To be fair I think that Jowan was all too harshly punished for a couple or relatively easy to make mistakes.....he dabbled in blood magic because he knew they wanted to make him a tranquil and too earn his freedom along with the ability to be with the woman he loved.....who can seriously blame him for that? I can't.

He dabbled with Blood Magic BEFORE they decided to make him a tranquil. The reason they wanted to make him tranquil is because they found out he was dabbling.

I think the real weakness of the mage origin is that we're told we have this long-standing relationship with Jowan, but we never see it. The other origins, you spend some time in the company of your loved ones, as a player getting a feel for the relationships and personalities of the people involved *before* all hell breaks loose. It doesn't feel like you get any of that time with Jowan, so instead he comes off as a whiny (mostly that's the voice actor, I think) leech kind of a guy rather than a friend -- making the plot feel a lot more externally forced rather than intrinsic to the characters and situation.

Getting into the role of the mage origin, I had to make that mental assumption "ok, even though it doesn't feel like it, let's pretend I like this guy and don't want bad things to happen to him" in order to enjoy the character. That opened up a lot of possibilities, for me, for a character who felt that her friend of years betrayed everything she stood for (and quite possibly would have gotten her killed in the process) and, later, to question whether she even believed anymore in everything she'd once held sacrosanct. I also love the templar/mage tension, but that's another thread.

I do think it requires some player-inventiveness to make the story feel well-rounded though, more so than the other origins I've played (dwarf noble, Dalish elf, human noble, male city elf).

Though I do admit it gives some insight into the mage / templar relationship. The head of the magi (can't recall his name) doesn't reveal to Gregoir (sp??) I was "helping" until after we exit the area. He really wanted to bring the templars down a notch w/ this one - and see some people killed in the process. Who's the "evil" one here?

I think the sentries were just magically enchanted defence ornaments, they weren't actually alive.Plus, Irving was just being Pragmatic, Jowan's fate was sealed and Lilly was the one who lead him astray. If Jowan was going down, she might as well go down with him.

I actually like Jowan despite him being one of the few characters I consider truly whiny. Mousestalker summed up most of what bothered me about the mage origin. Granted, railroading is impossible to avoid when the very concept of these origins is to force a background on your character. They are more or less identical to Mass Effect's background choices; except we get to play through them rather than just have it as a footnote on our character sheet.

What I disliked about the mage origin was that it left me feeling cold. Here was this guy who was supposed to be my lifelong friend, but nothing he does or says establishes any sort of bond I can latch on to. The first time I meet him he bombards me with questions he *knows* I can't answer, and gets annoyed if I refuse to. Then he dumps his fears on me, without telling me why he has them. When Jowan finally reveals his reasons and halfbaked solution, he lies about being a Blood Mage... despite the fact my character is jeopardizing her freedom, perhaps even her life to help him.

Jowan is not presented as a friend. He knowingly lies to you and the woman he claims to love because he knows she would dump him and that most Circle mages would not brazenly assist a Blood Mage. That's the height of selfishness. Despite that, I still felt sorry for the guy. But from an in-character perspective, I wish the choice in handling that mess went further than a binary option of helping Jowan or ratting him out.

It would have been nice if you could prove he was a Blood Mage by investigating it beforehand once you discover why Irving took the blood magic books from the library. That probably would have made for an awkward transition to Ostagar though; since the crux of these origins is you are forced to leave your home for some reason.

It was a very different experience from the human noble origin, where it was established in a few sentences that your entire family loves you, and everyone in the castle is respectful. Not just because you are a noble and their boss, but that they saw you grow up and genuinely seem to like you. It is what made the climax of that origin so emotionally moving and painful. Whereas the mage origin kinda left me scratching my head with all the assumptions they made about my character, despite doing little to instill those feelings in the actual plot. Jowan is alright as a character, but the origin itself was weak.

Apologies for this bit of ramble. I probably should have went with "What  mousestalker wrote +1."

I really enjoyed the mage origin. My very very first playthrough was as a mage, and I was all sympathetic and totally felt for Jowan, then he BETRAYED ME!! I was seriously sucker-punched, I couldn't believe it. So I re-rolled a new girl and went right to Irving and was surprised I still had to help the weasle. Needless to say that playthrough I killed Jowan in the cell.... oh, the Alistair back-lash....

Yet we have to catch him in the act and I have to kill some sentries doing their job? Now that's what I didn't like.

As noted, they were magically animated pieces of armor, not living people.  Still the wholesale destruction of the Circle's downstairs defenses, but not quite as bad, I think. :)

AH, glad to hear they were not real Templars. :P

The confusing thing about those constructs is how they bleed. Lily got their blood all over her too. My first time through the origin I wondered why Gregoir was angrier about the shattered phylactery than my mass murder of his templars. :pinched:

I liked the origin, too. It was my very first character (which I think helps a lot), and I was rp'ing that she was a good person at heart, but arrogant about her power and a little insufferable because of that. Really, Jowan was the only one who would hang around her (because he's a wannabe). So she felt obligated to help him, since he's really her only friend, lol! Even the incidental comments and encounters seemed to play into this--the "get out of my light" elf was just acting that way because he was a jealous ****. According to her, anyway!

The worst thing about the mage origin is that it is the ONLY mage origin. I would so love to have the choice between circle mage origin and apostate origin, or at least the possibility to actually run away with Iowan if you help him. It sucks always to be the one who gets his ass saved by Duncan. Why not escape and volunteer to join the Grey wardens in order to show that blood magic and apostates aren´t as bad as everyone says?

I found the mage origin difficult. yeah, Jowan was a total douche bag (I totally loved bad mouthing his girlfriend and insuolting him) but on principle, I had to help him, because I hate the Circle and Chantry even more. My character justified it not so much as helping out Jowan, but giving the finger to the Chantry and circle, as well as getting rid of an annoying tag along whose only claim to friendship is pestering the life out of me when I wake up in the morning.

I like when Jowan flips out when you're character says "I sorta might have told Irving about your plan..."

I giggled like a little girl.

Me too! Well, I am a little girl, er I mean short girl, so it is appropriate - but I couldn't resist clicking on that option.

It's better to offer Lily "your condolenses" for being with Jowan. He thinks you're joking, but c'mon...

I personally liked Jowan more then I'd expect. I mean, he's the typical guy that makes the wrong thing... always. I would have been interesting to see him in a party. A fourth mage would really be welcome. And besides, if you'd have him, you might even get a sidequest to rescue the fat cow...errr... I mean... Lily... Maybe a DLC in the future... who am I to say (or maybe not!)

And maybe a romance option to take Lily away from him! That would be REALLY awesome:devil::devil::devil::devil:
Even more as she is one of the better-looking NPCs in DAO. Iowan got taste, at least.

Yea and then executing him after getting him to do the ritual to kill Isolde :devil: That gave me the most satisfaction! 2 birds with one stone... kinda

Lily's hair has an ugly fringe. Yuck, who's her stylist? Seriously.
