What rope? I can only think of 3 in the game. 1 to get into Deirex's tower in Ust Natha, a second other to get out of the sahuagin city of caverns and possibly a third to traverse the watery tunnels in Abazigals lair (edit, think you may be here. Talk to the dying monk). All available in those areas.

For reasons best known to themselves SCS has altered the plot and placed the monks-rope somewhere in Amkethran... none of the shops appear to have it and without that rope my game ends here.

Relax, go for a pint.

Details here

Although I'd have thought you'd checked there, so maybe bugged?

The workaround is obvious: don't pick up the rope! (The innkeeper in Amkethran can give you some.

Bugger, he didn't have a rope to pick up an the inn keeper doesn't have it listed... looks like I'll have to SK it into the game and take another re-load?

What about the other 3 merchants: cleric, Lazarus, and pantaloons gnome? Or could it be that one of the frog jailors taken it from him and it's on one of THEIR corpses?

The rope is not in the inkeeper's store, you just need to ask him for some rope.

It's sort of a plot device added by SCS, because you will have another encounter when you return with the rope to Abazigal's. Also, it's a slightly amusing reminder that there are some basics that even an epic level party can't find a substitute for.

Yeah, it's mostly just a way to make sure the party returns to the antechamber of Firkraag's lair. (There aren't many places in the game where you can site the kind of encounter I wanted to have at this point.) But yes, since I had to do it anyway, I thought I'd have some fun with it.

I’ve moved on but just FYI as feedback on this mod;

I give it a C for scripting because the rope is a plot item that people can’t complete the game without... Simply having the yellow dragon send me to the inn as a side quest would have worked just fine without breaking my game over a pointless battle.

It gets an F for documentation, this quest only added a journal entry that told me to go to Amkethran (not the inn) & when I looked at the readme for extra clues (still nothing about the inn)... it was only that Gate70 found an obscure forum reference that the inn was finally revealed.

p.s. I'm an SCS fan and find most of the basic scripting to be sound but this is not the first time a tactics option has buggered my game. :wub:

I'm not massively moved by either of those objections.

- The sidequest trick doesn't work because it's necessary for the party to go to Amkethran and return to Abazigal's lair. That means it's got to be plot-critical. (I'm not saying there isn't a better way to do this than mine, but your suggestion doesn't work.

- There just aren't many people to talk to in Amkethran. A quest which requires you to talk to several people to find who can help you is completely standard in BG2 (albeit a bit uninformative relative to current game paradigms). And you must have talked to the innkeeper in order to open his store, so I'm kind of puzzled as to how you can not have seen the option to ask him.

I'll take the quantitative grading seriously if you provide me with specific examples of what would count as A, B, C, D, and E.

Hmm. It's fair enough to say "find some rope in Amkethran" so long as the dialogue option appears. An experienced adventurer should have no difficulty by this stage but if the game is bugged on your first run through it must be extremely annoying. Maybe as a compromise, have the location available as a hidden/spoiler item so anybody who has the issue knows it is their install at fault. Or go back to the dragon and have an additional beg / toady option. For all ussnorway and I knew the rope location could have changed between that forum post and the current version.

I tried installing SCS II yesterday (keen to encounter the extra Abazigal dragons) but tobex chucked out a load of error messages under Ubuntu & Wine. Although the games then started my characters weren't visible, then after a save tobex failed with an error 5. Will try copying/registering the tobex dll but not holding out much hope and what I found search wise didn't really help me. Have zapped the error messages (I had to re-install SOA & TOB from scratch) so will take a folder copy and keep the messages/logs if it does the same again.

ps, can't wait to see the A-F rating definitions

edit: Never mind the linux install bit - just downloaded v21 (20 last time) and installing the proper way as I seem to recall that worked last year...me & my gung-honess. Hopefully will work this time.

edit2: Well, no crashes yet but a number of log errors (sample below) and an invisible Irenicus talking to an invisible charname so maybe the write is to do with sprite/avatar viewing. Plus invisible golem, thief, Imoen, Minsc and Jaheira. Could be fun to continue anyway!

That's probably a good idea. Having said which, I don't think I've had bug reports on that quest for ages. (The post linked to above is four years old, just after the first release of the component.) It's possible that there's a bug in ussnorway's install, but it looks as if s/he just didn't see the dialog option on the innkeeer. (ussnorway, can you confirm? - if it really is a bug, I'd like to know.)

Regarding Linux errors: there's not a lot I can do to help as I don't really have access to a Linux/OSX testing installation. Probably your best bet is to disable ToBEx, which you can do with only minor loss of SCS functionality. There are instructions in the readme to do so (you'll have to reinstall, though.)

Thanks, nice to see a modder take the time to respond. In my case F stands for Failed to read all of the readme.

Woohoo!
Looks to be working now, so just need to re-biff and can start a non-BGT Ascension/SCS run with my dwarven barbarian, a cavalier and fighter/illusionist + Imoen, Jan and mr glowy-eyes. Looking forward to the dragons.

I only installed the improved shade lord, abazigal and minor encounters in addition to core SCS II (otherwise I'd spend the next year buffing a 6 person party). Might re-review and add a little more before I start. Decisions decisions...

I reloaded my check point save then re-talked to everyone in town and re-asked every question I could think of... This is what the inn keeper has to say for himself;

Did you add a different inn keeper or is there some special sequence to the talks? Regardless an (talk to the inn keeper) entry in the readme would have alerted me that this is in fact a bug... although my current build isn’t exactly overloaded with unusual adjustments. My weilog is here FYI the HD romance does appear to break Improved Irenicus in Hell v20.

p.s. on a hunch I had Immy cast ‘Freedom’ up top and sure enough I can now sum the deva, I figure the first Draconis fight must have imprisoned/ mazed him... one mystery solved!
p.p.s. It’s she...for what it’s worth I did enjoy fighting your dragon ambush once my game was fixed. :wub:

Aha. It is a bug - interesting that no-one's come across it again. The "do you have some rope?" option is added to the dialog you get when you talk to the innkeeper a second or subsequent time, but not a first time. I must have subconsciously assumed that anyone who's got to Abazigal must have rested in Amkethran already.

Do me a favour: reload your save, talk to the innkeeper, come out, talk to him again. You should get the option then. I'll put this one on the to-do list.

& thanks for the compatibility warning about HD romance. If there are other bugs you've come across with SCS/SCSII (it sounds as if you've been playing through both fairly thoroughly) if you have a minute maybe you could mention them at the SCS forum at Gibberlings 3? I generally find the Bioware forums a bit too unstructured to trawl for SCS bug reports.

Cool yet another mystery solved. :wub:

The HD romance is pretty new but I will post it up on their forum & expect they will fix it at that end. I suppose I can see your point, this official bioware forum has all the high tech features of an old out back dunny but the people are nice... its home.

Oh, I like the BW forum as a community, it's just not that useful as a technical resource.
