I actually like Jowan despite him being one of the few characters I consider truly whiny. Mousestalker summed up most of what bothered me about the mage origin. Granted, railroading is impossible to avoid when the very concept of these origins is to force a background on your character. They are more or less identical to Mass Effect's background choices; except we get to play through them rather than just have it as a footnote on our character sheet.
What I disliked about the mage origin was that it left me feeling cold. Here was this guy who was supposed to be my lifelong friend, but nothing he does or says establishes any sort of bond I can latch on to. The first time I meet him he bombards me with questions he *knows* I can't answer, and gets annoyed if I refuse to. Then he dumps his fears on me, without telling me why he has them. When Jowan finally reveals his reasons and halfbaked solution, he lies about being a Blood Mage... despite the fact my character is jeopardizing her freedom, perhaps even her life to help him.
Jowan is not presented as a friend. He knowingly lies to you and the woman he claims to love because he knows she would dump him and that most Circle mages would not brazenly assist a Blood Mage. That's the height of selfishness. Despite that, I still felt sorry for the guy. But from an in-character perspective, I wish the choice in handling that mess went further than a binary option of helping Jowan or ratting him out.
It would have been nice if you could prove he was a Blood Mage by investigating it beforehand once you discover why Irving took the blood magic books from the library. That probably would have made for an awkward transition to Ostagar though; since the crux of these origins is you are forced to leave your home for some reason.
It was a very different experience from the human noble origin, where it was established in a few sentences that your entire family loves you, and everyone in the castle is respectful. Not just because you are a noble and their boss, but that they saw you grow up and genuinely seem to like you. It is what made the climax of that origin so emotionally moving and painful. Whereas the mage origin kinda left me scratching my head with all the assumptions they made about my character, despite doing little to instill those feelings in the actual plot. Jowan is alright as a character, but the origin itself was weak.
Apologies for this bit of ramble. I probably should have went with "What mousestalker wrote +1."
