A lot of us have been cheering and chatting, whining and wondering about the romances in DA:O.  We've even been exchanging in-game dating tips, for heaven's sake.  And we've probably been making a bit of a nuisance of ourselves if the truth be told.

So, I was wondering what you thought of this:-

http://uk.pc.ign.com.../1055896p1.html

Is this our fault?  What have we done!!?  (*gasps* Is it such a bad thing?)

I feel a bit horrible.

[and to the GMan and Big T, even though they probably won't see this - I told you so and you both owe me a pint]

So.. tying this into Dragon Age?

Edit: I know! David needs to write the storyline for a casual romance game spin-off DA. It would be like Dragon Age: Journeys without the fighting.

No direct tie-in, but perhaps the clamouring for more in DO:A indicates a desire for more romance in games in general? Thin end of the wedge?  My point is that someone may have been listening in! Eek! :)

(it amused me is all)

As a male I agree there should be more romance out there (and I mean romance - not sex)...

My fave mod for the original NWN was the Aribeth's Revival series of mods, very well written and meaningful with little to no fighting in them, but full of slushiness and romance (if your PC was male of course) :)

A role-playing game is basically a virtual reality, wherein you want something interesting to do in addition to wandering around and looking at all the pretty 3D stuff.

Combat is one interesting thing to do. Solving puzzles is another interesting thing. Fiddling with items (finding, buying/selling, displaying in your house, crafting, repairing) is another. Learning lore about the game world (for example, by reading in-game books) is another.

Then we have sex and relationships. If it can be done well, it can be another interesting thing to do while wandering around the 3D world. Badly-written romances are probably not a feature. Bad sex, well even that can be good.

We had the male perspective of relationships in The Witcher (hi, I bought you some flowers, let's do it - hey, I got a collectible sex card!). I say let the ladies have their over-the-top romances as well! It's all good. OK, the casual sex is better, but I'm a guy.

Speaking of which, I thought this was supposed to be a fantasy game. Where are the identical twin lesbians?

It's a visual novel. They have a ton of them in Japan, an a select few do get localizations.

That being said, I love the romances, but having a visual novel or just a game entirely centered around the romances....? Eh as much as I've gone on about happy endings with Alistair I think it would just take away from the dynamics of the series. I feel those reasources could be better used somewhere else.

I like the way that it was presented in DAO, and because it wasn't strictly a romance game, it didn't come off as cheesy.

Smart move. The Romance novel market is huge and if they get even a small slice it will probably be a big success. Plus, it would be refreshing to have an RPG based on something other than violence.

In Japan, maybe. The reason that you dont see very many non 18+ visual novels anywhere else is because they do terrible abroad. Especially stateside. I can think of ONE visual novel that caters to female and that company went under years ago due to all the boot legging. Its rough, there's no way a visual novel would survive on a console (anyone remember Sprung for the DS? exactly), so the best bet is PC where most people just steal the game instead of paying for it legit.

The only successful ones I've seen are the hentai ones, who occasionnaly have "softer" visual novels, but the main chunk of their products are 18+.

Well, Japanese have been doing dating games ( from cute and sweet to downright wrong and foul ) for a long long time now. While they tend to stay in Japan, there's a huge amount of people who use online communities and whatnot to swap and download that type of games despite not being able to understand them ( or they use extremely clumsy methods of translation ).

Not really a new thing at all ;) However, to have someone in western regions doing something like that is new. Regrettably, I'm 100% sure they won't be able to make anything good because they don't know how to go about it.

My reasoning:

They will try to market the games to women that actually like reading those horrible horrible sappy romance novels they sell at discount prices next to the cigarette stands in grocery stores. However, the women that actually read those... things... most likely aren't the type that are interested in computer games in the slightest. How would they even know about the game? When I think about people who actually read those crazy books, I think of 40+ year old virgins in overfurnished houses with illegal amounts of crocheted things covering absolutely every surface. The stentch of kittylitter, cigarettes, cheap perfume and even cheaper booze lingering everywhere. They don't even have a computer - or if they do, they most certainly don't know how to use it beyond checking their favourite online personals. No, I can't imagine these people buying those games.

They also won't be able to market the game to women that actually like to play computer games. I suspect these... PassionFruit Games people don't have much knowledge in creating games, thus they'll end up making a game that will feel annoying and clumsy to experienced players. Not to mention that they will be relying entirely too much on stereotypes, which will only irritate the 'modern' women. Modern and YOUNG women. I dare venture guess that most girls that do actually buy games, casually or more 'seriously', are under the age of 30. Older gamers then that will be more casual as it's more likely they'll have things like work and family to take care of. Anyway, gameindustry is still heavily influenced by men, obviously and they are actually dumb enough to STILL assume that even the younger generation of girls still swoons over the overbuffed, potentially steroid abusing Conan the Barbarians. For the last damn time, GAME INDUSTRY DUDES: IT'S YOUR OWN DAMN FANTASY, NOT THAT OF THE WOMEN. It's you MEN who like the overmuscular, sweaty and slippery hulks. Tom of Finland anyone? Also, has anyone noticed the popularity of the 'gay looking' characters? You know, the feminine men, skinny and fairfaced with long and beautiful hair? Guess what: they haven't become popular because it's cool to be gay. They've become popular because there are much much more women around the internets these days. I know this may come as a surprise to a lot of you guys but girls actually like the welldressed, wellmannered 'sissies' that take care of their looks, those the insecure, masculine, testosterone pumped morons consider gay.

Of course there are exceptions and there is plenty of femininity among gay folk, but it is not the rule of thumb. Nor is it rule of thumb that women only like feminine men. Each have their own tastes but as far as I've seen, game developers have no idea what kind of characters they should market and to whom when romance is involved. Even DAO fails at this a little. Zevran is nice, but I'm betting women find him far more attractive for romance, then homosexual men. The gay men would rather have Alistair.

*Cough* Anyway, my original point is that the game will most likely fail badly. Personally I'm already turned off by the artwork alone ( how horrid, for shame ). The picture of the girl being cradled by the muscular hulk makes me only think about the stentch of testosterone mixed sweat and imagine how the guy will most likely speak in little more then grunts since his brain capacity won't allow him the high requirements of normal speech: "Hurr me liek u, ur purdy. Me taek u to mai hut nao an maek sex to u nao hurr". Of course I also suspect that the heroine will posess about the same level of intellect; why else would she find that attractive? No, I am not turned on, no. Give me someone beautiful and suave, with the intellect of Sherlock Holmes, and the voice and charisma of Vincent Price: "I hope you forgive me for being this bold, but I must say I find your skin most delightful to look at. It looks as smooth and white as milk, yet soft as silk. I must say, when I look at you I am reminded of Venus de Milo. You posess the same mystique, and while both your arms are thankfully intact, I am intriqued by what secrets you cradle within you. I hope you would allow me to explore the beautiful temple that is your body in length tonight. However, if my desires are inappropriate, I apologize and hope you do not think badly of me, for what am I but a man enthralled by your divine grace." Well ok, maybe an overkill but you get the idea. ( Oh, FYI... such cheesy lines do actually work, if you posess the charisma to back them up. Don't doubt me. ).

There's plenty of that type of games too. The fact that you actually ask for them implies that you haven't played them, which implies you wouldn't be old enough to play them anyway. Troll more.

I think it's smart to take advantage of an obvious market (the romance genre) but I'm praying they leave Fabio in his nursing home. Female computer users are (I hope) slightly more intelligent than the romance novel toting beach cows who buy that ankle-level cheesedrizzle. Ugh. Hey Designers! Bump it up a few IQ points!!! Kthxbye.

32 yr old female gamer here.

I read many romance novels, admittedly I read the good ones with heroines that are totally unrealistic... like my dragon age character. The heroines go toe to toe with villains, often save the hero and at times are saved by him... like dragon age. The characters get backstory that wrings the heartstrings and the story while centered more on the romance than dragon age usually has 1-3 scenes in the whole book that are the romantic ones, the rest of the book is about the adventures, the solving of the quest. To any that like a good story I recommend 2 by Johanna Lindsay The Princess and Warriors Woman. Totally awesome Scifi fantasy romance adventures.

You can't pigeon hole people or stereotype them either, not with any accuracy anyway, people are dynamic and have multiple interests. While I can say that the quality of romance novels has greatly dwindled in the past 10 years one thing that draws me in to any good novel is the same thing that draws me in to a good game; an engaging story with interesting characters and a chance to escape the real world. Monday through Friday I am a kindergarten teacher, and I love my job, but after 5:30 and on weekends I am a city elf named Natalya, a Human Mage named Honor, A dwarf princess named Marzipan, or the dwarf commoner named Cupcake. With my friends and fellow Grey Wardens I must save Ferelden from the Darkspawn.

As a gay man, I can attest to the desirability of Alistair, but there are lots of men who like feminine men. The kind of body that nobody I know finds attractive is a huge, oily Conan body.

Since I haven't seen what the actual game will be like I can't really comment on it, but guess if it's actually a decent story/game then I see nothing wrong with it.

I mean one of my all time favorite games is The Longest Journey and that's all story no game play, even for a point and click game. But guess time will tell if this is actually going to be more than just a company making another set of games no one ever heard of and no one ever played.

i'll take Zevran is way better than Alistair. Alistair bothers me to no end, especially since i played through as an elven female and did the romance with him, just... ugh. the rose thing... *eyeroll*

Zevran is much deeper and far more interesting. Alistair is just a tool.

Is this the gay version of the straight guys lie, "No, I like small breasts"?
