They are totally different. Tropico is more like Sim City and CK2 is more like the Total War series.

Edited for better comparison

I really enjoy CK2, even though i still dont know everything about it. I love the possabilities in it. In one playthrough i was a greek, orthodox Duke of Brittany for the first few years i dealt with nobles which where of a different culutre and religion. After that through political marriage, became ruler of Navara in Spain and conquered all most half of spain from the muslims and Kingdom of arogon. Where else can you do something like that?

I didn't mean the game so much as the theme...

Tropico has a rather dry and Machiavellian nature to it.

Its just hard to compare Tropico and CK, they are completely different. It would depend on what you liked about Tropico, if you like the city building and managing then CK has almost none of that. CK is 90% politics, you have to deal with dozens of countries and hundreds of nobles while you try to acquire land by war, arranged marriage or some other political means. Tropico is just 1 city/island and CK is all of europe with some north Africa.

I missed getting Crusader Kings 2 when it was a daily deal on Steam, so I'm holding out hope it goes back on as a Flash deal. I want this just for the Game of Thrones mod :)

I was on time ;).

Trust me, even at 24 euros it's worth every penny. Easily worth more.
There are still some glitches and glaring historical errors, though. Nothing big or really annoying, but I suspect it's going to be way better with mods and patches in another 6 months or a year, so it might be worth holding out for the Christmas Sale.

What it absolutely nails on the head is the nature of medieval western European feudal family politics, the kind that is the direct inspiration of Shakespeare's royal dramas and, indirectly, of Game of Thrones. You don't need the Game of Thrones mod to actually enjoy it, in fact, the stories that evolve in CK2 naturally are in some ways even better.
I am currently playing the House of Gelre, as they are from my corner of the Netherlands, and things are very similar to, and even crazier, than that colourful dynasty's history. But almost every single thing has its parallels in their history.
Apart from them becoming Kings of Scotland and Ireland, of course.

(Something similar could easily have happened in real history, however, as Count Floris V of Holland was actually a claimant to the Scottish throne, a rival of John Balliol and Robert the Bruce. Unfortunately, Edward Longshanks happened, who recognised a highly capable and successful schemer, plotter and state builder if he saw one. King Edward was apparently involved in a later plot with some of Floris' disaffected vassals that led to the Count's murder)

THE MAIN MENU MUSIC IS SO EPIC!

Going to have to dig into the tutorials since I've no experience with any Paradox games before. I see quite a few youtube tutorials for CK2. Are there any that are especially good or worth checking out?

Bump.

After a few hundred hours of playing it, I've determined Crusader Kings 2 is probably my favorite game now. The modding community is pretty good, and has a bunch of overhaul mods like "The Prince and The Thane".

Recently, I've been playing the Game of Thrones mod. It has some really annoying bugs and broken mechanics as it still isn't complete, but overall it's a blast. Me and my Cousin did a multiplayer game recently and made it our goal to steal as many Valyrian steel swords as possible while playing as the Ironborn.

We started our game during the Greyjoy Rebellion as house Drumm and house Blacktyde respectively, and instead of being productive members of the army we decided to go raid strategically useless castles that happened to contain Valyrian steel swords.

Our first target was Lady Forlorn, so we sailed to the other side of the continent and marched our forces into the center of The Vale, besieging the keep of house Corbray (who own Lady Forlorn). Since the armies of Westeros were all attacking the Iron Islands, our forces were completely unopposed. After starving the keep out, I let my cousin take Lady Forlorn as my character already starts with the Valyrian steel sword Red Rain.

After attacking a minor lord in the Stormlands for his sword, we set our sights for something big. We were going to steal Ice, the sword of house Stark. Since pulling a Theon was out of the question, we had to take it the old fashioned way of starving everyone in Winterfell until they surrendered. Unfortunately the Greyjoy Rebellion was crushed before Winterfell surrendered, so we weren't allowed to attack other characters in Westeros anymore. Since our armies and castles were spared from destruction, our two characters ended as the most powerful lords in the Iron Islands.

In addition to our brand new swords and gold we captured, I also captured Lyn Corbray's wife and took her as a slave saltwife. :3

It really is one of the best games I have ever played and it is great to see that Paradox is keeping the game alive with all the DLC's and community mods that are possible. I look forward to the Raja's of India, adding another 300 provinces or so to the map.

The Game of Thrones mod is really nice, especially with the addition of Essos and yours is a really nice idea Chunkyman, I might try that one out myself.

So far I've done 2 playthroughs of the (current) Game of Thrones mod, one as Dany, where I followed the storyline but it is kinda boring since she is really, really overpowered.
The other I played as the Starks in the Clash of Kings starting point. It way more of a challenge since the Lannisters way outnumber you and there is the small matter of the Iron Islanders invading, but I managed to mary Robb of to Arianne Martell, creating a strong alliance with Dorne, winning independence and eventually even gaining Dorne.since my firstborne, luckily, was male.

My next will probably be either Jon Snow or Stannis Baratheon

CK2 is a very good game but it isn't easy even on easiest difficulty.

Those vassals just keep ruining my kingdoms.

It cannot beat Victoria 1 though among Paradox games.

[Off topic]
I somehow find 'Knights of Honor' underrated and overshadowed by Crusader Kings 1 and Medieval Total War 1. It was very fun...
