I don't like James Vega. I simply don't like his design, his dialogue and his story. Some of the squad banter is good, especially the one with Garrus, and I did enjoy talking to him in London - but he's so... random and boring, he doesn't fit into the universe. It would be logical for him to die almost immediately after the game started, like Jenkins (by the way, Jenkins is a character that you can actually talk to and learn about if you wish to. James just appears and knows Shepard well, and you don't learn anything about him until after the Mars mission).

I agree that it's stupid to judge someone by their muscle mass, but Vega's combined with his haircut just makes me facepalm when looking at him.

Would have preferred Legion to be a squadmate in ME3 until it, let's say, silently leaves the Normandy right before the quarian mission becomes available. That would be very interesting.

I like James Vega, but you are somewhat confused about the reason many people DON'T like him. Although they often will come up with reasons as to why Vega is a bad character, the truth is that people are just mad that he took up a spot that could have been used by whoever their favorite ME2 squadmate that didn't join the squad this time was.

The ME3 Crew is not a bunch of the "best in the Galaxy" recruited using illegal means, the ME3 Crew is a military
team (Shepard, Vega, VS) with some friends helping out (Garrus, Liara, Tali) and a Prothean member discovered by serendipity.

While I would prefer the ME2 Crew every day of the week, it's pretty safe to assume that there are logical reason for the ME3 team to be weaker.

- Commander ****ing Shepard
- Jimmy "I blew up a Collector Ship" Vega
- The Second Ever Human Spectre
- Archangel
- The Shadow Broker
- The Quarian Admiral
- The Last Prothean
- The Most Advanced Synthetic Life Form in The Galaxy

I would call that pretty elite company...

Oh, and about Vegas personality... Just doesn't work as a marine officer. Not even an NCO.Grunt maybe, but not in command of anything. It takes a special kind of person to command a fighting unit and Vega clearly is not one of them.

I thought we established this when he got his squad killed by Collectors?

You know how when you're in the Cerberus Base and you say "Maybe I'm just a VI who thinks it's Commander Shepard"?

James responds "Yeah, yeah... I can see that"

He was just a boring stock marine grunt character. I didn't feel like I finished the game learning anything substantial about his life, that I couldn't have guessed in the beginning. Jacob/Kaidan/Ashley were all far more interesting in my opinion, and they were still boring old normal humans.

I liked Vega, though he was underdeveloped in my opinion. Would have liked to see a companion quest with him, maybe actually do some N7 training.

I actually like the guy, and I'm a misanthropic Cynic.

And let me tell you, if people dislike hum because of him being a "Boring Dumb Grunt," then you should meet ACTUAL run of the mill soldiers/marines.

James is a goddamn Casanova Einstein compared to 80% of those bottom dwellers.

We met plenty of grunts in the game but they were unnamed NPCs not the members of the most elite anti-reaper squad in the galaxy.

Sure, but would you compare it to 12 guys like these:

- Commander ****ing Shepard
- The Most Powerful Human Biotic In The Galaxy
- The Most Skilled Assassin In The Galaxy
- The Most Skilled Thief In The Galaxy
- The Most Experienced Merc In The Galaxy
- The Most Brilliant Salarian Scientist
- The Perfect Krogan Warrior
- An Asari Justicar (some of the most powerful biotics in the galaxy at all)
- The Aforesaid Former Archangel
- The Aforesaid Quarian Future Quarian Admiral
- A Genetically Perfect Human
- A Former Alliance Corsair

Given the fact that Garrus and Tali (not that her skills are that powerful) are in both squads, I think that you just need Jack, Grunt and Samara to completely outpower the ME3 Squad.

I had no problem with James Vega the character. I didn't bring him with me much because the most useful thing about companions to me is their powers not really if they can survive much because I can pretty much solo the on Insanity. The other thing is that like others have mentioned, his introduction is really really annoying. I have no clue who he is supposed to be and it is like they are best buds for forever. At best they met while Shepard was incarcerated which was less than six months under less than ideal circumstances.

I find most of the hate towards vega stems from the fact that he was introduced at the end of the series and we already had a cast of characters who we wanted further development on including 2 Krogans who could have filled his tank position that were very dear to the hearts of many. I always wanted the maternl/paternal potential Shepard could have had with Grunt further explored. Vega stole that opportunity.

That being said I love Vega and my only disappointment is that my femsheps could never get that N7 tattoo with him. That was a MISSED opportunity for sure.

I liked Vega. In that I could tell he was the ME3 version of ME1's Garrus.

Though I do seem in the minority when I say I like having a "normal" crew member. Someone that brings the squad (which is full of characters from every extreme) back down to Earth (no pun intended).

That's why I liked Kaidan in ME1, and it's why I liked Jacob in ME2. Notice these characters also got some hate from BSN.

In games where huge brutes with little intelligence is common place, perhaps the OP would not be so silly.

However when you just place a big hulking guy RIGHT AT THE END of a trilogy, no...his story sucks, perhaps there is a hidden story there, but it was so obvious it did not deserve additions to it, otherwise what little DEPTH this character has would have been lost.

The guy is a joke of a character, I simply ignored him the entire game, useless.

What does me hating Vega say about me?

It says that I hate how overused the "muscle-bound jarhead" archetype is, and that I don't give a damn about some random and completely uninteresting soldier who happened to end up on my ship when there were plenty of more complex characters in the previous game that could have joined me instead.

His physical appearance actually has nothing to do with it. It's the fact that you can hear the wind rushing through the hollow space in his head when he talks. Really, most of his lines are laughable. And not in a good way.

Thanks for the eye opener, OP.

I don't hate Vega.

Just frustrated that he replaced Grunt, Wrex, Thane (Yes I know he's dying), Zaeed or Kal friggen Reegor.

You know, characters I already liked..

Vega is necessary, without him you'd just have EDI, Liara and the VS. They needed another character and James was what they went with.

I quite like him too, i just feel that he needed more conversation options.

I'm one of the few who like Vega. I found him to be an entertaining character, he's not as deep as some of the others, but he doesn't do anything to make me hate him either. Unlike Ashley, god I hate her.

Vega is one of my favorite characters to be honest. In my renegade soldier playthrough I did every mission I could with him and Ashley in my squad.
I find it just feels right that way. Three Alliance soliders fighting for the future.
The same reason I almost always rolled with Kaidan and Ashley in ME1.

People who hate James are pretty much the minority at this point. We were all angry when we first saw him because he looks just like that mean guy at the gym who makes us pasty nerds feel all insecure. Then the game came out and we all came to like him for his simple honestly, his loveable dimness and his humorous interactions with Cortez, Garrus, Tali, Javik and the like.

I think a big part of that is the voice acting. There's a video floating around somewhere which is an interview with Freddie Prinze Jr about voicing James. The guy is clearly a huge fan and just sounds so into it, it makes him endearing. It's the same reason everybody liked David Tennant as Doctor Who - he was a well-known fan of the show and his enjoyment of the role came across in his performance and made him very likeable.
