I am really at wits end here, I posted on the Steam forums for the steam version and a friend is working with me with an old disc version and this is really grating as we have not found a single working solution between two computers and two different material versions (Steam and Disc).
Copy-pasting what I had posted on steamforums with no solution:
I am having a pretty huge problem with KotOR 1 on my Win7 computer here.
It will always crash without exception right after you rescue Bastilla
on Taris and try to leave your hideout. It doesn't matter whatever
character I select or don't select it will immediately crash as soon as I
hit "okay" when leaving the hideout. There is no pause or loading it
just goes black and if I'm playing windowed the crash dialog box comes
up in an instant.
I've done a search on the crash message but it's apparently pretty
non-specific and as such I have tried the following with no success or
even noticeable change:
Use Securom-fixed exe.
Used a 'no-[////]' exe.
Used the mss32.dll replacement fix.
Tried running in compatibility mode and/or Administrator.
Set core affinity to 1 core.
Disabled themes and run the game on several graphical settings.
Run the game windowed.
And every combination of the aforementioned 'fixes'.
Here's the thing I got so desperate I put my save file to flash drive
and took it over my friend who own's the disc version but has a Vista
system. He installed and took my save file and it crashed in the exact
same way and then tried the same fiddling around tricks with the exact
same fruitless result.
Is there any fix/ work around I haven't tried? I'll even use a save
editor that just places me outside my freaking hideout if such a thing
exists.
Just for clarification my system is-
Win7 64 bit
8 gigs of DDR3 RAM
GTX 560 Ti
6 Core Intel i7
Friend's computer is
Vista 64 bit
4 gigs of DDR2
GTX 9800
4 Core Intel Quadro
Again both produce the same result.
We also tried to make a handful of different characters and with seperate save files on both his and my own computer and it crashes at the exact same spot.
Constant Crash after Leaving Taris Hideout.

Well okay I'm beaten. I give up. I've played through the game 3 times already from the start all reaching the same unavoidable crash on two systems of two versions and have tried every exhaustible method now. Excuse my rude tone but who at Bioware can I contact about this directly? Do I just have to send in my save files and go "Get me out of freaking hideout! What the hell is wrong with these? Please fix it."
I really used to love this game but I'm sorry I feel incredibly cheated here.

There is no one from Bioware or from LA making any kind of regular oversight of any really old games' forums here. This one is now about nine years old, maybe a little more. I doubt you can find anyone at Lucas Arts to help, but that was the official Tech Support company. They still have gamer forums you can look up on their site. Complain to them.
