I expect Maric to already be dead. Him being alive would complicate the universe somewhat.

If he wasn't dead I'm sure he would be clinging to life around the time of his rescue, or he'll end up sacrificing himself for Alistair since Maric's survival would indeed mess things up for Alistair's reign back in Fereldan.

I'm inclined to say "Not really", but without further elaboration on how you think it would complicate the universe somewhat, I can't really say that (yet).

If Maric is alive, then the issue of Alistair's sovereignty comes into question. Technically speaking, Alistair can't be king if Maric is around. There could even be another civil war as the Bannorn rises up after discovering they've been following an illegitimate ruler all this time.

Plus, Maric could definitively answer the question of Alistair's parentage. If Alistair learned that his mother was Fiona, he'd likely want to track her down.

It's a lot "neater" if he's simply dead. Nips a lot of complications in the bud.

Maric is Alistair's father, while Alistair is his only living son. I don't see any rebellion arising if it's discovered that Maric is alive. From the Epilogues, Alistair becomes a popular leader, especially if his personality has been hardened. From Dragon Age II, being a former Grey Warden and being a participant in the defeat of the Blight supports the notion that he's a popular leader.

I could see problems arising if the Cousland Warden became King with Anora becoming his Queen, with Alistair executed. With Alistair alive, I don't see Maric turning out to be alive to be a real issue for Alistair's reign.

Few things:

1) Kings and Queens of Ferelden are decided by the majority of the nobility. So they wouldn't be outraged to discover they've been following an illegitimate ruler, when Maric was nowhere to be found andd presumed dead, Cailan was dead, and the Landsmeet itself supported Alistair as King of Ferelden, based on his bloodline. If they're okay with it when it happens and Alistair is a popular ruler -- and an effective one if hardened with Anora -- then I can't see them rebelling just because Maric is alive.

I can see them rejoicing, but not rebelling.

So I don't see a civil war happening, doubly so if Maric is okay with Alistair as king. In fact, I see this as likely given that of the two Theirin kings, Alistair is the one caught up the most with current events while Maric has been... well... going Carmen Sandiego on Ferelden against his will.

My history is a bit rusty, but I'm fairly certain there were instances where a ruling monarch "retired" -- so to speak -- and left the throne to his/her child, despite still being alive. Remember, Cailan was named King of Ferelden in 9:25 Dragon -- the year Maric disappeared at sea -- and the Bannorn didn't go to civil war, despite the possibility of Maric still being alive (they presumed he was dead and held a funeral, but the possibility still existed).

2) How do you know Alistair isn't searching for Maric so he can abdicate the throne back to his father? Alistair may have gotten a tip on Maric's location and figured that Maric would be better at ruling Ferelden then he would. Of course, this reason only works if Alistair is either a solo ruler or (maybe) married to a Human Noble, because I doubt Anora would give up the throne to Maric or even.... well... rule with him.

3) There's still the possibility that Maric will be alive and die in this series -- or the next. I personally hope that doesn't happen, because that seems way too predictable, but it's there.

Plus, Maric could definitively answer the question of Alistair's parentage. If Alistair learned that his mother was Fiona, he'd likely want to track her down.

Assuming he remembers who he was with. I got the impression that Maric had a lot of affairs, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gave us a "For me, it was Tuesday" type moment.
