Zha'til 
The zha'til were a synthetic race that existed at the time of the Protheans. They originated when a race known as the zha implanted themselves with symbiotic AI technology to enhance their intelligence in order to survive as their homeworld became inhospitable. When the Reapers arrived, they subjugated the AIs, known as zha'til, who then seized control of the bodies of their masters and altered their genetic material at the deepest level, transforming the zha into synthetic monsters and their offspring into slaves. The zha'til proceeded to multiply into "mechanical swarms" that "blotted out the sky". With no other recourse, the Protheans sent the star of the zha's home system into supernova, destroying the zha'til entirely.


So Zha was species which achieved synthesis on their own - they did it from need but it worked, with arrival Reaper simply turn them into another freakshow. There is only three explanations:

- Catalyst never looked for solution

- Catalyst never allowed to anyone achieve synthesis without his GOD permision 

- Catalyst never existed

Probably the twelfth too.  This is further evidence of just how poorly written the Catalyst is.

Catalyst can't achieve Synthesis despite having the most advanced technology the galaxy has ever known for nearly a billion years.  An organic race achieves Synthesis in a much shorter amount of time.  Seriously, were the writers even thinking when they made the Catalyst?

Edit: When you think about it, the whole Prothean cycle is a farce.

Reapers: "Here we are to save you from the synthetics!"

Protheans: "Uh, we're winning our war against synthetics."

Zha: "We peacefully co-exist with ours in a form of synthesis."

Reapers: "Nonsense! Synthetics will destroy you all. We're here to save you by preserving you in Reaper form! Well except you, Zha. Because reasons. Not you either, Protheans because you have weird DNA. It's your own fault really. Don't worry, we'll make you into zombie minions instead! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT!"

There are so many plot holes and contradictions in Mass Effect 3 itself without even having to involve Mass Effect 1&2, a true testament to the quality of the story.

Uhh.. The catalyst himself tells you that they have tried synthesis before. But it has always failed.

From the way I read the text, these people implanted tech into their bodies to enhance their intelligence. That's not synthesis yet, that's just a tech implant. Then the reapers show up, attempt synthesis on them, which fails to bring the desired result and turns them into monsters.

As far as I can tell this supports synthesis/catalyst rather than contradicting it.

Master is a poor choice of words given everything we know about the Zha'til. Host would be more appropriate. Nothing says the Zha'til were slaves until the Reapers, you know, enslaved them.

the point is they were seperate entities ... .There was an organic part and a synthetic part.. the reapers took control of the synthetic part who ceased controly of the organic part.

it is implied that the organic part was in control before.

The Zha implanted themselves with AI (like the logical conclusion of Halo's AI tech, I suppose), meaning two sapient species, Zha and Zha'til, organic and synthetic, were coexisting peacefully by actually sharing a physical being. Then the reapers arrive and started to wreck everyone's sh*t.

What the Zha accomplished is exactly what the Catalyst set out to do.

Nope...Zah´til are just Quarians and Geth in one body...they are still TWO seperate beings...

what synthesis does is one being that is synthetic and organic combined.
