O rly? They wanted one of them to die.
Maybe they figured it would be way to difficult to have both of them in ME2? Or, let's be honest, they probably figured that we forcing the player to leave one of their friends behind would be a quick and easy way for some drama.

Alas, poor Kaidan. We hardly knew ye.

My Shepard "knew" him very well.

I think most male players decided to "sacrifice" Kaidan

SHAME ON YOU MALE PLAYERS!!!!!
Though Ashley is awesome in ME1, so I will let it pass. I really wish I could have saved them both. With Ashley coming back to herself.

I'd blow 'em both up if I could, especially after 5 minutes on Mars.
On my second playthrough, Ashley's bickering really pissed me off(yes, I had Kaiden die 2 times consecutively). If I had a chance, my renegade FemShep would've gave her a nice headshot in front of James as a warning.

Well you can shoot her on the citadel so what's stopping you

I keep wishing for that renegade option to pop up. Hell, I keep wondering if it wouldn't be a Paragon...RenegonSQ wrote...

Having the option to save both would make it a non-choice. The suicide mission in ME2 suffers from that exact fate unfortunately.
Exactly. Having an option to save both presents the idea that one of the options is better. Like recruiting Wrex and Garrus, or yeah the suicide mission. Most ME2 players now only lose people in the suicide mission because the intend to do so.

'Supposed to' is the wrong word. 'It was considered' is more accurate.Cerbrus operative wrote...
It seems we were supposed to be able to save both Ashley and Kaidan in Virmire, But that option got removed for some reason.

Hey its not like I wanted to Bioware set it up that way one of the reason why I hate Virmare... I saw that choice coming a mile way from the start of game.

Guess you're right. Still, I would have given so much if I could have saved them both and kill anyone else (except Wrex).
But it gave me a replay value, and make the mission very emotional and realistic. Another point for Kaidan and Ash.

Well, the suicide mission is not about sacrificing anyone. It's about earning your happy ending. It's only meaningful the fisrt time you do it (without a guide of course)
Yeah I cheered after was able to resolve that stupid Jack and Miranda fight and keep the both loyal...
I was all pumped to have a squad of 14 bad ass commandos ready to take on the Reapers and then... I took an art to the knee...
