From what I've seen its usually an insecurity issue. So many women wear makeup its considered taboo not to wear it.

I get crap from my mom all the time for not wearing makeup. I feel like I don't need it. My mom doesn't either but she wont leave the house without it, she thinks she looks terrible when she's a good looking woman for her age...

Yeah I think it's insecurity.

Edit: I do wear lipgloss though.  Because it's tasty.

This I think is the crux of it for a lot of women. Not all of them. But a whole hell of a lot.

Similar to why guys wear certain things in public- to impress others or project a certain image they want people to have of them.

Hence banana hammocks.

I just know a lot about a lot of things. All of which is pretty much useless in the grand scheme of things.

Certain interests like beards and makeup are likely instilled between the people who raise us(Parents, Guardians, Killer Hobos from Space), Societal Influences(Pop Culture, etc.), and friends or others surrounding you.

My personal take on make-up? Preferably as light as possible. Mimi from the old Drew Carey Show is a good example of how not to do make-up. Outside of certain heavy metal bands, I mean. Then, it's somehow inexplicably okay. Hey, don't look at me - I didn't write the rules of metal. That, of course, would be Ormagöden, breather of the unholy flame.
