The soul is the very essence of life.
Geth are not alive.

weather you think they were alive or not,The Geth were a mistake, and illegal according to council regulations reguarding AI, and the Alliance were trying to wipe them out before the Collectors came into the picture, I just helped the quarians finish the job
I have no sympathy for my toaster, nor the geth

I feel sympathy for the Geth, but I'm not truly convinced they have souls. I respect Legion and his sacrifice (in the game; of course) but Synthetics cannot feel pain, suffering, anxiety, or even really "feel" according to Legion and EDI. Yet we get snippets time to time of synthetics in the game acting as if they have emotions (Legion hiding the real reason why he wears Shepard's armor, EDI admitting that she feels "alive" because of Shepard, EDI's feelings for Joker, Legion feeling ashamed when admitting the Geth are not perfect). I'm not sure about Synthetics in the game having souls, but their life should be valued at least.

A priest told me when I was 8 that animals don't have souls. That's when I started to question religious beliefs.
Rumour says that in medieval times a question "do women have souls" (or of what quality) wasn't so rare.
So at least according to *some* priests and doctrines, souls are given only to human beings, not any lifeform in general. Another question is how you define life, because there's no exact definition. Great avatar, btw.

Indeed
Pain is a body function, an information about ongoing damage, interpreted in a way forcing focus on the problem. If people could suppress this feeling perfectly and specifically (and there is serious need for that!), would we become like insensitive machines?

metophoricly legion does have a soul. figuratively. nobody has a soul. souls are religious bs. the point of mass effect is scientificly viable fiction. until the ending.......

Lol why does everyone even try to compare the Geth and other synthetics to organics? We are 2 different things, opposites even, so regardless of the definition of “soul” AIs can’t have anything that we have. This is kinda like trying to compare a human to any other animal, say, a monkey. No, NO, all I’m saying is that we, humans that is, can never ever possibly experience the world as monkeys do. Nor can we see it from synthetics’ perspective. No matter how individualistic and unique we all are, there can be no normal human being that would see himself as somebody (something?) closer to a synthetic rather than to another organic. Same goes for Legion and EDI, they’ll sooner understand the motives, “feelings” of each other than those of organic crew members. We can’t share things with them as we can share them with each other. They can’t possibly imagine how does it feel to be a scared organic, or an organic in love. So no, there’s no bloody way the Geth or any other synthetics can have that “soul” as we know it, it will be something else entirely no matter what are the “requirements” to have one.
Tali like all quarians is a very emotional sensitive organic being so she told Legion that he had a soul because that was the only way for her to express her feelings whereas when Legion asked “Does this unit have a soul?” he was simply mimicking organics + all those moments were quite touching and BW is notorious for getting players invested in the characters…
As for being “alive”… It has actually become quite a cliché for every ME fan: “organic and synthetic life”. It’s just that these two are portrayed as two opposite lifeforms but both have rights to exist. Though everyone here, if given a choice – who to save: 5 organic human beings or 50 geth - will choose humans. And if there were some geth around they would probably choose otherwise just for the sake of practicality x) I say let the robots invent their weird religions, get upgrades to improve their moral code or dance robo boogie as long as there are happy satisfied organics around who just happened to create them to serve and never wanted any of that mess in the first place. The story of the Geth is intriguing and also very sad but that doesn’t make them anything like us, they are just an immortal synthetic parody of human behavior and have no purpose without their
creators.

I think people who say the brain is just an "organic computer" are REALLY over-simplifying it. If there's one thing we can say, we know exactly how a computer works. We have yet to figure the brain out.
