Ugh Vega.
Traynor is the right person to be the avatar of new players. The reason is she is new to military service, too!
Vega is just there like you're supposed to know him from the beginning. Traynor has a proper introduction. She even shows you (because you're new to ME3) the different sections of the ship.
Traynor has a proper role, too. A job to do. She participates, intercepts communications, offers insights, and has her moment to shine when she traces Kai Leng. Throughout the game she becomes accostumed to life onboard: like you, dear player. She says after a couple of missions that it's one thing to hear about Shepard, something else to see her in action; although this is mainly an "oooh you're romanceable!" line, it also works as the thoughts of new players who finally get to play as Shepard.
All this as opposed to Vega, who after nearly killing you on Mars spends the whole game doing chin-ups and then goes "y'know what, I'ma sign up for N7 lol". Sure whatever dude.
I think you got a point: Traynor as the avatar for new players fits surprisingly well. Without dragging this thread in a dangerous field, I'd like to say that maybe the fact that Traynor was already designed as an exploitation character made BioWare think about someone else to be the avatar of newcomers.
That being said, I absolutely love Traynor even if I play mostly with MaleSheps so I can't romance her. She's a very interesting and fresh character, I'll give her an armor and let her come with me as a squadmate if I could.
Vega's point, while may fail to appease new players, is to show a very down-to-earth member of the Normandy. I like his simple way. Maybe because I always liked the stereotype of slightly dumb hulks with a heart of gold.
EDIT: PS: your avatar is friggin awesome.
