cloud Storage, let the game repopulate the Mass Effect 3 folder and then insert the saves backups (got it from http://social.biowar...index/9708768/1, forgot the exact page sorry)
4. repairing the game via Origin
5. now I have been reading your post and I've checked my ports with the PFPortChecker. 3659 UDP is open, got 6000UDP (finally) open as well
Speaking of firewall, ME3 has always been an allowed through the firewall, right from the beginning.
I have tried to run the game on a different network, the same Error message. My friend and I have tried switching accounts to check: so he at his home logged in with my accound and I at my home logged in on his and he could play on my account without any troubles while I still got the same "Mass Effect 3 server is unavailable at this time, please try again later"
Can you (or someone else) please suggest any solutions? Haven't been able to play the game for over a month now and I think that EA customer service is just ignoring the problem hoping it would go away by itself (have tried to contact them multiple times)

and read this bit
'Just want to point out that if Origin is the cause of your disconnect, complaining on Bioware forums won't help you. I have a similar issue that I have been dealing with for over 2 months.
http://social.biowar.../index/14072087
On your PC, go to C:\\ProgramData\\Origin\\Logs\\Client_Log.html
This is an Origin Log. It will capture your connections and disconnections from the Origin Client.
If you've had Origin as Long as I have, it will be a pretty large file. You may want to close your Origin Client and rename the file to something like "Client_Log-Oc19.html" That way you can archive the old file.
When you open Origin next, it will make a new Client_Log.html. The next time you are kicked off, Open that log and look for some errors.
If you get a connection problem when trying to accesses "https://download.dm....gin/config.xml" then you have the same issue that I do... corrupt Origin Profile. Contact EA support for Origin to have them forward your issue to an expert.
"
Noticed that my machine indeed has this error listed in the log as
OriginServiceResponse QNetworkReply error code [202] HTTP status code [403] https://download.dm....igin/config.xml
followed by
Failed with REST error code -1
I'm wondering if my profile is indeed corrupt or not.

Now I'm wondering: does this mean it's a local file that's corrupt or something on EA's end. Going to delete Origin with YourUninstaller and clean reg files with CCleaner to be sure that as many as possible files are gone.
Will be back once Origin and ME are reinstalled to post an update. If that fails then I would guess the corruption is somewhere on EA's end, going to contact them

Funny thing is: I've installed ME3 on other computer just to check and there it starts up without any problems, could go into multiplayer menu. Haven't tried playing though since it's not my computer.
Gonna write a message to EA support, hopefully they'll answer soon enough.

Huh, weird that! I've tried installing the demo on my Xbox, and there I get the same issue that I can't connect. So it must be something in my router, but as I've opened up the 3659-port already and tried disabling the firewall too, I can't think of anything else.

After pestering EA for 2 weeks they have finally responded. They have requested both UOTrace and DXDIAG logs from me and eventually they said:
"Thank you for updating this support request.
After having tried all possible resolutions for this query, we have decided to escalate this to our higher support department for further assistance. Please note that a higher support representative will contact you through email at the earliest, however, the response time may be delayed if the contact flow is high.
We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced thus far and truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this matter. Please feel free to write us if you have any other queries or concerns by visiting at http://ea.help.com"
So my advice to everyone who has tried multiple solutions and still gets "Mass Effect server unavailable at this time ...": continue to pester EA (I have made 10 cases before they have responded counting from my first one in September) and *fingers crossed* they will contact you soon enough.
(I say "pester", but never forget to stay polite, rage walls wont help you)
In addition I'm listing the solutions I have tried just as a summary. Who knows, maybe someone will find help in it
(listed in no particular order)
1. reinstalling the game completely (including removal of registry files)
2. reinstalling Origin completely (including removal of registry files)
3. repairing and updating the game through Origin
4. disabling both firewall and anti-virus
5. going to C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc to delete entries ending with ea.com (I had none)
6. purging the BioWare Mass Effect 3 folder located in my Documents and letting Origin repopulate it (don't forget to turn off Cloud Storage in this case)
7. running both Origin and ME3 as administrator
8. running the following steps
Hold down the Windows key and press R
At the Run command, type cmd and press enter
type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter
Type ipconfig /registerdns and press enter
Type ipconfig /release and press enter
Type ipconfig /renew and press enter
Type netsh winsoc reset and then press enter
Restart the computer
9. Origin option "keep up to date" has been checked since the first installation
10 power cycled my modem
11. setting to "manual" and disabling UPnP Device Host together with SSDP (this by using Run and typing "services.msc")
Hold the line fellas :-P
