I had been avoiding BSN before ME3 and these two things alone pulled me up short:
1) He's late to the party and yet he manages to act like a bro to Shepard right from the start when others worked their butts to build a natural, closer status with her during ME1 and ME2. Yeah, Shepard did something half a year on Earth and got to know James but it still felt forced.
2) I miss a reason for him to be on the board. He isn't special, he is a random marine without an interesting intel/background/anything. Why does Shepard need another soldier at the eleventh hour again? I talked to him between missions but like Roamingmachine said, he didn't exactly demonstrate a faculty to gain an officer rank. Traynor had a purpose (comm spec), Steve had a purpose (driver), Allers had a purpose even if terribly under-used ("PR" for public morale boost).

I don't hate him, I just don't care about him enough. Looking back now, he seemed to be there only blocking well-established characters in.

I agree completely. There was similar disdain, not quite as bad (especially after "but the prize"), for Jacob. I think the characters are absolutely fine. I like seeing aliens but Vega provided a human aspect that was missing in the other characters. I think all parts of the human experience need to be characterized so we can get full interaction with the alien aspects. Without the contrast, both are cheapened. Just my take on it.

Racist.

Like a Batarian would be trustworthy after I killed 500,000 of his kind?

The problem with Vega is that he is completely unnecessary, just like Traynor and Allers..

I'll probably get flamed for it but I think most of the criticism of Vega is homophobic.

I think he's an interesting character. Certainly more sympathetic than some of the others who've been around for multiple games.

300,000; don't exaggerate.

I don't hate him but he's so damn generic, why waste resources in a new character that is not going to add to the plot (like Javik) instead of using those resources to bring an already known teammate, like Jack, Zaeed, Kasumi, etc.

For what it's worth, I appreciated Vega. Okay guy. But that doesn't change the fact that he was added solely so that there was someone to do spin-off material with. A blank-slate character ready for a new story, and human because Bioware is obviously under the impression that people would only care about a protagonist if he's of our species.

I sure laughed when he said he liked Grizzlies and Steve laughed at him and Vega goes:

"WHAT? WHAT?"

So yeah. Hope you get  the joke.

I love Vega. He's the everyday soldier caught in something big. Plus the flirting with FemShep and dialouge with Cortez was pretty funny.

Anytime someone said they hated Vega it was simply due to the fact that he takes away from the more established characters. That in relation to THEM, he's boring.

I don't hate him but I tended to agree with the general idea....until I realized how much I liked the back-and-forth between vega and STEEEEVE.

Been a while since I played it, but I'm failry certain it was 300.

Vega has to be appreciated for his entire body of work, in much the same way that you can't judge ken o gabby individually. Alone they're boring. Together they're fun and make coming down to engineering worthwhile

If he were gay, he'd have gotten Steve's joke. He also would have accused M!Shep of flirting after the "too soft" comment instead of just saying "I'll take your word for it".

I don't quite understand the hate. He just seems so lovable in general.

I thought he started pretty strong, but after you collected the rest of the companions he kind of fell by the wayside. No real hook for his character, it seemed like.

I actually liked the guy. Simple, not in the way and sometimes pretty funny.

This but I think it's because we could have had another, previous, squadmate.

Didn't like him as much as I thought I would from the leak pre-release, but I'm okay with him. Better than Grunt, anyhow, though that isn't hard to beat.

Vega isn't gay.

So many people were assuming this before the leak. He got a fair amount of hate and bad comments just because he might be gay.

Honestly, it's just that he has no purpose in the story. We haven't met him before, he doesn't do anything significant, and he takes up a place on the squad that could have went to a better-established ME2 character, most of which were made into cameos of little significance (Bar Mordin, Legion, and a bit of Miranda).

If we wanted a tough human soldier, we could have had Zaeed. If we wanted a tank, we could have had Grunt. If we wanted humorous banter, we could have had Kasumi. He serves no purpose in the story on on our ship.

If you are going to make a claim like that, you REALLY have to back it up. As a practicing homosexual, I have no sort of homophobic hatred for him.
